How to Build a Simple Pantry Cabinet with Pull Out Shelves

- Hey friends, let's build a simple basic pantry cabinet! This works as a stand alone storage cabinet OR can be integrated with existing cabinets.
The great thing about this basic build is that it's easy to customize. I built this one for my parent's garage and the ceilings were pretty tall. So I made this one a full 8'.
Standard pantry cabinet height is generally around 84" tall, though, so that's what I made the printable plans for. Plans include tips for modifications.
Grab the printable building plans here: woodshop-diaries.myshopify.co...
Grab more project details here: www.woodshopdiaries.com/how-t...
This cabinet will be installed in the next video. It should be secured to the wall studs as noted in the plans linked above to prevent tip over.
By the way...I promise what I hear in the video editor sounds nothing like what actually uploads to CZcams. I'm doing my best, but sometimes the background noises aren't audible in the editor and they are after I upload here. So bear with me.

Literally follow bc she's focused on her work and not trying to get people here from other reasons. 👍🏻 Lol love the random cat too; Great work Shara
You did the whole thing with no second hand help. That's impressive and while at it, your channel is awesome!
That will be the fanciest garage cabinet in your parent's neighborhood! It turned out SO nice.......probably because of all the help you had from Bubby. He was definitely wanting to be near you today. Thanks for another great video!!!
Thank you so much! I can't wait to show it in its place in the next video! Bubs was definitely a lot of help haha. He put his stamp of approval on it, so I knew it was good to go! Thanks so much for watching and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Really beautiful work, Shara! It looks fantastic! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching and hope you and yours have a great rest of your weekend!
Love the pull-out drawers. I'm retro-fitting an existing old kitchen cabinet b4 a full reno. Thanks so much!
Another great project. Love your videos. I always learn something new about the build process.
So glad you enjoy them! I appreciate you watching and hope you have a great weekend!
I'm constantly amazed at the simplicity of your projects and the beautiful completion. I can see where several applications of this project can be used in my home although the cabinet is not something I need. I always pick up a few tricks when I watch your videos and use them elsewhere. I have purchased plans from you and those projects turned out to be easy , fun and accurate. Thank you always Shara
You’re a beast. 🙌
Said one beast to another!😀
No, YOU'RE the beast 😎
I love how clean the things you make look, it's a great style
I'm forever impressed by your ability to just hold panels in place when driving in pocket hole screws. Mine shift around unless I've secured them with at least 150 clamps.
I know everyone works and experiences things differently, but I have more trouble using clamps than I do not using clamps in most assembly cases. There’s nothing wrong with either way, but it’s just funny how different things work for different people. 🤷♀️
Nice work ! I'm fan ! ❤
Thank you so much! I really appreciate you watching!
Fantastic job Shara!
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching and hope you have a great weekend!
Always love your projects and how simple you make them look. I'm sure it's not that simple but still turn out beautiful. Have a great weekend Shara. Steve
Thank you so much! I always appreciate you watching 😊 hope you and yours have a wonderful rest of your weekend!
One day I'm going to do a tour of my house and show all the wooden projects I got from your videos 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Great work as always! Love the style and approach.
Another fantastic build
I love that you build everything using simple prosumer tools that you can purchase at any local big box store. No lime green anywhere. You don't need to spend a fortune to get accuracy and a quality looking build. Cheers!
A lot of people like to tell me I need "better" tools, but honestly, I use the tools I do on purpose just to prove expensive tools aren't required to build nice things. Patience and determination have far more benefits than a $300 drill 😆 Anyway, I truly appreciate you watching and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
@@WoodshopDiaries Back atcha.
Your videos are so inspirational, thanks.
So glad you enjoy them! Thank you!
Awesome project and it turned out great!👍🏾
Love this! I need to build pull out drawers for my pantry and this was a great video for how to do it 👍
Nice job, Shara! Your project turned out great and, as you said, it can be used in various applications.
Thank you! It can definitely add a little extra storage to just about any room of the house. I appreciate you watching and hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Excelent work, simple and with quality. Congrats.
Thank you so much! I appreciate your kind words and hope you have a great rest of your weekend!
Just found your content at tiktok 2hrs ago. You now have me making numbers to get some tools and make some projects at home. Thank you for the inspiration!
This looks amazing
Thank you so much for watching! Have a great weekend!
Very nice 👌
Thank you! I really appreciate you watching and hope you have a great weekend!
As usual looks very nice, the cabinet too. I loved your offset vanity and had to show it to my wife and she agreed, maybe the most beautiful vanity I have ever seen.
Thank you! I finally got that vanity installed last week and I'm finishing up the trim work in the bathroom this weekend. I'll have to share it in a CZcams short video (I didn't film the remodel) soon so you can see it in its final space!
I enjoy following your vlogs. You make simple but functional diy projects that we can follow.
So glad you enjoy them! I appreciate your kind words and hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Fantastic love the colour
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching! 🙌
You're most welcome
This is exactly what I am planning to build for my pantry! Thank you for this! Wish me luck.
I hope it's helpful! You got this 🙌 Happy building!
The craftsmanship goes up every video I swear! Good Stuff!
I appreciate that! Thank you so much for watching and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Okay, got my Saturday morning Woodshop Diaries fix. All is right with the world again 😊. Love this back-to-basics classic Shara build! One thing I'll point out to us who are watching (and you probably know it already)... Shara downplays her attention to dimension details; things like the precise sliding of the pull-out shelves and the fit and finish of the doors do not happen without some careful work on her part. Well done. Looking forward to seeing the whole picture! And thanks for being a donor. One more thing... 9:07 you know he did that on purpose, right?😂
Haha I always appreciate you watching! I can’t wait to share the whole garage update in the next video-Bubs makes his appearance in that one too 🤣 I’ve come to the conclusion Bubs is far smarter than we give him credit for. He does nothing unplanned. It’s all a calculated move to see how far he can push his limits 😆
Thank you so much for watching and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Shara, this is a very nice project and a practical one that I’m sure your parents will enjoy! The color and the upper doors turned out great! I like the idea of the gas struts too! Bubby made a great appearance and was just trying to help! lol…. Have a great weekend and keep on building!
Thank you so much! I think if I hadn’t made it the full 8’ tall, the gas struts would have worked fine. But…whoops!
It was good practice installing them anyway haha. I’m sure I’ll find a use for them in a future project.
Bubs always has to make his presence known 🤣 he will be in the next one too 🙈 I hope you have a wonderful weekend as well and I appreciate you watching!
My husband says, "she's like an expert!" I rush in and say, " Shara is a Woodworking Guru!"
Haha I’m definitely no guru or expert! 🤣 But I do enjoy a simple cabinet build 😁 I appreciate you guys watching and hope you have a great weekend!
@@WoodshopDiaries Hi, Shara. I am not sure that you understand how novice a great many of your viewers are. You use fairly simple tools and readily available supplies and explain your projects in easy to understand language. To most of the members of "Shara's Army", you are an expert. I have built several of your projects and I look forward to your videos each weekend. Thanks for another enjoyable and informative video.
The cabinet looks great and I like the gray color. All of your work is very well made and looks good. Thanks for this latest tutorial.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate you watching and hope you have a wonderful rest of your weekend!
Nicely done!
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching!
Thank you thank you… I have been searching for a diy build exactly like this!!! You rock! I just love your designs and explanation of how to do these projects yourself instead of hiring it out or having to overspend for junk!
I’m so happy this is helpful! Someone over on Instagram asked for a price comparison for how this compares to a prebuilt one and a similar but smaller cabinet was $1800 (plus shipping!) and the lumber for this was about $300. So a huge savings plus it’s bigger plus it’s custom. It’s a great project to DIY. Happy building and thank you so much for watching. Have a great rest of your weekend!
I like that you did a mixture of pull out shelves and adjustable shelves. The end result looks good and well made. I also think your cat coming in to say "Hi!" to you repeatedly was both cute and funny.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the mix and match style :) Bubby (the cat) was a lot of help for this project--I was glad to have his company throughout haha. Thanks so much for watching and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
I envy your parents by having such a nice piece (again) in their garage .......... must be forbidden to hide such great stuff.
Well done Shara and ........ I wasn't expecting something less coming out of your workshop (aka "hands") ........ nice color too!
Have a nice weekend and greetings from the Netherlands 🙂!
My parents had to put up with me as a kid-I owe them a few nice things in return 😆 I can’t wait to show the whole space this is going into in the next video! I appreciate you watching and your kind words. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!
@@WoodshopDiaries I wish more "kids" came to the understanding with the things they have to put up to living at home. Nice of you to "re-pay" your parent back in this way. Can't wait to see the whole space and ...... enjoy your parents as long as possible. And ..... they can also be proud raising a beautiful and understanding daughter!
you make it look so easy. cheers
Thank you! I appreciate you watching and hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Very good work!
Thank you so much! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Nice job girl!
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching!
Great cabinet and video!
Great video as always Shara getting ready to start building stuff for my shop and definitely going to use your cabinet videos to help me Thanks for sharing
Awesome! I hope they're helpful! Thank you so much for watching and happy building!
amazing project!
Love your vids...will do some buildings soon using your tips
Come sempre un bellissimo lavoro, complimenti.
Thank you for showing your mistakes as well as your successes. It’s helpful to see that it *does* happen, but also how to turn it into a success. Thanks for another truly helpful video!
As always, a beautiful creation. Thank you for sharing
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching 😊
Very nice build and thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching! I hope you enjoyed it 😊
@@WoodshopDiaries I really did. Love the simple instructions. Great fun.
This is amazing
Thank you! So happy you enjoyed this project! 😊
Love the build Shara! And I see Bubby approved of the design as well.
Thank you! Bubs gave his stamp of approval, so this is on it's way to my parents to be installed for the next video haha! Thank you for watching and have a great weekend!
I love to see this type of bad assery here!! Instant sub. I look forward to learning from you 💛.
I have to say you made this so easy to follow and used tools that I have! Great job on this video!
Don't know how you knew I was getting ready to build my wife a pantry -- did she tell you :) thanks for the timely video!
Haha just good timing 😉 I hope this helps you with your build and I'm sure your wife will love whatever you make for her. Happy building! 🙌
Wonderful project Shara, love the color you chose. For me i would love to keep the flip up top door. So glad to see you back!
The flip up top was awesome. I think if I had just made the cabinet a little shorter, it would have worked fine. Or maybe if I was a little taller it might have been fine, too 🤣 but I think for my parents and this particular cabinet, the double doors were probably a better option. I’ll definitely have to save the hardware to try it again in another build!
Simple but a beauty!! 😍👏🏼
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching and hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Good call on the thicker bottoms for the pull outs. Great project, well done.
I really enjoy watching you work. I’m not building any of it but you make it look cool and easy.
so so good!
You need your own TV show.
Haha I don't know about that 😂 I'm probably too chill/boring for TV! But my pets could make things interesting maybe 😆
I volunteer to come & be your assistant/funny friend to stir things up a bit😂 (Not that you even need an assistant!! I’m just DYING to learn how to do this & have a feeling you’d be incredible to learn from!) I have the materials in my garage right now to transform my sliding closet doors into doors similar to the ones on this pantry, but kind of with a design down the front - planning to ask my husband to help get me started, need to get in some practice with these tools!🤞🏻
I'm in the process of updating our garage and making it a more useful space for the wife as she is always in need of a little extra storage. I'm going to build a tall storage cabinet similar to yours, and I will include the pull out shelves. I like that addition
That sounds like a great project. Extra storage is always a nice addition--and I'm sure your wife will love that you built it for her! Thanks so much for watching and happy building!
Мне понравилось. Всё просто, чётко и понятно. Даже я смогу сделать нечто подобное! Спасибо за идею. Удачи!
You're the best
I hope you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for watching!
I really love when you show us the problems or mistakes during the project, it's so honest and humam.
Change the subject: how the painting surface looks closely? When I paint (I don't have an air compressor), I can't made a smooth effect.
Un proyecto muy bueno como siempre. saludos
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching!
Fabulous job you make it look so easy
Thank you so much! It was a simple (but heavy!) build. I appreciate you watching!
Very nice.
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching!
Lovely job, you are a super talented woodworker.
Great Job Shara! The cabinet is going to look Good! well stocked in the pantry, another perfect build Thanks for Sharing...
The cabinets look great! I love the paint color.
Thank you Shara.I need more projects.
Shara, I've been eyeing a spot in my shop to capture and store some of my clutter. I think this cabinet would be perfect. I'll probably be buying your plans as soon as I get a couple of other things done around here. Weather here is constantly changing so the only way I've found to deal with that is to have multiple projects going, some indoors and some out. Wishing you a wonderful weekend. Give Bubbs and Lucy hugs from us. They crack me up! Thanks for Sharing! 🙂🙃
Weather here is crazy too--I keep thinking this too shall pass, but I'm not looking forward to that summer heat settling in for the next few months haha. That sounds like a great idea to have multiple indoor and outdoor projects while the weather figures itself out. Bubs and Lou say hi back! I hope you and yours have a wonderful rest of the weekend. Happy building!
That a nice pantry cabinet, and a really nice garage cabinet. Parents are lucky. For the top cabinet are, I think the lift up may have still worked because that area is still pretty. Not sure how tall you are, but to get into that area may still require a step stool. It’s pretty tall. Took the doors off to make painting them easier. Yep, anything to make painting easier, huh. That’s a great build.
My parents put up with me all those years. I assume it's my reasonable service to pay them back here and there haha. I can't wait to show the whole garage update in the next video. And yes, you know me--anything to make painting easier 🙈😂 I appreciate you watching and hope you have a great rest of your weekend!
Amazing!
YASSS! You’ve read my mind! I wanted to message you asking if you could build this exact unit. I need a pantry in my kitchen. My 100yo home doesn’t have one 🙃 thank you!
That's amazing--sounds like great timing 😉 I hope this is helpful--I know extra kitchen storage is always a great addition! Happy building and have a wonderful rest of your weekend!
Very nice You inspire all of us! I used my Kreg accucut, again, just the other day. Thanks
You're so kind! So glad you enjoyed it :) I hope you have a wonderful rest of your weekend!
Background "noises" are just normal shop sounds. They put us in the shop with you. I love how Bubby just had to supervise this project, making sure you did everything correctly. Now... what is with the red bandage? Thanks for another great shop project.
I try to keep in some of the noises-I think they’re fun! But for some reason, lately, my editor makes some of my audio sound like it’s barely there. Then I upload to YT and it’s so much louder than it sounded in edits. I couldn’t hear my shop radio playing in the editor but I definitely can once it was uploaded 🙈 maybe it’s just my ears ha!
Anyway, Bubs always has to be involved. He’s great company but kind of a micro manager 😆 The bandage was from giving blood. I gave right before I filmed the finished shots so I still had my bandage on
@@WoodshopDiaries OK.. just making sure you hadn't decided to try to cut your arm off in the shop. *grin*
I'm always impressed at what you can build with so few tools. Nice job! My only question is, why no bottom pull out shelf? Seems like a perfect spot for one.
This is for my parents garage and they intentionally wanted to use this bottom shelf for large bulky items. Just a personal preference.
Belo trabalho! ótimo acabamento!
I love it! the color and everything, i still afraid of painting furniture with a roller, but yours look so great..
Thank you! My best advice is to sand well and use good quality paint. I use SW emerald paint for my furniture and it goes on smooth and levels out as it dries
@@WoodshopDiariesGreat!
Let's appreciate that this gorgeous cabinet is made using ryobi tools.
Tools don’t make things. People make things.
It is nice to see people still making sick shit without a 4k table saw, a 1k buscuit joiner, and a whole ton of white and lime green tool boxes lining their shop.
Great job...
Thank you so much!
It was fun to see your furry production director~ 😂
Finaaaalllllyyyyyy Shara has come back to CZcams, so come on and see what Shaaaaaraaaa is building.
Maybe i waschen to much wrestling lately 😂
Great Cabinet and great Video as always 👍
Haha I have been working on so many things lately I haven’t had time to get videos together. I’m glad you were excited to see a new one this weekend! 🙌
I appreciate you watching and hope you enjoyed it. Have a wonderful weekend 😎
😂😂😂😂 the boss came out to check on your work
Another Amazing Video! Thank you. 🇦🇺👴🏻
Thanks so much! So glad you enjoyed it!
Hooray, ill be building our pantry out in our new build so im trying to gain confidence and not feel overwhelmed by the size needed. So your no-nonsense videos help with that. Do you just drill pocketholes anywhere or are those measured and spaced out beforehand?
So happy this was helpful! 🙌 you got this!
As far as pocket holes, I drill them anywhere-just kind of eyeball the spacing. I don’t measure and mark them exactly.
Awesome cabinet build! Have you ever used tongue and groove stock to make cabinet doors? I bought a Bousch combo router bit, set up is tedious, yet worth it if you have more than a few doors to build. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much! I’m appreciate you watching!
I have-I show a few ways I’ve made cabinet doors in this video: czcams.com/video/1wKi7EO_g7A/video.htmlsi=Xki0VqdQnxUbpUG3
@@WoodshopDiaries Thank you! That combo bit, is like the same outcome of door 7 in your video, just instead of the table saw, a router table is used. I'm always looking for reasons to use a router on stuff tho..thanks again!!
Since you would probably need a small step stool to access the back of the upper cabinet, wouldn't that have put you in a high enough position to close the door? Great video. Been thinking of building a kitchen pantry. This video will help a lot.
This is exactly what I have been looking for to build in my kitchen. Great video! Could you use mdf instead of the 3/4 plywood to keep the cost down?
So glad you enjoyed it! You can I supposed but I don’t personally use or recommend MDF. That’s not to say it wouldn’t work, but I can’t speak on it.
That turned out very nice as always. The color you applied is nice as well. That is surely is going to be well used.
Do you think there is a tip over hazard with the pull out trays ?
Or have you made special provisions for that ?
Thank you for sharing Ms. Shara
Hi! Yes, it should be secured to the wall. We show that in the next video when it gets installed in my parents garage. This is detailed and noted in the plans and tutorial here: www.woodshopdiaries.com/how-to-build-a-basic-pantry-cabinet/
The back supports are installed specifically for the purpose of securing it to the wall.
3:02 you should call it a cat-binet 🙃 btw nice work 👍 I like the catbinet very much 👍😉
Because of the "toe kick",the height of the cabinet and the pull outs, when loaded with heavy paint cans ... did you secure the cabinet to the wall to prevent it from falling over?
Haha thank you! Yes we secured it to the wall once we got it installed in my parents garage (which will be in the next video 😊)
LOVE THIS! going to give it a whirl 😬 any idea how much the materials would cost? I'm new to building and I'm hoping it's cheaper to build than buy???
Great Video and I enjoyed watching your methods. Question: Do you believe the pocket holes, screws, and glue will provide enough load support over the term side mount draw slides? I'm building a beverage bar with pull out drawers and my initial thought was that "Heavy Duty" drawer slides where needed however after a little math applied to the weight of wine bottles figured out that 100 LBS is a lot and more than enough capcitty. Just thinking about load transfer. Thanks.
The drawer slides would give out before the pocket holes would-by FAR. Is that what you’re asking?
Shop cat reminds me of Garfield comics 🤣😂!
Girls rock😍
Do you always assume that the plywood is straight? Have you ever had any complications with the squaring? It seems like everything you do is so perfect.
Waiting on Summer break to start coping you! 20 days to go!
It’ll be here before you know it! I check my sheets before bringing them home and avoid buying anything that looks beat up, twisted or bowed. I’ll be honest, I’ve never had issue with the hardwood plywood I’ve bought not being square-at least not enough to make any difference. Now…I’ve had issues with some crappy exterior grade plywood. But…it’s crappy plywood so it’s to be expected.
At the end of the day, nothing is perfect and even if you get home with a plywood sheet that’s a little bowed or warped, 99.9% of the time, it won’t matter by the time you cut it down and assemble the project. This piece will pull that piece flat, once you trim it down, the bow gets less each cut. Your material doesn’t have to be perfect.
This video has me believing I can build anything lol
I love it, looks super nice and something I'd put in my kitchen. Any chance you could come over and help build my kitchen
Thank you! Haha if I had the time and resources to travel around and build kitchens, I totally would! I need to rebuild my own one of these days 🙈 I appreciate you watching and hope you have a wonderful weekend!
