You can grab yourself a bargain today in the form of old Canon full frame cameras, namely the 5D mark iii and the original 6D. These two oldies are being retired by many professionals to eBay, allowing many more people access to kit that only the upper echelons of the photography had access to back in the day. But they came out in 2012, so would you consider getting one now in 2019?

I would like a 6D for a complementary camera for my 5Ds. When I can’t change lenses, when 51MPx is too much and when high iso is needed.
There’s not a lot of difference with the 5D Mark III.

Nice review, but it sounds like you are saying that a 6D can't be used professionally and is only good for amateurs. I have to respectfully disagree. I started shooting weddings with manual focus/manual wind film cameras, then my first digital was an Olympus E20N (4 shot buffer, raw shooting was not possible, no HSS, and it was $2,000!). When I stopped shooting weddings, I was using a Canon 20D and 10D. There is a youtuber around somewhere that claims he has about 1 million shutter clicks each on a pair of 6D's. I just photographed a wedding with the 6D for the first time and it is VERY much a professional unit, and this thing can practically see in the dark! I don't do video, so I can't speak for that aspect of the camera, but if you do weddings, portraits, sports, landscape, or anything that doesn't require video, the 6D, to me, is an amazing machine. You are right, though, BOTH units are an INCREDIBLE value! I got my 6D with 175 shutter clicks for $750!! What a steal!! Not trying to "crash the party", but just saying that the professional part is in the photographer, not the camera.

the 6D CAN be used professionally, Idid it for years. However, its subpar AF system and the fact it only has a 1/4000s shutter like a cheap Rebel tells you all you need to know, its not a professional grade camera. Its a prosumer camera. A Rebel can be used professionally as well.

Autofocus: The central focus point in the 6D focuses almost in total darkness what is very useful for example for weddings photographers in many low light situations. Magic Lantern can be installed also in the 6D. The 6D has a better sensor in terms of dynamic range and in my opinion, also in terms of image quality. Greetings.

I think it is funny how just over 10 years ago people were using the 5D2 for professional events and now people assume that same level of quality would not be ok for an event. I client would not be able to tell the difference between a 5D2 vs a 5D4 images if you get your shots right.

I still own and use both the 6D, the 5DMii and 5DMiii, But I also have the MarkIV, and while I agree that most clients can't tell the difference in picture quality, as a photographer I notice a massive difference in usability, newer functions (i.e. dpaf and touch screen) as well the a much quieter shutter for weddings and events (the 5DMarkii sounds like a machine gun going off). Those changes make upgrading to the newer models more appealing to me as a professional in the field.

The 6D is an okay camera on mine only the center focus point is reliable. I have seen many 6D’s that have the same problem. The 5D3 is going to absolutely brutally pummel the 6D in the focusing arena. The low light advantage given to the 6D is not real. In fact I prefer the 5D2 iq over the 6D. The 6D can work for you it just not my favorite camera.

  • @TheGreatLoco
    @TheGreatLoco Před 4 lety +4

I went for a 6D, a used 5D Mark III was too near of what I paid for my new 5Ds.
The 6D gets me a second body to change lenses much less often, higher iso, wifi remote control - though the 5Ds has an SD card accessory for that, but I will also need an expensive CF card then, and slightly more sensitive center AF point. $350 for a practically new 6D.
It’s amazing how inexpensive one can get access to DSLR technology this days. Not only cameras, but pro lenses as well.

Interesting perspective Anthony. I think nowadays as the tech is improving we see the cracks in the older models more and more. As a filmmaker myself I used the 6D all the time for corporate and passion projects alike. Nowadays I wouldn't use it, but that's purely because of the newer cameras that I use and am used to. Things like DPAF, more focus points, faster processors and touch screens, are a big pull away from the older models to the new. Saying that though if i was just starting out or upgrading from an older APS-C model I would LOVE this camera. (: 📸

Thought I just stunk at taking pics until I finally went for a 5d mark IV this past January and since then......heaven. Worth every penny of the 1,800 I paid for it. They're even cheaper now. Don't get me wrong, I had a ton of great 6d shots and I have a bad feeling there was just something wrong with mine although it could be I'm just an idiot. Old but the choice is relatively simple, video and casual photography 6D, action photography and weather sealing - 5D3. Low price full frame general photography - get a 5D or 5D2. Just bought a mint late production 5D for as little as EUR 135,- I still have my 5D3 - bought new in 2015. More camera than I ever need, that’s why I did not replace it for the 5D4. Use a 70D + STM zooms for video. I also play around with Nikon with an oldie D700 and D800. Don’t make a living with photography, just a hobbyist. Right now thinking about the next gen of mirrorless - which must be capable of using Canon glass. R and RP not there yet, unless at an even lower price, R6 and R5 getting close, but at far too high a price, especially the latter. Waiting another gen. Might pick up a Sony A7iii as a stop gap once the price drops more. I like the R6, but 20mpx just below what I look for in a modern general purpose body, 24-26mpx is goldilocks for me.

Thanks for the video. I base my decision mainly on image quality, so I miss the sample pictures in this video. Speaking of image quality, I own two 5D Mark I bodies since 2006 and I worked with them for years. Now It´s time to upgrade my sistem and I will buy a 6D instead of a 5 Mk III, because I consider that it has a better sensor, more similar in image quality to the mavelous sensor of the 5D Mk I, with some features that I need like speed, extended dynamic range, wifi file transfer and a better screen, keeping that film-like output of the 5D Mk I. I´m a photographer from the film era, so I´m glad with the single center cross-type focus point. As you can see, I don´t carevery much about features, because I´ve been working with a camera built in 2005 uo to 2022!!! Image quelity is the main feature that I tend to consider. Greetings.

Solid video. Great comparison, would love to see some sample photos and footage. I recently upgraded our 6D to the 5D mk4. Much better all around. However, the 6D is solid. Just make sure if you buy used, you get it looked at. We got our 6D used and the flange was warped which caused images to be out of focus. Costs $250 US to get the issue fixed by canon. Decided to upgrade instead. My strong recommendation is to look at the m50 or the SL3 vs a used 6D mk1. Around the same price, you lose the full frame but the other features make up for it. Better quality image, auto focus, flip out screen and touch. Sharper image as well vs the 6D.

I do mainly video production and used to use my 6D for wedding videos. When it comes to photography the 6D is still amazing, but I've found the 5DMarkIII and IV better for video. (:

I have a 6d and my sd card reader is not working anymore and it's quite expensive to replace it. So i was wondering if it's better to buy a new 6d or buy 5d mark III. I was happy with the 6d but if buying the 5d mark III is an upgrade i'm considering it..

The 600d is a crop frame - which means it has a smaller sensor and doesn’t work as well in Low light or with high ISO values. The 6D is full frame - larger sensor better low light performance. 🙏👍🤩

As a film shooter with NO autofocus at all. Hearing people bitch about slow auto focus makes me crack TF up. For fashion, portrait, headshot and event photography, the 5d mark ii/iii are still extremely viable cameras.
The latitude is JUST fine as well. If you're overblowing highlights THAT much, you probably shouldn't be messing with professional level cameras to begin with. The mark ii and iii handle overblown highlights very well.
Even 6,000 usd digital cameras today still barely touch the latitude of 35mm film, let alone medium format film.
Moral of this story? LEARN TO PROPERLY EXPOSE YOUR IMAGES QUICKLY AND EFFICIENTLY.
I stopped listening to gear heads and people with GAS. They're dumber than a bag of bricks and argue to hell to justify why they spend so much money on gear, whilst being mediocre photographers.

For photography these cams are great options, but for video the internal h.264 is very soft and mushy and totally not up to par with the Sony A7S, that also shoots 1080@60fps and 720@120fps, all for the same price as the 5d3 or 6d. And yes you can record RAW with the 5d3 but that will require fast expensive memory cards and gives you huges files. while the A7s shoots the same sharpness straight out of the box ;) And if you want fullframe for cheap you can also consider getting an Canon M50+speedbooster or Sony A6300+speedbooster, in the same price range and then you have usable auto-focus in your video's. 5d raw vs internal comparison to see the shitty stock 5d3 footage: czcams.com/video/B5P13iyAJvg/video.html
