  • In the north of the Kenyan coast in the Kiwayu island, the Bajun people have practiced an extraordinary technique for centuries: remora fishing.
The remora, a fish whose head contains a small suction cup, attaches itself to turtles, rays and sharks for nourishment. Legend has it that the remora sucks its victims’ blood to tire them out, hence the nickname, “vampire fish”. Alphan and Aruni are Bajun fishermen. During the first days of Ramadan, they get ready to sail out to sea in their traditional boats. The only way they can survive is to fish along the coast, using the vampire fish, will they succeed?
Documentary: “Master of the spirits - The vampire fish”
    Direction: Jean Queyrat
Production: ZED & La Cinquième for RAI 3 & Voyage

When you say we take things for granted, it seem to suggest these people aspire to have your superficial superior comforts that only money can buy. Not at all. Paper money is a man made construct that has made slaves and or villains out of men.

How nostalgic it is to look at these beautiful pictures.!!! In the late 1986 I had the privilege to visit the Bajuni islands on the Somali side and spend an unforgettable day with Jibril the 'nakooda' of Koyama together with the wonderful Bajun people who will remain forever in the deepest of my heart. They were able to use an Interesting technics to catch sea crayfish. Some iron wire shaped like a couple of tennis rackets with a hose of net stitched along the round end of both the rackets. This tool was presented in front of the sea crayfish to entangle him when frightened with a spear inserted in the lair was trying to escape.

It seems strange to me, I knew that pirates had bases in Puntland in the north, given the frequency of trade routes not too far from the coast, not under the Equator and in Kenya. Unfortunately Somalia is doomed by its very important strategic location in the Horn of Africa and that wonderful land will never find peace.

That is an incredible video. Thank you very much. I have seen the rows of fishing cormorants on the stern of the thai boats waiting their turn to catch their fish and bring it back to tbe boat, sometimes two birds fetching a heavy fish. The Ramoro is very different. To hold a large Ray or shark is quite a feat. I wonder do they know exactly what they are doing. In our part of the world we have a similar fish called a Lamprey but their eel shaped bodies are not toned and powerful like tbe ramoro
Our Lamprey are also an endangered species with certain rivers dedicated to their survival...
