      Thanks for noticing! If you stumble onto some of my earlier videos I wasn't always as disciplined. Thankfully, I didn't have to learn the hard way before I realized a table saw without a guard is just one careless mistake from the hospital.

    Great tips for positioning runners and drawer accurately, and the double-sided tape for the front is genius for me, as I’m installing drawers in a tight space where I can’t reach inside with the drawers closed. Thanks!

      Another tip: If you're going to be installing hardware on the drawer front, you can drill that hole, and then you can use that hole to drive a screw into the drawer box and to hold the drawer front in place while you drive the final screws in from inside. Then you can remove the "front" screw and install your knob.

    Hello, The Biggest mistake you made in building your Drawer is that the "sides" should have been extended beyond the front and back parts of the drawer. It would have given you a little more Mechanical strength. It would also serve another use too. There would be no end grain showing at the side-front of the drawer since your drawer front would hide the butt joint. Just thought you should know... Greg

    • @GrayHouseStudio
      @GrayHouseStudio  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks for your feedback Greg. My goal in this video was to show a "simple" way to build drawers and I figured the drawer face in my design would cover the end grain. Thankfully, years later they are still holding up just as strong as day one.

      +Mr Man Yes, that is definitely the traditional way to build drawers. Our goal was to share a quick way without needing a dado or fancy table saw skills. I'm happy to report that after a year of hard use the drawers still function good as new.

    if you are cutting a "slit" in the length of the wood it is called a "groove". if you are cutting one across the grain its called a "dado"

    • @andyfunke9484
      @andyfunke9484 Před 5 lety

      I'm pretty sure, whether the slit/groove is with the grain or across it, it's still called a "dado". It's either that or I've been doing it wrong for fifty odd years, and I've made and used just about every type of wood joint there is.

    How do you measure for drawers if your cabinet does not have any style/trim under each drawer. I have a cabinet with three drawers with nothing separating each one.

    • @GrayHouseStudio
      @GrayHouseStudio  Před 3 lety

      I had that same issue recently and just decided the depth of each drawer I wanted and left several inches between each drawer. Then, the drawer faces were the most critical and created the final look. I don’t usually make the drawer faces the same dimensions as the drawer box.

  • @robertblahnik

    Glue and pin nails will always fail over time when you do it the way you did. Had you went through the sides with the pin nails you would always be supporting both front and rear panels.

  • @revedmusic
    @revedmusic Před 6 lety +7

    Nice video but this is a large drawer and if there is any weight in it the bottom will bow and evetually low small things to slide out the back and eventually the bottom will fail. This method is suitable for drawers a ft. wide or less. because not much weight can be put in. The method of using a nail gun to attach the front of the door to the end grain of the sides is gong to fail for sure. Pulling the drawer results in in line tension and the nails can come out. There is no shear value to a nail that is in line with the way it is pulled. I suggest a more sophisticated joint for the front. The door face is okay because the drawer pull will use through bolts.

    • @GrayHouseStudio
      @GrayHouseStudio  Před 6 lety +1

      Believe it or not the Masonite is very strong. We made two file cabinet drawers under the one in the video and have had about 40lbs or paper sitting on the bottom of the drawer with no problem.

    Instead of using a thin sheet of board for the bottom, i can still use plywood right?

    • @GrayHouseStudio

    • @pterafirma
      @pterafirma Před 6 lety

      Yes, but you need to make a track, for accurate ripping of sheet materials with your circular saw. There are plenty of good videos on how to make one - I recommend using a long piece of aluminum angle screwed to a strip of MDF for the zero-clearance edge.

    Everybody has their own way to make something. If you want a.drawer just.for looks..this is the drawer for you...if you want a drawer for functionality, this is definitely not the drawer. As many have said..the bottom will sag with any kind of weight in it over time...and the front will eventually fail being that it's nailed with boards in wrong direction...but the drawer u made looks nice, I will give u that much....just not practical 😎

    Sides should run from front to the back of the drawer, with the front and back of the drawer fastened in between. The slot that the drawer bottom is installed in is called a dado. Having the terminology right goes a long way to letting people believe you know what your talking about. Just some honest advice, from someone who's been doing woodwork for fifty odd years. Good job on the video though.

    • @JosephQPublic

    Sides and fronts are the wrong way around. Sides should come all the way forward, the front insets. Then your nails, screws, dowels, whatever, go through the sides into the drawer front and lock everything together. It puts the force of opening and closing perpendicular to the fasteners, instead of parallel. Much stronger. Great job on the video otherwise.

    • @deaniweenie
      @deaniweenie Před 6 lety +3

      Rick I fully agree with you, this drawer has little in the way of strength especially if it is a frequent-use drawer such as a kitchen cutlery drawer or a drawer that is to carry any weight. The front is liable to just pull off as the joints weaken and same with the back if the drawer contents continually slide backwards as the drawer opens. Also, because of the long span of the front and rear panels and the 'floating' bottom the panels a likely to flex which usually results in the bottom slipping out of the grove. I would be inclined to add a stretcher, front to back in the middle of the drawer beneath the base to try and prevent the front and back flexing. It reminds me of the really cheaply made furniture you get in large discount stores. A little internet research or even taking time to study his own design beforehand would have made for a much better tutorial. But hey, we all learn as we go along and Brent has a gentle tutorial style and his videos are pleasantly watchable :-)

To give an update over 4 years later - I have loaded these drawers up and have had various office supplies in them now and haven't had any issue with them bowing or breaking. I suppose you should consider what you are going to store in them but we have had all sorts of stuff in them and haven't had any issue yet several years later. :)
