Giving My Old Panzer II A New Life - Restoration, Repaint & Upgrade - Part 1

- My friends, tonight we'll take a look at that one model everyone has in their display case - old, damaged (some parts are probably missing), covered in dust (real dust, not the "modelling" dust!) and overall just something you're not really proud of, but at the same time you don't want to throw it away. So why not give it another chance and restore & repaint it?

The start result looked much better than anything I’ve made! 😂
I know lol, I'm 27 and it's nuts he did that at 17!
Outstanding and mesmerising stuff.
I just wanted to make the exact same comment.

The damaged one was better in my opinion . But your renovation was incredible but would cost a fortune
The old one looked better tho
:D
Sad I don't have an airbrush.
I'm going to need to get a couple litters of that Clean Slate.
I have about 100 armor kits and 500 miniatures that were under water from my basement flooding. (all Warhammer 40K)
I've been putting off fixing the mess because of how much of a pain in the ass stripping models and minis is.
Are you trolling yourself now? XD
Long way to go yet though.
I wonder sometimes if I should clean off old kits and totally redo it exactly the same and compare effects as I (hopefully) get better in skills.
Now everyone is going to ask, “can you please restore my model Nightshift”.
"Can you restore my miniart T-34/85? It's still in the sprues" lol
tfw you realize we're all doing a reverse restoration of sorts. We take a squeaky clean model and mess it all up.
@@NightShiftScaleModels or greatly improve a cheap kit. Your vids have been a heavy resource for my KV-2 build :)
Can you restore that beat up Tiger in Vimouter, Normandy?😀
@@NightShiftScaleModels can you pls build an fv4005? it's a British tank with a REALLY big gun lol
"doing pointless stuff so that we can sleep better",LOL, your sense of humor is one of the main reasons that I follow you...the insanely rad modelling does help though :)
I 1+ your post and saved the time from posting it again. Great line
Fantastic looking panzer II.
Absolutely no one:
Uncle Nightshift: let's make it better.
Just the sight of those unassembled metal tracks filled me with dread.
Nightshift: Panzer II is good,
Also Nightshift: But it can be better
who else remembers the 'stowagephobia'.........now it's the more the merrier!!
I wish someone did decent stowage for german tanks in 1/100 scale in the UK
@@insomniacbritgaming1632 Yeah... that´s probably not gonna happen, considering how small it would have to be.
@@radimziegler7079 PSC does 15mm/1:100 stowage already, but there isn't enough variation... oh and BF provide some stowage with their models
"...but hey, that's the beauty of modelling - doing pointless stuff so we can sleep better." - You just made my day! 😄
Amazing video, inspires me to fix my Panzer III Ausf L I screwed painting job on. Thank you! 😉👍👌
My daughter loves your channel. Always on a Friday morning its " Can we watch Uncle Nightshift now?" lol . She also keeps saying "Ma Friends".....alot. Keep up the good work.
Yeah, the Friulmodel molds are very old now and they're getting very flashy and sloppy. They've also cut costs by only using half the molds for some sets (so you see the exposed wire on one side, rather than the wire being on the inside on both sides). Big sad. But now we have R-Model and many other good options.
This makes me big mad... at least these have the wires pointing towards the hull. I'll just stick with rubber bands from now on
@@NightShiftScaleModels H E R E S Y
@@NightShiftScaleModels get masterclub. I just made their KV tracks, and absolutely brilliant. Didn't have to drill out any hole, only about three were even bent, but I had so many spares I made add on track armour and still had leftover. The resin pins, fit perfectly, and very tough against chemicals, even lacquer thinner did nothing. And quite affordable (for metal tracks)
Panzermeister36, hope school is going well for you. Missing your videos too! Both you and Night Shift get me back into modeling after 35 years. Both of you guys are very inspiring.
Since Ryefield have invested in moulds for PzIII w\interior and a PE set,be a waste not making a stug kit,or range of them.
The tracks turned out great. You don't get nearly the recognition, for the effort and attention to detail, that you deserve. Simply put, this is beautiful art!
The one dislike was from his friend who was mad that night shift removed the paint job
Panzer 2 electric Boogaloo
panzer 2, FUCK YEAH!
The type of weld on the side is just what we call a “corner weld.” Honestly very simple lol
Edit: you’ve been enlightened by a welder.
all the weld patterns he made has a name?
@@asparagus7014 Welding is a full-on science. Every weld joint and pattern has a name and a method. Some welds are always only ever done downwards so the coin pattern will have the "scale shape" pointing down. Thin metal has different sorts of welds to thicker metals. Dissimilar metals can't be welded at all and you should fashion bolts and brackets for joints. Most online welding manuals have short descriptions of techniques and diagrams of how a weld should be made so you can easily follow their methods.
If you're going to do field modifications that might have been done by unskilled welders you can just have little blobs around the joint that looks suitably dubious, this is how I intend to do some field-expedient bustle racks on my current project.
@@jameslawrie3807 wow, videos make it look easy but in reality it's actually very complicated.
@@jameslawrie3807 to join some dissimilar metals like aluminium and steel you can use triclad, which is metal and aluminium "exploded" together. I used to work on a yacht shipyard were the hull is metal and the housing is aluminium and they use triclad bars to join the 2 with welding.
Now I work as a TIG welder in a workshop which makes HVAC units for yachts and weld stainless steel pipes for said units.
Very fun work to do and every 6 months I have to do a photoweld test to renew my photoweld certificate.
@@MatthijsvanHalteren Does triclad create oxidisation problems?
I know I'm getting way off modelling here but that's fascinating, especially in a salt water environment.
When you said it was a Tamiya panzer 2 I was wondering why my kit looked a lot different with the storage and gun barrel and stuff then I realized mine was really old and I mean 1970’s old lol
Yeah this is the newer Ausf A/B/C, you have the legendary F/G ancient kit, I built that one in the past!
Same, I bought the f/g as a practice kit because it’s on Amazon for $15 usd. It was a lot of fun though!
@@NightShiftScaleModels considering this model was released in 2008, and you were 17-18 years old by then, now you should be 30-31 years old, is it correct?
@@mayakaini9472 Yeah I'll become a 30 year old boomer in a few months :(
They either are still making it, or the stocks still haven't run out, because I remember I saw one on the shelves in my local hobby store before the lockdowns. and at something like a consistent €14, it was the first 1/35 kit I've bought.
I have a LOT of models I want to restore. This is great to see! Nice work!
Edit: I’m painting a panzer grey StuG III in a few days, this makes it a lot easier, thanks!
8:42 looks like the world's weirdest edible arrangement.
Timing of this video series is perfect for me. I'm resusitating an old CMK Pz 35t I built many years ago. When I first built it I was in a hurry to finish it before entering a contest. All I had time to do was paint it, do some light dry brushing, apply decals, and give it a matt varnish. It won a First Place award so I just left it alone after that but I was never really happy with it. After many year and a few broken parts from handling, I decided to repair it and finally practice some new weathering techniques.
Thanks for your videos. I'm learning a lot of new tricks!
2:09 “modern technology from the future” 🤔
The finished Panzer grey looks amazing
Watching your videos is helping my recovery so much better. Keep em coming!
Woooow a redesign, I am so excited for the solider and the diorama
Uncle Night Shift,
Okay, my first armor kit is in my sweaty hands. The konigstiger's metal tracks have arrived (sector 35, not cheap but pre-assembled and heavy). I've flame cut some metal edges, cool effect and am ready to add texture via glue stippling ang glue putty finish. Photo etch parts are in the mail, wheels assembled and I am STOKED (not easy peasy at 70) ready to weather this kit after the paint goes on.
Since I am blessed/cursed with infinite patience, I intend to do all chipping with brush just as my Uncle has shown. Oh boy, hours of fussy detail work that I enjoy to a level that would insure me a fat file at Interpol.
Mr. Kovacs, thank you for the uploads, having a genuine tip top time here learning new techniques and cackling with a slightly unholy glee.
Janko
@nightshift your stuff is just pure joy, when I'm working at the desk I always have your vids playing in the background. Thanks for doing what you do!
Showing a restoration of a broken model really is a great idea for a video. I'm enjoying it a lot
Just a reminder nightshift! You told us to remind you about building a Panzer Grey Tiger 1 from the last time you built a tiger, also its amazing how you put so much new colour into that panzer
I was so happy to see you doing a panzer grey tank. Mind blowing how great this looks with only 2 tamiya colors.
Thanks for these videos
Love it! "Doing pointless stuff so we can sleep better." - the story of my life... Thanks, as always.
I watch your videos from day one, and in almost each of them I discover something new and interesting. This one is no different. Thanks!
Love the work you put into it, It looks so cool for real, I'm new to modeling, so I watch what you do to learn, great work man
Finally some panzer gray!
I think I have 2 or 3 of these in my stash . Such a good model to experiment with when you are first starting out . Glad to see it getting a little love .
Such Restorations are amazing!!!
Great work and highly enjoyable to watch and listen to, looking forward to the next part.
Never laughed so much that friul model track quiz laughing out loud 😂😂. Great work!!
Very cool video, love your stuff. Crammed with so many tips and massive amounts of inspiration. Fantastic 😃👍🏼
More like this please!
Nice job so far Martin. I am a fan of 'Clean Slate', it's saved my butt many a time. I watched the latest release from LPJ and it was nice to see your battle damage technique applied to the KV1, and favourable mentions of your channel. Nice to see how we still learn from each other. Looking forward to part 2. Cheers, and stay safe.
This is so satisfying!! I've postponed many new projects to fix old ones from 10+ years ago
This was a favorite build from when I was about 17 (1987) as well... though mine was the Afrika Korps version. Your detail tricks always delight! Cheers!
Finally a proper diorama! I'm very excited to see the following week videos.
I just bought a Tamiya 1/48 crocodile Churchill tank kit at my local hobby for 20 bucks nice tank project to keep me busy, soo bored when your waiting to start on a 1/8 scratch build custom modern rc tank. The "waiting" of real hobbyists struggle is DAMN REAL!! =/ #waiting also love watching your vids while i model my tanks, keeps me company sire
Okay you've officially inspired me to build my first armour kit, great work my man as always!
Another great video and a great idea reviving models
I've got some flashbacks to my recently finished mader 3. I used for the first time tamiya paints, because I saw that you are mixing all colors Individually. Well I bought 2 colors... White and panzer grey and I did something like you. And I'm feeling good now that I did everything right and it's the best model I've ever done! Thank you for your great videos they are helping me aaa lot!
I really love what you do. You have a great talent. I enjoy myself watching your videos.
You are one mad lad, sir. I have tried the tank redux routine and it never turned out. This tank looks great just as it is at the end of this video. Cheers!
After a long day of school in Sweden so am I happy to sit down and se that he released another video!
Thanks this helped a lot, I'm tryna re-do an old kit so I can add it to a diorama I'm making and this vid helped a lot
Really nice, love the stowage! I really liked the 2 lines on the side and that Shade of grey but this is still cool as heck
I think restoring your old model is really cool.
Hey night shift. Today I was looking for some interesting references for king tiger and I found one. The particular porsche king tiger is called "swedish king tiger" and has only markings of S2 I hope you will like it. Also I later found out that mark felton did a video about it.
I'm in the process of making one in 1/48, it's quite a unique vehicle as it was a very early model with a few prototype upgrades
Dude, thank you so much for introducing Clean Slate to me! This stuff is magic :)
It looks so much better than what you started with. I am looking forward to the next video.
It is my birthday today and this video coming out is the perfect gift in its own way. Thank you for posting😁
Aww man! You're spoiling us! Great to see so much in one vid! Cheer Uncle NightShift!
Great work as always! I can't get enough of german AFVs! :)
Uncle Nightshift hope you do a larger scale diorama soon. Multiple vehicles and soldiers.
Genuinely handsome so far! I liked the original, but I really love that dark German grey and the shading you already have. Just crisp and clean in a way I really enjoy.
Great as always, can't wait to see this progressing!
Finally a new project!
MARTIN!!!! You are annoyingly talented, my friend.
Building my very first tank! Using this as a guide :) Thanks.
your restoration of a built armor model is way better than my from new armor models, as an aircraft modeler I want to make some armor but haven't yet, I'm learning a lot here.
The shading is really awesome
Great work and you have taught me a lot and upped my game, just finished up a horrible DML Panzer III J, my brother started back in '94! Turned out really great. Now working on RFM Panzer III J again since I had a lot of decals left over for the 24th Pz Div. Next is the Hetzer from Tamiya with the ambush camo! Fun, fun, fun! Lots of work really. Can you do a painting tutorial for small items like the German hand grenades and the panzerfaust and bazookas, I struggle to make them look real.
Man im realy happy about yours videos my all family is watching you 👍
Amazing! Great work! Very interesting video!
This was a great video and I really like the look of the tank.
Great improvement well done.
"It looked better before" ;)
Seriously good job and as ever I impatiently await the next video
How are you doing these so amazing every time? You are skilled model maker :D
I have the same kit waiting to be built, ordered some of the same tracks from china/hong kong...never got it, gonna go to ebay and order another set, yoou have inspired me
Holy shiz that end product is insanely crisp
So cool to do a restoration project :) looking forward to the end result :)
those weld details look great!
Hi Martin, they're called " edge butt welds". Armour plate was often welded using a nickel based alloy which is why you often get rusty plates but a rust free weld.
Thank you for this. Watching some rando on youtube toy around with his models is actually really calming and has helped with my stress.
Even at this half-way stage it looks so much better than the original paint job. Can't wait for next installment.
good work. finish is stunning.
Svaka čast Martine!
Wow. Very nice video and very nice starting too.
Great paint job
Love your German Grey, the colour tone variations are very smooth👍
Love this, can't wait to see more.
Maybe I should use these techniques to revive my M48A1 Patton and Centurion Mk 5/1. I built mine 10 years ago, when I was 13, and it really shows.
The obligatory bucket because no German WWII tank model is authentic without it. Great job.
I’ve only ever seen a few original photos of German tanks carrying hanging buckets. Mind you, most photos don’t show the rear of the tank.
@@sirrathersplendid4825 Any German tank without a bucket hanging from the back was an imposter.
Totally cool, it look preaty fine!!
I first thought you would build a diorama around a disabled tank. I like the way it cleaned up, waiting to see the next video
Hi Martin, as per normal another great finish to a great looking kit, even more so since i was 'reconditioned' take care and keep safe.
Beautiful!
Really good job ❤️
The plates are welded using the Fluggaenkoecchicebolsen welding technique.
Always beautiful. I enjoy just looking.
Selling DOT3 brake fluid in other bottles. Love it. Btw restoration was done brilliantly.
serious paint. nice job
Great result
"Doing pointless stuff so we can sleep better" well said...
Amazing concept, you chance totally my expectations and I like it!
Attention fixed
Another Beautiful Job!!
I kind of like the “new” version better😁👍 Can’t wait to see the diorama base🤔
