Retro Studios has amazing attention to detail, like their design philosophy is pretty much "if a platform is floating in the air, it has to be floating for a reason." Every single platform in Returns and Tropical Freeze is either always sticking out from something in the background or has a justification for floating. Both of these games are some of the best platformers I have ever played, and I find myself coming back to them on occasion.

honestly as a huge music fan I thought his review of the soundtrack was fucking great, dude explained shit perfectly and entertainingly and made me appreciate the soundtrack more than I did previously, which is what a good review should always do.
His DKC video felt like the ultimate blend of Fantano style musical exploration and classic Dunkey comedy. Made me feel like I was hearing the soundtrack for the first time all over again.
DK Frozen Ape's OST goes so hard that David Wise basically wrote 3 songs for each individual level. It is impossible to appreciate all of the work he put in, but it is a magical experience every time.
If the DK series has to leave us for the time being, I'm incredibly thankful this genuinely incredible game is what we were left with as the finale. Merry DK December!

Most people are surprised to find out it's a keyboard, as it sounds kinda guitar-y. Tropical Freeze was included in one of Dunkey's "Best of" videos - I think it was 2019 - and his blurb about it in that video was enough to convince me to buy it for the Switch. What a sublime experience all around. Especially happy to see Grasslands Groove get singled out too (at 4:09) - that level (and music) has stuck with me since my first play through of it.

Music in this game was so good, gotta mention the Big top bop boss music.... shit is soooo good. First time I got to it I kept dying to the boss on purpose so I could get further into the song and listen to it, shit was awesome.
I liked the one on Wii where at the end of the level you got to shake the controller so DK would beat the shit out of the Boss. My mom loved it as well lol
Donkey Kong Country Returns! I played it on 3DS last year, and it made my commutes to work so much more enjoyable. Thinking I'll pick up Tropical Freeze after this video. It's really put me in the mood to hear some David Wise magic again.

As far as 2D platformers go, it's way up there. I like how none of the platforms are just weird floaty things. There's always some tangible part of the world you're jumping on, instead of mysterious video game objects.

I appreciate how much dunkey showcases music. The music is what always hooks me personally in games. I've talked many recommendations just because of the sound design and music production.
What im noticing even more is the fact this was made on old hardware first, then re-released on switch, and it looks great - But pokemon games with 15 FPS that looks like playstation 3 graphics but worse is ok...
Tropical Freeze was also co-developed by Monster Games. My dad actually worked on this game as one of the many digital artists. He says he designed some of the trees in the early levels as well as some of the vegetation in the water levels.
I love how genuinely intrigued dunkey is by the design and quality of the donkey Kong games, hearing him gush over these types of things makes me so happy

I've watched this video like 3 times already and I can't get over how smoothly you transition into Busted Bayou. Truly, a track that good needs few words for introduction. Beautiful end to Donkey Kong December.
I think it's fine that we won't see another Donkey Kong game for a while (unless Nintendo is secretly working on a new 3D Donkey Kong game for the end of the Switch!). Nintendo is known to juggle their franchises while introducing new ones, except for the main ones like Mario and Zelda. I've been loving the Switch ports of Wii-U games (like Tropical Freeze!) that even give us small pieces of new content, as I never had a Wii-U. But through the Switch, we also got a 3D open-world Kirby game, Luigi's Mansion 3, a new home console Animal Crossing game, a new Pokemon Snap game, not to mention Metroid Dread and the upcoming Metroid Prime 4.
Still my favorite OST from any video game ever, and I'll be surprised if it gets beaten out. There's a level called Irate Eight where you're on land for less than 10 seconds before jumping into the water, and Wise put a four and a half minute song to play during that section. The boss themes are incredible, the Rocket Barrel motif is always remixed in a distinctive and transformative way, and everytime a piece of a track from an earlier DKC game is used I get chills. Every single level in this game should be in an art museum, everything is so finely crafted it's absolutely criminal that it's been almost 9 years since any other form of Donkey Kong media. I love Returns as well, but Tropical Freeze holds a very special place in my heart and I will never stop wishing for another Donkey Kong game. Until next December, Dunkey Kong. 🦍🍌

$50, incredible. But seriously, games with great music always have high attention to detail and replayability. It's a sure sign the entire studio went all out and put love into their craft. When I get nostalgic for the music while I'm still beating the game for the first time, then I know it's a timeless classic.
@@TriforceWisdom64 also the first watch dogs, it has very atmospheric music that even loops itself and blends with the gameplay, like if you stay on a car chase for very long the car chase soundtrack ( wich is amazing and electric) will continue with you throughout! I love that. The police chase the default theme and especially the lucky Quinn theme wich is very scary are amazing songs that makes me love that game.

@@MegaMicah12 i played WD for about 3 years, it is a very atmospheric game and it has a very good concept and the story and characters were amazing and fun, it's just the execution, the gameplay, i mean i like driving and this is a Driver 4 of sorts but it's made by Ubisoft and the budget went into making this game seems good, not into it actually being good. As a matter of fact they did watch dogs within watch dogs, there's a minigame called Alone and it is phenomenal, i wish that That was watch dogs it works so much better, you only have about 2 guns and you have no ammo for neither and it takes a lot to kill the robots there and they are cameras and it's scary since you're being hunted throughout Chicago, the problem is that they don't expand beyond that, but if the main game was focused on that idea it could be amazing. I hope one day someone makes a spiritual sucessor to Watch dogs using Alone as a basis.
Tropical Freeze was my kid's first DK game, and what a frustrating game it was, but they loved it. Being 8 or 9 and overcoming those harder levels makes you feel great. Reminds me of the old school NES days of hard games.
The fact that he announced "Donkey Kong December" exactly one year ago and (imo) he took one whole year to make these videos with his own pace and time to give us 6 videos that are an entire DOCUMENTARY of 30 minutes about the story, art and influence of Donkey Kong... 1:35 This perfectly sums up my first playthrough of Tropical Freeze on Wii U, I just rushed through it instead of giving it the attention it deserved. I ended up buying it on Switch mainly out of guilt tripping myself.

Oh man you're on point about the music of DK Tropical Freeze! I remember when I played through one of the last levels of World 2, the one in which DK goes through several windmills and ziplines through moutain tops. When I played it during the zipline parts, the music synced perfectly as DK slid on the vines, spinning around to make the bells hanging near the zipline ring to break obstacles. It was magical, as if the blowing wind was conjuring the music and twirling around the bells.
I had the biggest smile on my face listening to how much dunkey loves the music in this game. That smile faded once I was reminded of the fact that Donkey Kong is dead 😢
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is such a outstanding and incredible video game sequel of all time on so many levels. The gameplay, graphics, and levels was spectacular and phenomenal due to it being unique, inventive, and challenging. It was decent. To this day I still play it and I consider it a classic. This was the first game my son really loved. We played the shit out of it together. The music, man. The tracks invoke tears of nostalgia and joy. Just like the I was a kid with the first three DKs. Magical.

Even the ones that have no reason for floating... have a reason for floating. The final world has platforms with runes on them that make them float.

What im noticing even more is the fact this was made on old hardware first, then re-released on switch, and it looks great - But pokemon games with 15 FPS that looks like playstation 3 graphics but worse is ok...
Tropical Freeze was also co-developed by Monster Games. My dad actually worked on this game as one of the many digital artists. He says he designed some of the trees in the early levels as well as some of the vegetation in the water levels.

This is a beautiful series that truly brings tears my eyes and as I weep I simply mutter the words “donkey Kong December” to my self rhythmically over and over again

I think it's fine that we won't see another Donkey Kong game for a while (unless Nintendo is secretly working on a new 3D Donkey Kong game for the end of the Switch!). Nintendo is known to juggle their franchises while introducing new ones, except for the main ones like Mario and Zelda. I've been loving the Switch ports of Wii-U games (like Tropical Freeze!) that even give us small pieces of new content, as I never had a Wii-U. But through the Switch, we also got a 3D open-world Kirby game, Luigi's Mansion 3, a new home console Animal Crossing game, a new Pokemon Snap game, not to mention Metroid Dread and the upcoming Metroid Prime 4.
Bought it a few weeks after it launched. Me and my brother were blown away! We adored just about every second we played from this game!
There still 3 more days to go dunkey. Hit that Kong once more!

Dunkey is truly ahead of the curve, reviewing a game due to come out in just a few short months.
Still my favorite OST from any video game ever, and I'll be surprised if it gets beaten out. There's a level called Irate Eight where you're on land for less than 10 seconds before jumping into the water, and Wise put a four and a half minute song to play during that section. The boss themes are incredible, the Rocket Barrel motif is always remixed in a distinctive and transformative way, and everytime a piece of a track from an earlier DKC game is used I get chills. Every single level in this game should be in an art museum, everything is so finely crafted it's absolutely criminal that it's been almost 9 years since any other form of Donkey Kong media. I love Returns as well, but Tropical Freeze holds a very special place in my heart and I will never stop wishing for another Donkey Kong game. Until next December, Dunkey Kong. 🦍🍌
This was such an amazing video. I was throughly enjoying it the whole time and I was not expecting to get sad at that end. I almost never have a verbal reaction to something I am watching, but this got a sad “no” when it ended

$50, incredible. But seriously, games with great music always have high attention to detail and replayability. It's a sure sign the entire studio went all out and put love into their craft. When I get nostalgic for the music while I'm still beating the game for the first time, then I know it's a timeless classic.
There are exceptions. SpongeBob SquarePants Supersponge on PS1 and GBC is a garbage game with phenomenal music.
@@TriforceWisdom64 also the first watch dogs, it has very atmospheric music that even loops itself and blends with the gameplay, like if you stay on a car chase for very long the car chase soundtrack ( wich is amazing and electric) will continue with you throughout! I love that. The police chase the default theme and especially the lucky Quinn theme wich is very scary are amazing songs that makes me love that game.

@@MegaMicah12 i played WD for about 3 years, it is a very atmospheric game and it has a very good concept and the story and characters were amazing and fun, it's just the execution, the gameplay, i mean i like driving and this is a Driver 4 of sorts but it's made by Ubisoft and the budget went into making this game seems good, not into it actually being good. As a matter of fact they did watch dogs within watch dogs, there's a minigame called Alone and it is phenomenal, i wish that That was watch dogs it works so much better, you only have about 2 guns and you have no ammo for neither and it takes a lot to kill the robots there and they are cameras and it's scary since you're being hunted throughout Chicago, the problem is that they don't expand beyond that, but if the main game was focused on that idea it could be amazing. I hope one day someone makes a spiritual sucessor to Watch dogs using Alone as a basis.

Tropical Freeze was my kid's first DK game, and what a frustrating game it was, but they loved it. Being 8 or 9 and overcoming those harder levels makes you feel great. Reminds me of the old school NES days of hard games.

The fact that he announced "Donkey Kong December" exactly one year ago and (imo) he took one whole year to make these videos with his own pace and time to give us 6 videos that are an entire DOCUMENTARY of 30 minutes about the story, art and influence of Donkey Kong... 1:35 This perfectly sums up my first playthrough of Tropical Freeze on Wii U, I just rushed through it instead of giving it the attention it deserved. I ended up buying it on Switch mainly out of guilt tripping myself.

Oh man you're on point about the music of DK Tropical Freeze!
I remember when I played through one of the last levels of World 2, the one in which DK goes through several windmills and ziplines through moutain tops. When I played it during the zipline parts, the music synced perfectly as DK slid on the vines, spinning around to make the bells hanging near the zipline ring to break obstacles. It was magical, as if the blowing wind was conjuring the music and twirling around the bells.
The Metroid Prime music in the first half was a blast of nostalgia
I had the biggest smile on my face listening to how much dunkey loves the music in this game.
That smile faded once I was reminded of the fact that Donkey Kong is dead 😢
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is such a outstanding and incredible video game sequel of all time on so many levels. The gameplay, graphics, and levels was spectacular and phenomenal due to it being unique, inventive, and challenging. It was decent. To this day I still play it and I consider it a classic. It never gets old.😍💯😎👍

Please do. Even the hardest, most frustrating DK game is a very worthwhile experience. And the easiest DK games are not so easy they're boring, but so chill they're therapeutic.

This was the first game my son really loved. We played the shit out of it together. The music, man. The tracks invoke tears of nostalgia and joy. Just like the I was a kid with the first three DKs. Magical.

It's incredibly underrated and forgotten. Retro Studios used it as stepping stone for their masterpiece Tropical Freeze and never looked back. The Switch version should've included both!
