  • In late 2011, SONOR and Gavin began working on the 'Protean' project with the goal to create a snare drum that is as musically versatile as Gavin himself. The name 'Protean' comes from Greek mythology meaning "versatile" and "diverse." Gavin wanted this snare drum to be a daily workhorse instrument that can be quickly altered to suit the musical situation.
    In this bonus video, Gavin concentrates on tuning methods and sound, talking about the flexibility of his new signature snare drum models.

    Great idea to put rhythmically dense jazz rock as background music! It isn't distracting or nerve-wracking at all and actually enhances my concentration of the important tuning information Mr. Harrison is sharing.

    Such a well thought out snare and so well explained. I may never be worthy of such an instrument, but I can atleast tune with two keys on more common shells.

    • @oreothebest
      @oreothebest Před rokem

      He says usually he will tune the top head of the snare to fit between the first and second tom. As for the bottom he says almost as tight as it can go. I have the protean snare and for the bottom head it can go super tight that you end up ripping the head so beware.

      Vintage emperor coated on the first 3 and normal coated emperor on the floor toms. Clear ambassador for all toms on bottom. CS coated on snare and ambassador snare side. He sometimes varies on the toms from normal to vintage emperors. Also clear P3 on the kicks 90% of the time.

    Techs have drills for guitar tuning. Why not drums. Someone needs to invent a drill with a meter on it to show the torque. Otherwise just a torque wrench? Won't work?

    Wha's this BS "musically versatile" All hype and marketing. Give me a break -will ya?

    • @noah._.powell
      @noah._.powell Před 7 lety +5

      It's not "hype and marketing". Musically versatile is just having the drum be able to fit into almost any style of music based on it's sound, and qualities.

    • @bellavia5
      @bellavia5 Před 7 lety +1

      Yeah , yeah. Tell your story walking.

    • @abrahamlinksys808
      @abrahamlinksys808 Před 7 lety +3

      Musically versatile seems a pretty accurate description. There are many features on this drum that are unique to it and changeable quickly and easily. I do believe the different snare wires may be so minor that you can barely hear the difference but that's the point: there are subtle differences in musicality that can be achieved though what this drum includes. Being able to change snare wires much quicker due to the unique bottom rim, the s hoop allowing dampening rings not to fall out during playing.
      If you don't like the drum or the marketing, that's fine! But to call it bs seems kind of silly don't you think?

    • @bellavia5
      @bellavia5 Před 7 lety

      I'm free to call it BS. You're free to think that me calling it BS is silly. There's so much hype with drum products these days it makes me nauseous.

      This guy reminds me of the guy on Spinal Tap. "See -look -most amps go to 10 -but mine goes to 11. It's like having 10 -but one more".
