    If anyone is inclined...I've tried these a few times, tried to play with loose or tight grip and my hands were sunk within an hour. I notice his grip is pretty close to the end but all in the wrist? Anyway, anyone else have difficulty with these causing blisters? Any explanations? Other thing was the butt end caught on my pants a few times that that is always a playing ender too (I likely play closer to the kit than he does...doesn't need too b/c of the stick length?)...any input is welcome? I love the tips and size is fine (big hands too); like the balance etc. but not really interested in peeling off the grips all the time. Thanks!

    • @Monsterdrumma
      @Monsterdrumma Před 8 lety

      Yep on the blisters! I played a pair of Zildjian dipped sticks and at first it was like he said easier to grip but then yes it blistered my finger. If the dip was around only two inches from the end just to fill my palm that would be great but once it hits my fingers it works to well and yes creates and rips my skin/blisters off.

    • @moonodude17
      @moonodude17 Před 8 lety

      +Larry Tate The Rock model is a 2B in grip (both .630 diameter), but the Rock is 3/8 of an inch longer, if I'm not mistaken (16 1/4" for the 2B, 16 5/8" for the Rock). The Gavin Harrison model is even longer than the Rock (16 7/8"). I go back and forth between the Rock and 2B. Currently I'm feeling the Rock, but the 2B and SD1's are staples for me because of my tennis racket hands, and they're not too top-heavy (the SD1 is like playing with grippable air). The Rock is about as long as I'll go until I become strong enough to give the Harrisons a try.

    • @fuzzylogiceire
      @fuzzylogiceire Před 8 lety

      +moonodude17 Like you I have big hands and am a tall guy. Any recommendations for an agile 2B stick that suits fast, intricate styles (samba/jazz)? I like to play this stuff as well as rock and funk etc. Can't be too heavy. Have the Thomas Lang model (biggest Vic Firth drumset stick). Great for making yourself heard in a rock band, but probably too loud for certain styles. Maybe Maple is the way to go, I have a few Maple sticks. They keep the weight down in a bigger stick. Vater Sugar Maples are good although I broke one which was bigger than a 2B in grip. Top end snapped off and I generally never break sticks clean like that as I have good technique. Their Sugar Maple 5B has held up much better. SD1 sounds intriguing, heard it's popular with drumcorps guys. Do you play drumcorps yourself? Thanks in advance for answer.

    • @moonodude17
      @moonodude17 Před 8 lety

      +fuzzylogiceire The joys of being a tall, large-handed drummer (6'2" myself).
      I think the SD1 would be a great fit for you. They're maple, but they use Hard Rock Maple instead of Vater's Sugar Maple. I haven't picked up a Sugar Maple stick in my life, but I would assume that Rock Maple would be a little more durable. I ran through the entire 'The Joy of Motion' album by Animals As Leaders with the SD1's, and they held up fine for me. The tip is also fully-rounded, so it's perfect for getting crystal-clear stick articulation. It's a .635 diameter, so a little bigger than Vic Firth's 2B, and they feel wonderful. Definitely the only "lightweight" model I'll ever use from here on out (of course, Vater's sticks are amazing as well, and I find the Vater 2B lighter than the VF version). Speaking of Vater, if you want something similar from them, give the Tim Alexander signature stick a go (with no disrespect to Mr. Alexander or Vater, it's basically an SD1 with his name on it).
      I've never marched with a corps, but I did do marching band all throughout high school, and three of those years, I used Scott Johnson (Vic Firth era, before he and the Blue Devils switched to ProMark) snare and tenor sticks, and those were nice to play.

    • @fuzzylogiceire
      @fuzzylogiceire Před 8 lety

      moonodude17
      Haha, yes indeed. I'm the same height and I believe Gavin is too. I'm not the skinny, lean type. I'm broad shouldered and have a stocky build so I guess that carries over to hand size as well.
      AAL are great and Garstkas stuff can be quite intricate so good on you for being able to play that firstly. I know Matt has learned and absorbed fusion and afro cuban stuff into a prog metal band, so that reassures me. Thanks for that insight.
      There's a great pro drummer who posts on a few different forums online and on youtube. Saw him do a cover of Fred by Tony Williams Lifetime band. Dunno if you know it but it's very challenging, fast ostinato on the hi hat and Tony is comping awesome syncopated stuff on the snare and bass against this. Anyways, this drummer plays a 2B hickory from ProMark and uses it for every gig. I've seen other videos and he obviously has great technique and is massively experienced, so that's obviously the key here. I've seen him give advice saying not to use a really thin stick if you have big hands and this follows Thomas Langs advice with playing a stick not bigger than your biggest finger. (He recommends 5Bs and up) Don't know what that Pro Mark 2B is like but while I love the feel of a bigger stick I can't imagine playing that stuff with it, great technique would obviously be a big factor. I'd hope it isn't too heavy.
      As regards the Rock Maple, I have the SD9 Driver and SD2 Bolero, which is that type of Maple. Kind of like SD9 it but not maybe not what I'm looking for completely in a really fussy sense, haha. The Bolero is a strange stick, seems to produce a nice sound but the top end and tip are a bit eccentric as sticks go. That Tim Alexander stick seems to be Sugar Maple. Must be Vaters type of Maple, their go to wood when choosing Maple.
      That drumline thing is cool. There isn't a culture of that over here. Some marching bands though and pipe bands, the drumming sections are essentially corps though, you know bagpipe music? (mainly from Scotland) Jim Kilpatrick is the most famous name drumming wise. He's a multiple world champion. At the moment though, in my country we have the World champion drumcorps at the elite pipe band level. Was lucky to have had some lessons with a member of their snare section. Very grateful to have received those lessons from such a top notch rudimental drummer. I think they've helped my hands a lot. :)

      Because they also want nice definition of the cymbals, especially from the ride? Gavin literally explained this on the video.
      Also, Gavin isn't a metal drummer, he plays a variety of styles, which demand a versatile drumstick, or different pairs for each application. He also explained that on the video.
