  • Ulcerative Colitis Signs and Symptoms (& Why They Occur), and Complications
Ulcerative Colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that involves inflammation in the large intestine (colon). Due to it being a chronic inflammatory state, Ulcerative Colitis can lead to not only many gastrointestinal signs and symptoms, but also to many extra-intestinal manifestations (including skin conditions and manifestations). In this lesson, we discuss all of these gastrointestinal features, along with complications and extra-intestinal manifestations.

I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis when I was 15 years old (first year of high school). I am now 22 years old so been dealing with it 7 years now. If anyone here is struggling with this or just been diagnosed, trust me I feel your pain. It may feel like your life is over and that all the walls are closing in on you. That is how I felt every single day at the start. I wasn’t able to attend regular school anymore. I spent every day feeling sorry for myself thinking there was no hope for me anymore. But today I am working full time an hour from home. I no longer let my disease control me. I no longer am ashamed of having to go to the bathroom so much. No matter what you do or what your DRs say, you can get better and you can beat this! They told me no other option but surgery. Here I am today doing all my normal life activities.

I was diagnosed a few years ago and the doctor has me on medication that keeps it at bay. I did basically a paleo diet and stopped taking the medication to see what happened and it flared up again. What kind of diet are you on that helps keep it in control? I am very interested in finding a natural way to beat this. Also I found out when I stopped taking the medication I felt more relaxed and realized that it gave me road rage. Now they have me on a different formula of the medication that doesn't make me want to kill everyone who goes even a half a mile under the speed limit.

For all us who have UC and is listening to this video, I offer my thoughts and prayers to everyone dealing with this IBD. I know it gets frustrating dealing with the stomach issues, the uncontrollable bowel movements many times a day. Like others said, stay positive, keep your head up. I am a huge worrier and once a negative thought is in my head, it's hard not to turn it to a positive. Ive had the disease since the beginning of 2013, been on Humira since October 2013 and it put into remission for 9 years. Fast forward to now and I think it's come back. After 3 weeks, small traces of blood in 2 of my stools and constant stomach discomfort, way different from the symptoms i have when I first got it. Finally have my Dr appointment today to see what the plan is. God bless you all!

On the fourth day I had really bad pain it hurt to walk so I came to the hospital and I’m still here. I am on Norco’s but there’s days I still feel pain even while on the drugs my appetite is very little and I’m only able to poop diarrhea. as soon as I eat sometimes I feel pain like really bad pain or I don’t feel pain when I eat but once I go use the restroom, the pain hit me again. It’s a hit or miss with the pain but it’s terrible every time. Sometimes the Norco won’t even make an affect until an hour and a half or more later rolling around in pain and there’s nothing they can do.

I have been in remission for this disease for years in the past. You need a good doctor. If youre in nyc hit me up. Ive had this illness for 10 years now and im 28 rn. Mesalimine/Lialda was helpful for me along w only eating soluble fiber foods. NO INSOLUBLE FIBER. Every single person has different trigger foods so you will have to get to know your body. Please keep hope! Not gonna lie it is hard bc you will have to adjust but just remember that during stressful periods of your life it will get worse and it will be less worse during less periods of your life. I can imagine the stress you are going through now triggered your UC gene on. I am no doctor but Ive been attending a UC/chrons group therapy for 2 years with the same ppl. I also had individual UC mind therapy for more than a year. The causes are unknown but my doctor has had a lot of individuals have it triggered on my a stressful event, which some ppl in my therapy group could clearly make a connection to.

I suffer with this but my first flare up was in November and it was major causing my intestines to swell and block completely. It's the only big issue I've had so far but uts still very early days. It put me in hospital for a week and I was very ill. I get alot of these symptoms on and off mostly pain in stomach that last seconds to a few minutes or on and 9ff fir a day or more. I'm always tired, feeling sick or bring suck and gassy and heartburn alot but it's mild and dull except the first time. Sometimes it hurts slightly before I go to the toilet other days it's mostly quiet. I'm always terrified of my next flare up because the pain it comes with when it's a Big one is worst than torture. The reason I'm watching this is because because Gerd like symptoms I got before it hit me are giving me a bit of stick recently and this time I'm bot passing it off as Gerd I'm keeping an eye on it. When I was 21 had an MRI due to nystagmus, bizzare on and off migraine like symptoms and sudden and severe anxiety and general feeling odd so I also need to be on the look out as I know colitis can be a warning sign or symptom of MS in some cases.

Hi Anna, i am a nurse who suffers with UC. Advil and aleve are contraindicated for people with UC because they can actually bring on an acute episode or exacerbate one. You should steer clear of all NSAID’s whether non-prescription or RX if you have been diagnosed with an IBD. One medication that falls outside this warning are the salicylate types such as mesalamine and sufasalazine. They contain salicylates which are an NSAID but this actually helps to control swelling and inflammation associated with UC unlike the other NSAID’s which exacerbate or cause acute UC episodes.

my dad has UC, he had to take medication, medication is needed to stop the inflammation. but he also did a diet made for people with UC and crohns called the specific carbohydrate diet and that helped put him into remission so that he didn’t need the medications anymore. it might be worth looking into that diet, it’s quite strict but there are websites that help you check ingredients. sorry if you’ve already tried it and this comment isn’t helpful, but just wanted to suggest it in case it could help you. also there are a lot of bots in the comments here, please be careful if someone starts trying to sell you random supplements promising a cure. I hope you can start to feel better soon!

I throw away all my stress and negativity from life after i was diagnosed, and now in my 4th year with UC i am living regular live, i do what i did before. Just dont be fooled when you feel better and dont stop use meds immediately , to this day i am using some of the meds. But i feel great and now its 3 years i have 0 sympthoms. Just be patient, less stress more smiles, chill the fk out when world going to spin too fast, chose good healthy diet, and after some time you will see big progress.
