Can charging an EV cut your home energy costs?

- Intelligent Octopus Go is a great way to charge your EV as cheaply as possible but when you combine it with home battery storage, solar panels and an Air Source Heat Pump the cost savigns really stack up.
My unit cost over the period December to March 2024 has been under 9p per kWh. That covers all the energy used in my home as well as the car. Without the Enyaq I would have been paying 28p for every unit of electricity. As we get in to the Summer the power will mainly come from solar and so my bill will drop substantially.

We are on the IO tariff and the billing says 7.14p per KWH ! Also they say that whenever I "smart charge" the car I will only pay 7.14p per KWH. So I charged the Enyaq one afternoon and had the oven and washing machine on, in the house not the car, I used the power washer and the electric chainsaw etc etc, and when I printed off the bill it was all charged at 7.14p KWH while the car was plugged in.
I have just checked the energy usage statements, one night I had the charge on set to be ready for 11.30am. The statement says from 23.30 until 11.30 the rate was 7.14p. May 1st between 1400 and 1730 the rate was 7.14p.
I cannot do it, my solar panels are not connected to batteries., but My thoughts were with solar panels and storage, charge the batteries and car through the night ( oh you do have different tariffs if you sell power back to the grid) then if the solar has not charged the home batteries, you can use the power from the car to power your home. My friend used their EV to power and charge their moored up narrowboat, obviously need to be parked next to the boat. That could be handy for the self employed with an EV van, use the EV to power your tools then charge the van back up on a night. We are going camping for a few nights, we can charge the car for FREE from charge point in the car park. and we have a kettle that runs from the car, we can run a small extension to the tent for a light
Thanks for another informative video. Like you I’m on IO, but no solar or batteries yet. Charge 2 EVs, with my Enyaq as the ‘dumb’ car and Tesla as the ‘intelligent ‘ car, as my EV charger is not compatible with IO. I would advise anyone planning on using IO to get an IO compatible charger as Skoda is not alone in no longer allowing any more cars to be connected directly to IO. Even Tesla has recently changed its connection protocols.
Great video. Could i ask who your ASHP installer was please? Looking at that option myself but seems a bit of a minefield in finding a good installer.

Hi. Great videos. I pick up my Skoda Enyaq in August. Would you tell me please how your phone is connected to the dashboard? What I mean is, your phone looks pretty stable even when I've seen you using the touch display. I hope I'm being clear? Take care friend
you will ove the car. I have a phone holder by Miracase bought from Amazon, it attaches to a surface like the window or the back of the Enyaq screen

Have you any idea on the viability of chip tuning for EV's? A company called Race Chip claim their chip tune will achieve an additional 20miles range and £17 savings through energy recovery in an Enyaq. You could ask them to send you a unit to test out for a video. It's priced at £269
What chip would you tune? Never heard of that and I'd be pretty sceptical

The RaceChip RX is attached between the accelerator pedal sensor and the engine control unit. Simple plug & play installation means that it can be fitted without any prior technical knowledge. The signals emitted by the accelerator pedal sensor are adjusted via specially tuned characteristic curves. This results in a more linear torque demand on the electric motor and increased energy recovery when the accelerator pedal is released. As a result, less energy is lost and energy recovery is improved during braking; the same battery capacity will cover a longer distance.

from their website its an ECU chip with a sensor connected to the accelerator pedal. It sounds suspect but their ICE tune products are well publicised. Though, I dont know how much much of what is posted online is paid-for influencer promotions or real reviews these days.
