This is true. The hobby shop I go to talks about "Uncle Night Shift" LOL. The only other few channels I watch are more figure painting of WW1 figures and suchbut Night Shift is the top one.
At 01:35 the clear yellow: You CAN replicate that. Mix a drop or two of yellow food coloring into a teaspoon of clear nail polish. You may need to experiment to get the yellow you want. But I was able to make stained glass windows for a 15mm scale church with this method. I like your channel, thanx.
I sometimes forget how tiny a 1/35 tank model is until I see it in your hands. It's incredible how much detail the paintwork has to really transform it to looking real.
Not gonna lie, early-war French tanks are actually some of my favourites, and you're doing a great job with this! I always loved the Somua, has a very nice "jelly mould" shape. Also, two suggestions for future projects: 1: A Matilda II in that famous camo pattern whose name escapes me (the stripes of tan, grey and pastel blue). 2: Something completely out of left field, a Warhammer 40,000 tank of some form. I'd be interested to see how you handled a deliberately fantastical and unrealistic subject such as, say, a Leman Russ with your painting and modelling skills.
This build has been messing with my head a little: the large cast parts really create a texture that looks like you've applied the paint too thickly. Add to that the bright camo colours and it almost looks like a bad paint job than something intentional. That said, this latest episode has really toned it down with the oils. I wonder if it would have been better to use a subtler cast texture since the parts are so large? In my opinion, the problem colour is really that duck-egg blue. It's so light that the texture really shows up
That's an interesting observation. I reworked the original texture which was in the kit following photos of the Aberdeen tank. Lots of casting imperfections and gouges in the metal, etc. The Tamiya texture is more like a coarse grain which probably makes any paint job really weird. At the end of the day, this tank is simply cursed and I'm glad it'll be a very short series :)
Greetings my Night shift buddy (I am on night shift as I'm watching this) that was a fantastic lesson from one of the true masters of this hobby, ke safe and welll mate, best regards to you and your family and friends from a Kiwi living in Australia
Thanks for these videos, Uncle Nightshift! I don't paint much in the way of military vehicles, but these techniques have really improved my Warhammer 40K models.
Nightshift, I don't even like French tanks, but since you it's one of your videos I had to watch. I always enjoy your videos. Informative, entertaining. Keep em coming. I'm waiting for you to put a book out. My Friends!
Great work as always. I just finished my somua s35 two days ago. I painted the camo with brush and weathered it with OPR. Now I’m a big fan of French armor, and I like especially their colorful camouflage.
I really enjoy your choices for models. The Syrian T55 was excellent, so is this Somua. I've been doing German and Soviet stuff for years and am now saturated. Now WW1 and Masterbox Indian Wars figures has given me new interest in the hobby, having said all that, its refreshing to break away from the Eastern Front and do something a bit off the beaten path, so French is good, you're welcome
This is a heck of a challenge and you're doing an amazing job. That brown stripe at the bottom of the tank that is clearly authentic and original looks even in the photographs like a bad model paint job. So I guess the irony is you recreated it so well it looks like.. a bad model paint job just like the real thing. It takes a lot of skill to make something look this bad because in this case bad is good.
It reminds me of the mystery machine from scooby doo, maybe once it's darkened down with the weathering it'll look amazing as usual! It does look awesome the fine line of the colours maybe to bright for French colours the brown's to red the greens to lime the French artillery grey passes think that was your tamiya sky you could probably pass for the British silver Grey on the counter scheme too!
You always remind me, I need to buy oil paints and enamel paints... Great video again! Also also, I still have some great 1/500's. I am curious what you can do with this.
Gotta step up my game as soon as this one is off the workbench! I missed my chance with the cast, I don't have it anymore, but 6 more weeks on crutches :(
6 weeks to add character to crutches 🤔 There's a challenge ... take it steady, don't be rushing about yet. Its good that you're on the mend, mah frend 😊👍
I took two screenshots to compare the before and after of the exhaust....man the difference is so subtle on a first glance, but makes all the difference when looking at it a bit longer
I never thought I'd enjoy watching some guy paint an exhaust for 20 minutes. Never had the patience or dexterity for modelling myself, but your videos are very relaxing. Say, that Logo in the "Yellow" segment, did yoi have any historic example for that?
If you don't have any models like this, you can make a some T-34 85 or something. Maybe a Panther A/F/G/D, or a Ferdinant tank destroyer or known as "Elephant". Your models are so good and cool, greetings from Bulgaria 🇧🇬 :)
Amazing job. I use aluminum kitchen foil glued with "mordant varnish" or cyanoacrylate to make the interior of a headlight. It simulates well the chrome or "metal foil". Aluminum foil can make small curves with a cotton swab on curved surfaces. Cheers
German tanks are cool and all but these weird French tanks are so much more interesting looking! I'd like to see you do some more weird ones maybe Italian or English
You really should try something with a B1 Bis or a B1 Ter, they were the nightmare of Germans despite being under-produced and rarely seen on scene, plus they have very nice shapes and interesting tracks shapes. Look up the Stonne (with 2 "n" yes) Battle… That was surreal ! The "Odieux Connard" has a very well subtitled and very funny video about it :) ( and yes, his nick is really "Odious Asshole" XD )
Would love to see you do a Char. B-1, or an AMX-13 and replace the gun and modify the turret to either the 90mm or the 105mm gun it was fitted with down the road.
Ever tried filters, pinwashes, streaks etc with water colors (aquarelle)? Cheap, water soluable, easy to correct, flat. Only needs to be “closed” with clear varnish. Great for budget modeler
After all your videos i have watched... i get the feeling you enjoy rusting your models. Have you thought of making a kit-bashed / scratch-bashed Mater from the Cars movie?
Hi Uncle N.S. Great work as always. I wanted to comment on the headlight reflector. Now, I don't know Jack about early French tanks, but on American cars from the same era, the reflectors are always silver plated, not chrome. I've restored several mid '30's Studebakers and have had to silver plate the reflectors on all of them. Not cheap! The chrome does not have the same candle power, which is why silver was the standard. Not that I've ever driven them at night! And, of course at 35th scale, what possible difference in color could be achieved? (If it is achievable, you're the man to do it) CHEERS!
This is one of those projects when your excitement goes away after a few hours. But then again, it's about building and finishing models, not just collecting them :)
Awesome video, however you can't say that french tanks didn't see much combat, the very much did, for a short period of time, but blitzkrieg was very intense xD
This channel makes me want to get back into model sets again, (the only two i have now is a mossie on which all the small details melted from a cheap bad glue and the props are blobby messes - and a g4m2 on which i accidentally broke the top turret and the blades). Perhaps models look better if you paint them ;D Question: do you have any tips or videos on airplane painting?
very good safe. I was negatively surprised by the thumbnail of the last video that I didn't watch it, I was asking how could that be a Nighshift model. but then you saved it with this one. great work. yes, please let go of the happy funky look. This tank was a beast it its day and french camos may look prettier but they arer still war paints not party colors, so Nice safe bro
I'm glad you like it more now, but it was intentional all along :) Maybe hairspray chipping wasn't the best approach and post-shading would make the model look more serious.
On painting French early war camo? Just like late war german factory schemes, it separates those that can from those that can't. Adding depth to several colors, then add wear and tear tends to mess up finishes or schemes. I wish people would take their time and look at reference pictures and good quality modeling like yours. With so much help out there it boggles the mind how modelers will have all kinds of reference yet turn their model into clown cars. Lol. Hopefully someone gets your information out and uses it.
Well, it's true that some colors make models look more serious without too much effort, panzer grey and olive drab are good examples. But then there's these funky paints that need to be toned down a LOT :)
Heres an oily duck fun fact:
The mallard duck's outer feathers are waterproof, thanks to oil that's secreted from a gland near the tail.
Quacks for that :)

Nice to see the French duck get all cleaned up with an oil wash. 😄
Oil makes it waterproof and acts as rust protection :D
@@NightShiftScaleModels nah.. these ducks are so thicc the rust will take almost falf of forever to chew it up.

There are even smaller tanks such as the Pz II or T-26 :) Pin washes are the real MVP, they can make anything look better.
Not gonna lie, early-war French tanks are actually some of my favourites, and you're doing a great job with this! I always loved the Somua, has a very nice "jelly mould" shape.

Works best if you just take the liquid inside and paint it on with a brush.
Let’s call this tank Bill. So it will be duck-Bill.
Great idea!
