- Moulin Rouge is an Academy Award winning 1952 British drama film directed by John Huston, produced by John and James Woolf for their Romulus Films company and released by United Artists. The film is set in Paris in the late 19th century, following artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in the city's bohemian sub-culture in and around the burlesque palace, the Moulin Rouge. The screenplay is by Huston, based on the novel by Pierre La Mure. The cinematography was by Oswald Morris. This movie was screened at Venice Film Festival (1953) where it won the Silver Lion.
The cancan is believed to have evolved from the final figure in the quadrille, which is a social dance by two couples. The exact origin of the dance is unknown but the steps may have been inspired by a popular entertainer of the 1820s, Charles Mazurier, well known for his acrobatics, including the grand écart or jump splits - both popular features of the cancan.
The dance was considered scandalous, and for a while, there were attempts to repress it.This may have been partly because in the 19th century, women wore pantalettes, which had an open crotch, meaning that a high kick could be unintentionally revealing. There is no evidence that cancan dancers wore special closed underwear, although it has been claimed that the Moulin Rouge management did not permit dancers to perform in "revealing undergarments". Occasionally people dancing the cancan were arrested but there is no record of it being banned, as some accounts claim.

some names of dancers at this time " La Goulue " ( the greedy or the glouton) , " Grille d'égout " ( sewer grate ) , " Nini pattes en l'air " ( Nini paws upwards ) , " Jane la folle " ( crazy Jane ) who was later called " the Mélinite " ( an explosive )....
@Enzo Castelbarco thank you Enzo...the site is really great....so, that story about the final credits is true but very strange...one thing about Sara Luzita , after the film , Jack Clerico , the new director of the Moulin Rouge ( after his father Joseph ) in 1952 wanted to hire her . he considered that she danced the can can as a real French....( i don't know what it means ).... Some say she refused, others claim she signed under "another name" for 3 or 5 reviews ...do you know more? i only know that Jack Clerico stayed the boss until his death in 2013 ( !!! ) and that he has always kept secret the true identities of the dancers who wished it....as to day.

I'm just imagining the muscle control and athleticism these women possessed to do this. This was incredible to watch. And they made it look SO EASY
The girls at the moulin rouge today are all professional dancers and they have said in interviews learning to do the cancan was extremely difficult because of the high speed and level of precision in their movements. They doing high kicks so close to each other and cartwheels and jump splits etc so it’s very easy to get injured if there’s a misstep

I’ve sees dozens upon dozens of cancan videos, from the professional to the amateur, from the sublime to the ridiculous, and this is by far the very best! It captures the naughty (not sleazy) nature of the dance, it’s infectious in its sheer joy, and it makes you so desperately want to be there - either as a spectator or a dancer - just to have a good time. Absolutely wonderful

I still think the Can Can in the Nicole Kidman movie tops out all versions of the Can Can.

It feels like you're watching an actual live-action painting of Toulouse Lautrec! They did such a great job with the choreography, costume design and art direction!
The best Can Can scene of all time, also a great emotionally charged movie.
The whole movie was a work of art.

That was one of the most wonderful films about the impressionists I've ever seen. It was so authentic and the dancers were just fabulous. The story was great, too. I was 12 when I
saw it and I would love to see it again. I'm 81 now. Every scene was out of a painting.
That's what I love most about the movie, the way it recreates Toulouse-Lautrec's artwork. Another film that does a good job of bringing art to life is An American in Paris.
@@dontaylor7315 Did you see Barry Lyndon? That's another one where you thought you were seen the painting that hangs in the Victoria & Albert. Lots of these kinds of shots with natural lighting used as it would have been. Didn't much like the story, but the sets & lighting and costuming was stunning.
@@sandramorey2529 Thanks for reminding me, I saw it on first run which was so long ago I'd forgotten about it. Yes, the visuals were terrific and I too wasn't very taken with the plot. Now that I'm thinking about it I seem to recall shots in David Lean's adaptation of Great Expectations that looked/felt like the illustrations in old Charles Dickens books.
@@dontaylor7315 Yes, David Lean's Great Expectations was one of my first films. I was 4 when I saw it and the scene at the grave with the little boy and the escaped "criminal" as well as Miss Haversham's spider web long table really impressed me then and continued to impress me. Thank god my folks couldn't afford baby sitters,
so I got taken to some wonderful movies as a kid. Another one that is fabulous is Barry Lyndon. Each frame looks like a painting I've seen in maybe the Victoria and Albert in London. Also, Girl with The Pearl Earring-the Dutch Masters. It's on CZcams free.

My goodness, this is some of the very finest color cinematography I’ve ever seen. As vibrant as Technicolor, yet somehow more realistic. To echo Pancake 52’s comment, it really does feel like stepping into a painting.

My mother took me to see this film as she was a huge fan of Lautrec! Thank God for Internet since I'm able to see this, again! What FUN!! :)

I went to the Moulin Rouge back in 1978, and the again in 2003. The standard of dancing and dress and physiques of the girls had gone from very good to heavenly. There have been "behind the scenes" docos on the selection of dancers ( from the world over) and the way the girls are trained and chaperoned during their stay at the MR...only the very best last several years.
Tall girls are preferred, so Australians, Latin Americans, some Americans, and of course suitable Europeans are selected. The work in preparation is hard, with no time for " recreation" It all comes together on Show Night, for the Season of performances...
Those girls have souls of steel...

In 1952, I was 11 years old and went to see this movie. It transported me. It was so familiar and I felt like I was home. I loved it

DENIAL! The can-can was meant to show nudity. It was used by courtesans of the 1880s/90s (prostitutes/ escorts) to seduce men. THIS version is sanitized by the USA censorship

Thanks to "Le Can Can", this is probably the most recognizable piece Offenbach ever wrote.
in fact , " the chahut " was the final piece of an Opéra called " Orpheus in the underworld " by Offenbach in 1858...ten years later the french took this final part to dance it by calling it " chahut can can " ....but it seems that even to day the origin of the add " can can " is not sure...the "official" version is that the expression would come from the cry of the duck " coin coin " ( in French ) because the dancers had the same hip movement as them when they run.

I think my favorite of the dance is the screams of joy; as if even the furious dance movements are not enough to expell the dancers' happiness so they make, to use a turn of phrase: "a joyful noise unto the Lord" (ironic as the can-can was thought to be "sinful", but many natural things get that label!)

Bravo, indeed. Such joy and sheer dancing wonder. What great athletes those women were in their day.
These gals are all so awesome, each with their own style, bringing the energy altogether...but the stunner in blue, seen beginning at 1:23 absolutely has it in spades, her smile oozes with the spirit of the dance, the place, and the time. The camera work seen in that short 5 seconds...focusing on her face and her pure emotion, is something I'll never forget. I'd love to learn who she and her fellow dancers' names were.

Oh-la-la, the early days of "La belle époque", the 1890's Paris...
this film really captures how the can can really was back then, even before this film was made, how infectious the excitement must have been. Reminds me of elvis or somethjng

WHAT AN INTERESTING HISTORY EXPLAINED HERE. I HAD NO IDEA WOMEN WORE PANTALETTES WITH OPEN CROTCHES IN THOSE DAYS. AND THE CAN CAN DEVISED BY A MALE, ESPECIALLY THE LEAP-SPLIT? I CAN DO ALL THESE STEPS OR USED TO, I AM THAT FLEXIBLE, BUT TO DO THE ENTIRE DANCE JUMPING FROM THIS STEP TO THAT, WOULD REQUIRE INCREDIBLE STAMINA.
This is a much more accurate representation f what the can can was. Nowadays, it's women in ruffled skirts, stockings, garters, bare arms, character shoes and no where near the energy that the ladies of this time put on. Back then, a woman exposing her drawers and petticoats was EXTREMELY scandalous. I'd love to see this dance performed as it was originally written. Fewer tuck kicks and more leg shaking and in drawers and petticoats, high neck dresses and hats. I absolutely love this scene.
Even more scandalous to think women wore split drawers when the dance first came around... :x
@@Sohalia06 Exactly! I can imagine this is where the idea that it is a "sinful" dance comes from, if all the kicking and shirt lifting meant you get quick peaks at the dancers uncovered nethers from the split in the underwear!

I just bought this film on blu-ray from England with a restored print from the BFI. It looks fabulous. Cinephiles in the United States will need to have a region-free player to watch it, though.

@@nurlindafsihotang49 something amazing about the " big easy " ( New Orleans )...in the quarter of " storyville " ( " ville " is a french word for " city " ) the french prostitutes used to have sex with " black " people ....the only place in the states...another thing , in music , the jazz style " dixieland " came from the french word " dix " = ten in english...because you have to pay 10 cents to lesson the song you want.

A Torino alla mostra dedicata a Toulouse Loutrec c'era uno spazio dedicato al ballo del Can.can e le ballerine dell'epoca erano molto simili a queste del filmato. Magari meno belle di quelle che si vedono nei filmati più recenti ma più " veraci". Complimenti a chi ha messo in rete il filmato.

Imagine something so scandalous, yet so empowering happening in the world, when women had very few rights yet they could come do this dance of strength and be adored and showered with flowers
I love the can can dance but I think it’s funny how people think that the reason it was band for a long time was because it would flash to much leg or something but in reality it was because women’s dresses we’re so big that it was hard to go the bathroom so instead of going through the trouble of trying to take off all their undergarments they just had a big hole in there bloomers and so when they would dance the can can you would see EVERYTHING lol 😂

The range of subjects John Houston filmed over the years is impressive. In this film he recreated the Moulin Rouge as Lautrec knew it--the reason for the traveling shots of the mirrored bar, bandstand, and tiered seats. In 1952 there were still people alive who remembered it as it actually was. Compare his work with that abomination that came out in 2001. It's like contrasting a painting by Rembrandt with some watercolor a pimply teenager slapped down on paper in a frenzy.
I thought the 2001 production was high entertainment like Huston's film, but it was never intended to be anything like the 1953 film. It took liberties like crazy in order to tell a fictional love story, not necessarily Lautrec's story, even though it was set in Lautrec's milieu. Baz Luhrman and John Huston couldn't have been more different as directors but I think both achieved what they set out to accomplish. I really recommend giving the latter one another try with this in mind. It's unfair to both to compare one with the other.
@@anodyne57 I've heard that argument before--how they are two different types of film and shouldn't be compared. I've tried to sit through the latest one but can't stand it long enough to give it a good airing. I think as a stand-on-its own, it sucks. I guess it's up to individual taste. More power to you if you like it. Really. I'd wager they'll be playing this one long after the second one has fallen down the memory hole.

Director John Huston really went to extra lengths in costume and choreography to capture the authenticity of the 1880s Moulin Rouge Can-Can dance. The dance itself centered around a time when women exposing their ankles in public was considered risque', hence the reason for the wild ankle swirls and knee kicks in black stockings and white pantaloons. The girls rotating like a carousel with twirling ankles is quite the scandalous spectacle!
I came to refresh myself on how this dance goes and saw your comment. To clarify, though, this dance wasn't scandalous because showing legs was risque at the time. The dance was scandalous because the 1880s most popular undergarment for women at the time was split drawers, which was convenient in the bathroom to not fuss with pulling down the garment underneath all their skirts and petticoats. Women doing this dance were most certainly flashing their viewers a glimpse of their privates.

Although Renoirs French Can Can has a greater number of dancers, Moulin Rouge is more atmosphiric

Absolutely right. Nobody would dare use their combination telephone and instantaneous photographic camera in such a situation back in good old 1880. Everyone would be right on you wondering what the blazes you were doing. Now you see them photographing this and filming that. No respect these days...
