  • Limiting yourself to building cabinets or furniture without drawers is like driving a car without a steering wheel--in both cases, you won't get too far. Don't be intimidated by today's drawer-slide hardware. Using a quick jig and a repeatable step-by-step process, WOOD Magazine's Jeff Mertz shows a super simple method that makes mounting drawers easy.

  • @diver165
    @diver165 Před 7 lety +7

    Personally, I would attach the hardware through the drawer face and the drawer box itself (buy longer screws). Makes for a much fast and easier hardware change. And in doing this, counter sinking isn't necessary. But it does give it a more detailed finish.

  • @DarronRansbarger
    @DarronRansbarger Před 7 lety

    Great explanation!
    Question: what if the cabinet is not perfectly square? That is, what if it gets slightly narrower as it goes from front face to back of the cabinet? I made a cabinet-styled workbench for my shop and would like to put drawers in it. However, it turns out that the back horizontal space is just under 1/16th inch narrower than the front (like 2 or 3/64ths to be more precise). Is there a reliable way to account for this sloppiness to ensure that the drawer doesn't bind up?

  • @pennygiller2377

    I d like the drawers removable from the cupboard so I can take them with me when I move...that s alot of work to leave them there...is it possible to make a shelf inside the cabinet that sets in and a drawer can be attached on the flat bottom surface of the shelf? It may not be ideal but its functional and I can take the set up with me...

    Some draws are very deep, can I find these accessories in a regular store like Home Depot or Lowe’s?
    Also, why don’t you use any glue for the draw face?

    • @richardlug6139
      @richardlug6139 Před 5 lety

      Reason for no glue is so if you ever want to refinish the draw fronts you can just remove the fronts and not the whole drawer. Also if the drawer front is ever damaged you could just get a new front and not the whole drawer

    • @CharleyDC5R
      @CharleyDC5R Před 8 lety +1

      It all depends on the drawer slides you use. All you need to do is measure the thickness of the drawer slide you are using. Normally, 1/2" is the standard, but I always double check before actually building the drawers :)

  • @anthonystrother9117
    @anthonystrother9117 Před 6 lety +5

    Ok, I confess I can be a bit dense at times. I see that you have three equal size drawers that at the end appear to be equally spaced in the box. What is the math you used to measure where to place the second and third drawers? I understand that you measure to the center point on the first drawer and mark that on your case inside from the top? But if just measure down two more times the same amount from the first mark, then the second mark, will not the drawers literally sit on top of one another?

    • @heyimamaker
      @heyimamaker Před 6 lety

    • @mikewashere9660
      @mikewashere9660 Před 6 lety +2

      Most , ..or every ball bearing side mounted slides I've ever used is 1/2" for each slide x 2, i.e. the drawer should be less 1" (if contending with less than perfect sizing, it's always better to side with more than an inch less rather than trying to pinch the slides!) less than the carcase! there are wings on the slide for a reason! This goes for slow close also.. Always check to make sure as manufacturing does make errors from time to time! I always check sizes with a good micrometer slide to measure with!
      Precision goes hand in hand with the master crafter! But a reasonable video for the DYI!
