New Player Guide Run #1 -- Raider Gear by Day 15! E/E/L Day 0-8

  • Your first goal in any new run should be: get to 12 guys in raider gear.
    In most origins, this is doable by day 15 on the hardest difficulty, Expert/Expert/Low starting funds (E/E/L for short).
    I saw people on Reddit saying this sounded difficult, so I decided to fire up some Ironman and demonstrate how to do it.
    It's the "A New Company" background, with a random seed -- so, no shenanigans.
    This is a heavily explained run. We'll cover everything: combat, taking contracts, managing the economy, builds, all that good stuff.
    Always down to hear from you! So please leave a comment.

    Nice guide. I can usually get beyond the early game, but in some games I've had trouble with finding the right contracts. Just bad luck I guess. Though taking so many fights outside contracts very early on is something I've not been doing a lot. With exception of the undead helmets the marginally better looted gear often didn't seem worth the risk and injuries (not talking about the raider chain mail). But it also gets you XP, which makes the more difficult contracts easier. Gotta change my mindset about that.
    As far as pronunciation is concerned "ei" is always "eye" and "ie" is a long "ee". And "st" is "sht". So Stein is "shtine", not "steen".

    • @wkatz0
      @wkatz0  Před 15 dny

      Thanks for the German lesson! I'll try to remember that. Ok, so "Stein" is "shtine" and "Zweihander" is Zveehander?"
      Yes -- exp is arguably the best resource in the game. Something I didn't show in this video (because I didn't know it at the time!) is that Fast Adaptation and Nine Lives are two of the biggest power spikes in the game.
      Every early game bro I hire (unless he's ranged, or a high-quality bro) gets those two perks at his first two level-ups. FA makes him WAY more likely to hit; 9L is a huge defensive power spike.
      So, every clean (no injuries) fight you can take, even if there's little-to-no gear, is worth taking. This is how you snowball.
      This is the mindset shift: the goal is not to "do contracts;" the goal is to "take fights." Contracts spawn extra fights that are specifically calibrated to your team strength. 1-skull Follow the Tracks, for instance, is virtually always winnable.
      Between contracts and random patrols (groups of enemies wandering the map), you should be able to sustain 1 fight per day. (We call that, "fight density.")

      Zv-eye or tsv-eye I guess. You can just look up the pronunciation of Zwei separately. The 'ä' (or ae without diacritics) is like the 'a' in "cat" (æ or ɛ in IPA). It's really not much different from the literal translation as "two-hander"
      Yeah, I've been taking Fast Adaption on some people who miss quite a bit. Like the crossbow guy since you often take 50/50s

    I suppose playing the game confidently provides a huge luck bonus to your hitchance or something? Because I swear the first 3 fights had impossible day 1 lvl 1 accuracy from his bros, almost every swing a hit and near insta kill. I can't even get that sort of hit consistency in fights on day 20 with guys at lvl 5 or 6 with a full surround. Is this actually Battle Brothers being played? I dont understand. How is he able to get such efficient hitchance from every bro when the enemies arent even surrounded??

    • @wkatz0
      @wkatz0  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Hmm, maybe I did get lucky, let's go back and watch the first fight. These are the attacks:
      1. Spear bro. Nailed two pokes.
      2. Dagger bro, nailed two stabs.
      3. Shield/spear bro. Nailed two pokes at 81%.
      4. Xbow guy. Misses a 62%.
      5. Pitchfork guy. Misses a 70%.
      6. Axe guy. Misses a 61%.
      ---Next turn---
      1. Dagger guy, misses a 63% with high ground.
      2. Spear guy, nails a poke for the kill.
      3. Spear/shield guy, " " " "
      4. Axe bro, hits a 61%.
      5. Xbow guy, misses a 59%.
      So that was the first two turns we were exchanging blows with the brigands.
      I think, when you break it down, you'll see that I didn't get particularly lucky. The spears were the ones that hit the most, which isn't surprising, since they get +20% to hit. I did miss a number of fairly high percentage shots, but I had good positioning, so it didn't screw us too badly.

    This is a nice video, gave me a good basis for thinking about how to position bros better and how to use shields and double grip together on seperate guys.
    I'm curious though how come you're taking ranged defense?
    Edit: Holy shit that fearless peasant.

    • @wkatz0
      @wkatz0  Před rokem +7

      Edit: Dude! That YOLO peasant helped me to win an insane fight. He died a true Chad.
      Thanks, glad that you found the video helpful.
      As far as ranged defense, when the AI is deciding who to shoot at, it looks at "value" of the shot -- aka, how much damage does the guy do vs. how squishy is he? Meaning, the AI would prefer to target your backliners. So, RDEF is fairly good on backliners. Also, certain frontline backgrounds (Oathtakers) often start with negative RDEF! Meaning, even if you put heavy armor on that guy, he's going to get pincushioned and die pretty quickly. So, frontliners with abnormally low RDEF will also get a couple of 4's, again, IF there's a level when all their other rolls suck.
      So, ultimately, taking RDEF is situational based on how the other rolls look, with somewhat higher value on backliners vs. frontliners. Backliners, ideally I'd get to 20 RDEF by level 11. Frontliners, maybe 5 -- as long as they're not negative. Does that make sense?

    hey man loved the video! im learning to play this game, its so cool. so, what does pleb mace mean?

    • @wkatz0
      @wkatz0  Před 8 měsíci +2

      Glad you're enjoying the videos, and thanks for letting me know. Pleb Mace is a build for low quality brothers in the early game. It's basically a mace shield stunner guy. Perks like fast adaptation, nine lives, Shield mastery, mace mastery, nimble, underdog, fearsome. That's a good build for any early game brother to maximize his value on the battlefield. Hope that helps!

    • @wkatz0
      @wkatz0  Před 8 měsíci

      @ no problem! One more thing, the nice thing about the shield mace build, is it stays relevant. If you're looking at a tough fight, you can bring one of your pledge guys out of the reserves and throw him into a dangerous position, and he's fairly tanky. And even if he does die, he wasn't that good to begin with, so no worries.

    •  Před 8 měsíci

  • @fang_xianfu
    @fang_xianfu Před 2 lety +4

    Great video! I would've liked more detail about why you chose certain roles for brothers, for example why the daytaler at 36:05 is fodder. You also mentioned taking a risk by not buying tools: how do you decide when and where to buy tools?

    • @wkatz0
      @wkatz0  Před 2 lety +8

      That's a great question.
      When I hire a guy, I'm looking at his stats. What does he start with? Also, where are his stars? And with those stars, where will his stats end up at lvl 11?
      With that particular guy, ultimately, his melee attack (M-ATT) is simply too low to do much. He started at 45 (low roll) with no stars. So if I level M-ATT every level, he ends up at 65 at level 11. That's really bad.
      Now, if the guy had good melee defense and better stars, I could make him a tank, and melee attack wouldn't matter. But with his low hit points, fatigue, and especially resolve (30 is quite low), he's not a good tank candidate.
      Hence, fodder.
      Perhaps I'll make a video soon explaining builds and roles. Sounds like it might be helpful!

    • @wkatz0
      @wkatz0  Před rokem +7

      Hey, I realize I never answered your other question.
      When and where to buy tools? Generally 250 or less is a good price for tools. So, if you have a lot of money, and see cheap tools, it's recommended to load up.
      In the early game, though, you're kinda poor. That being said, if buying overpriced tools means the difference between being able to take a fight or not, you suck it up and buy the tools, because fight density is the most important thing in a run.
      Hope that helps!

    A thing you have to love about this game is it makes you really value the small things, a bundle of javelins here, a nice hat there...
    Ps: no early shields? Theyre pretty good at that point of the game...

    • @wkatz0
      @wkatz0  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I prefer to use intelligent positioning to maximize the contact my shield guys take, so my other guys can dual-grip their weapons for the +25% damage bonus.
      That's typically how I play and it seems to work :)
      That being said, my dual-gripping bros will nearly always have an emergency shield in the pocket, in case they find themselves in a crappy position. They also usually get 9 Lives these days, which is a super-strong early game defensive perk.

  • @edgarsantos3034
    @edgarsantos3034 Před rokem

    Thanks for the video. It was kinda of a bad starting position to start in the north cuz the barbarian fights don't give much in terms of gear compared to thugs down south. Could have rerolled, it would be no biggie. I realized i gotta use spearwall more, it really helps stall the enemy down to a crawl. I tend to not have the best approach for the clashing front lines and pay the price for it.

    • @wkatz0
      @wkatz0  Před rokem +1

      Glad you found that helpful! I find that many newer players tend to pop spear wall too early. The right time to do it is when enemies commit to an approach Vector to within one or two tiles, then they have no other option to use their action points other than run into the spear wall and just try it. Alternatively, it can be used to dissuade an enemy from going to a particular tile, as a deterrent.
