  • The legendary master of horror covers a lot of ground in this talk with Stephen Colbert, including how he would fare in quarantine with his most feared characters, some things he learned about pandemics when doing research for "The Stand," and the many reasons he recommends reading "The Lord of the Rings." King's latest book "If It Bleeds" is available everywhere now, and his epic novel "The Stand" is coming soon as a limited series on CBS All Access. #StephenAtHome #StephenKing #TheStand

I’m from a small town in Maine, where King occasionally hangs out. I enjoyed a horror movie at my local cinema, last summer, when he was one of about 15 other movie goers there...him and two of his grandsons. It was awesome seeing his reactions to the movie and sharing a space with him! Also seen him at the local grocery store, occasionally, over the years. Have always loved him. He was one of the first horror writers I ever read as a kid, and his generous scholarship helped me go to a summer writing program at Bates College as a high schooler. He’s such a great guy and an inspiration! 😊

Or an opportunist? Someone who cares? Or someone who doesn't give a DAMN about anyone other than yourself? People may finally realize what they see and I hope they begin to seek the better part of themselves and give up this greed and petty materialism. More stuff doesn't make you happy. One reason Tolkien and King are so similar to me, is that they are both masters at character creation, and development
They build on all the characters, and they become real.

I was always partial to Faramir. I liked him more than Aragorn, because Aragorn seemed to have no choice in his destiny, whereas Faramir could have chosen to be like brother Boromir but was always better even against the wishes of father Denethor. I also liked Eowyn. If I had to pick a hobbit, I would choose Meriadoc. Eowyn and Meriadoc sacrificing themselves to protect Theoden from the king of the Nazgul had me in tears when I first read LotR: TRotK. (I understand the appeal of Samwise over Frodo, because it is a similar contrast between them as Faramir to Aragorn, where Frodo is bound by destiny and can do no other than he does, and Sam chooses to stay with Frodo after the fellowship of the ring dissolves and he has to carry Frodo, often literally, especially after the fight with Shelob in Cirith Ungol until Smeagol/Gollum meets his Mount Doom.)

I suppose Frodo had some choice. On another note, I do not know whether Tolkien had it in mind for the writer of the second half of the "Red Book" to downplay his role and exalt his friend. In such a case, in his humility, Frodo may not have given himself as much credit as he deserved and made Samwise appear all the better.

Ahh, Stephen King - the person who has kept me from getting a good night's sleep since my youth! And afraid of clowns, politicians with too much charm & too few brains, pet cemeteries.... this list goes on. Oh hell! Now I can't sleep! Thanks to the two wise Stephens!!!!

That crowded house song that played at the end of one of the episodes from The Stand gets me every time. The lyrics are hand in hand with what's that movie all about.

When I read Stephen King novels in school, it would be in the middle of the day with the lights on, doors open, windows open. Even then ... still so very _scary_

Little did Steven King know The Stand would end up being historical instead of fiction. Beware the walking dude!

I am reading 11/22/63 at this time. I know it is an older book and it is taking me some time to read. I like to soak up the story line and capture what I have read and I always have read Stephen King novels this way. I am hoping that on Mothers Day I receive If It Bleeds.
