    The best video on describing the Mass Air Flow Sensor. I have spent $2,200 on repairs of all sorts and still the car stalls, now a new mechanic wants another $400 to replace Mass Air Flow Sensor. I may be a senior lady of 70, but I did massive research on all the causes of stalling. Even brought the foundings to the mechanics who apparently ignore the air vacumn hose, electrical problem maybe and just replace parts. I filed a claim with BAR and got $1,420 back on those not necessary parts installed by two mechanics, for the car still stalls at stop lights. A 14 year Nissan Altima that is worth about $2,400 Kelly Blue Book estimate, which I bought new, seems silly to keep throwing money into it. I have not driven on a freeway since September 2, when the stalling began. As I can handle the local streets if it stalls, for it starts right away, but on a congested stop and go freeway, do not wish to take the chance. The interior is spotless and still looks great with no dents, except a scratch here and there. I think if I can clip my fingernails I can test this myself, as I change my tires, check my oil levels, water levels and change my air filters. Again, thank you for such a easy to comprehend description of the testing and replacing of an Mass Air Flow Sensor.

      Well it may be silly to throw money into it, but its to keep it running, Just know your problems it is causing and do research, And let me tell you, you get rid of the car u have and get a new one and think its okay to drop $5k the instant u sign the paper and $10k loss the first year? but its not ok to drop money on a car that needs $300-500 of work that'll last u another good amount of years? yeah just seems silly to me..

    • @eveyholmes
      @eveyholmes Před 9 lety +2

      Thank you, Pokemonguy16RS. I appreciate your feedback indeed. I am a woman of 71 on mostly SS benefits and as sometimes professional singing gig, I cannot buy a new car and if I go for a used car, it would have to be not older than a 2010...and those are not inexpensive either. I have researched beyond believe and know more about cars than 3 men that I know, I also know more about fixing computer problems more than those 3..ha,ha. I have researched and printed out all the possible causes for the car to stall as it has since Sept. 2 of this year. I have also research what a mass air flow sensor does and the different prices they ask for one online. Nissan wants $600 plus tax for that little box???? I cannot take a bus to carry my singing sound equipment or a taxi ( a taxi would charge me for loading the equipment in their vehicle), so not too much remedy and I do not also have friends to do the driving favors. That's what happens when you are independent all of your life. I did get 70% of my money back from the first mechanic, when I filed a claim with the Bureau of Automotive Repairs of California, so that is a somewhat victory, yet the problem still happens. Thank you so much.

    You literally just saved me by having this video. I had just got my 96 maxima back from a repair on some hoses connecting to my clutch, and suddenly when I got my car back it was in limp mode, it would not accelerate beyond 2500 rpms. After watching this, I went back to my car, and checked the connection. It was completely loose! So I plugged it back in and it connected firmly, now my car is running like its old good self! Thanks!

    Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Your videos are clear--the visual, audio, and explanation. Thank you for not skipping vital parts of the procedure. We are relative newbies and having these kinds of instructions is important. My Nephew was ready to let his 1996 Infinity I30t sit in a semi-functioning state after having several failed-repairs at a local repair shop. The MAF sensor was replaced by the shop with a used one, only to have the same hesitation symptoms return two weeks later. After watching your video, we did the tests you prescribed, including checking and cleaning the two ground points, which were covered with a pile of greasy dirt, which looked like grease-covered sawdust. The voltage tests turned out good. After shooting the Film with the MAF cleaner (6 or 7, three-second bursts), I accidentally rubbed the Film with my nitrile gloves, only to find that the apparently black-colored Film (much like a fine screen on a flour sifter) was actually, a silver/aluminum color (much like the flour sifter), so I used the gloves like erasers to rub off the dirt. If I had had a pencil with eraser at one end, I would have used it to clean the inside of the Film. I finished by shooting cleaner through both sides including the two small sensors, around three more times each. I also used the electric/electronics cleaner on the power/sensor leads that we tested. Now, besides the lack of hesitation and idle problems when warm, my nephew reports that the radio also seems to be functioning much better. Is the improved radio function related to cleaning the grounds? Is the Film a "Hot-Film"? Whole operation took about 50min in the sun with temps in the upper 90's. If we did this again, It would probably be a 25min job. Tools: two small pry-bars (8in&11in), tapered/needle nose pliers, 10mm deep-well with 3/8in drive and roughly 6in extension, and 10mm shallow socket with 1/4in drive and 4in extension, slotted screw-driver, t-pin (out of paper-clips at Wally world), MAF cleaner as shown in video, electrical/electronics cleaner of the same brand, cheapo multi-tester/meter, and nitrile gloves. I got the two pry-bars, gloves and t-pin from Wally world and the cleaners from Advanced Auto Parts. Had the other tools.
    We will be using more your videos. The spark-plugs are next,.

    Very helpful vid. My 95 Maxima was bucking and cutting out at low speeds. Showed Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 12 on the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL), which equates to P0100 using the Consult tool that I don't have. Fortunately, between this vid and the factory service manual that I bought when the car was new, it was easy to diagnose. Wiring and harness readings from this vid were good, so I replaced the mass air flow sensor with a Cardone reman and erased the DTC memory and MIL. The MAFS was not cheap (about $200), but that's the way it goes. Car runs fine now. So far, so good, so thanks again for this great video.

    My buddy has a F 350 that randomly, when he hits the gas, wont respond and stays at idle. He has this happen where he gets no response from gas pedal but it just idles. Then he restarts the car a few times and it will go away. Does this sound like the mass air flow sensor could be the culprit? Also I was thinking the newer drive-by wire pedal might have a malfunction in reading the senor position. But I've also heard someone who had a bad alternator that put out too low voltage and ended up causing a faulty mass air flow sensor so they both needed replacing. Any ideas? So far the cpu is throwing no codes...
    Thanks for the videos, they're so awesome.

    • @CarsNToys
      @CarsNToys  Před 10 lety

      John Smith Hey John. It sure could be the MAF sensor. You may want to check if the vehicle has any trouble codes but a faulty MAF sensor could inhibit the vehicle from accelerating. (On my Maxima, the limit is 2400 RPMs) Also check for vacuum leaks.

    hello, I have a 97 Altima, and it idles rough then it turns off, but if I disconnect the MAF sensor it runs fine and does not turn off at idle. I did your test, it passed the first one, then I did the second part of the test by connecting the paper clip into the plug of the MAF as the car was running and it gave me a reading with higher voltage than norm. (about 15.3v) Yes it has check engine light on. Not sure of the code. I believe it was PO340 something with the distributor which I already replaced. Any idea? Also I bought one new MAF and a used one and both gave me same reading.

    • @CarsNToys
      @CarsNToys  Před 9 lety

      jomar rodriguez Okay. When you tested the MAFS with the paper clip, which terminal are you testing? If you disconnect the harness connector facing up (the little notch that you press down to remove the sensor is facing up) you want to test terminal 1 which is the terminal all the way to the right. (Should be all the way to the left when connected.)

    • @CarsNToys
      @CarsNToys  Před 9 lety

      jomar rodriguez 15v is way off the charts. The voltage for your car at idle is between 1-2 volts. A high voltage will cause your engine light to illuminate for code p0100. Other symptoms of a bad MAF sensor is hard starting/restarting and detonation. On some vehicles you can't go above 2500 rpms because the vehicle enters a fail safe mode. If you performed the test correctly sounds to me the sensor is no longer working. I'd check first though what engine codes the car has.

    Hello, I have 1997 Nissan maxima, and when try to start to my car it would die immediately. This usually happens after a day or two of not driving it. In order to start the car successfully, I would have to step on the gap pedal as I start it. This has been happening for almost 2 years and my check engine light has not lighten up ever. Within the last month, sometime when I start the car, the rpm will jump between 500-1500 rpm back and forth for like a minute. I don't know if this is related, but would you think this is mass air flow sensor causing my car to not start normally

    • @CarsNToys
      @CarsNToys  Před 10 lety +1

      Ethan Lau If the MAF sensor is bad, you'll be unable to get the car above 2400 RPMs. (The car would run in fail safe mode.) It sounds to me you have a different issue. Have you checked the spark plugs? Also check the PCV valve. I have a video for both of these issues and both are performed on a '97 Maxima. The other thing to check is if the car is running on all six cylinders. You can do this by disconnecting the coil pack for each cylinder (one at a time as the car is running) and see if there's any change. If there isn't then you know that cylinder isn't firing. If you're not sure what a coil pack is just watch my Maxima spark plug replacement video.

    I have a 97 Nissan Maxima and when I get it up over 2rpms it just jumps and sputters. Then when I take my foot off the gas it shuts off. I did replace the Air filter and cleaned the MAF sensor. Worked for 2 days then it went right back acting crazy in the same manner. While I was at the parts store I had them run the tester on it and it came up with these 4 codes P1447, P0100, P0130 and P0325. All these I believe deal with Air flow. I did (before I found your video) go ahead and replace my MAF sensor. So now of course this did not work either. So now I have to do the other steps that you talk about in your video. But I have a question and this may be dumb but here goes, Does the electric that goes to the MAF sensor have a fuse that could be busted? Just thought !!!!!!!

    • @CarsNToys
      @CarsNToys  Před 9 lety

      Cheryl Williams Sounds like classic MAF sensor issues. If there's a problem with the MAF sensor, the computer cuts fuel at 2400 RPMs. Out of all these codes I'd be most concerned with p0100 - MAF sensor. Run the tests I show in the video and let me know if you need additional help. (The sensor doesn't have a fuse. It runs off a large relay)

    • @nissanneal
      @nissanneal Před 5 lety

      STOP. STOP. STOP!!!!!!!!!'!!!!!! DO NOT REPLACE ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!! I am a Nissan service technician and can help with these problems.
      When you have random multiple codes and poor running, the problem is most likely a broken wiring harness at the right strut tower. The engine mounts in these cars are allowed to get soft, then the engine rocks back and forth too much.
      There is a technicial service bulletin about this.
      Basically the main engine harness needs to be opened up behind the right strut tower and the harness repaired.
      Then replace the engine mounts to eleminate the excessive engine movement.

      Sabrina Hodge Hi Sabrina. Can you be a little more specific? Are you thinking along the lines of what controls the a/c compressor to turn on and off?

    • @mrsbreezylynn
      @mrsbreezylynn Před 10 lety

      CarsNToys some times it will blow cold and most of the time it is hot. We have replaced the relay switch. And also the valce on top of the compressor. Before we replaced the relay the compressor did cycle off and on but now that issue is fixed. Now its the mystery of why it isn't cooling. We put freon in it. And checked it and it still says full.

    • @CarsNToys
      @CarsNToys  Před 10 lety

      Have you checked the a/c condenser? I've seen them clog up with leaves which inhibits airflow; which in turn inhibits cooling.

    Hi I have a 1999 Nissan Altima that has idling problems. It turns when I stop at a red light. it could be the idling air valve control or the mass air flow sensor. I took it to my mechanic and he gave a little overpriced amount for the repair. I don't know if you can help me I just want to figure out if I could just clean the sensors myself rather than buying them new.

    • @CarsNToys
      @CarsNToys  Před 10 lety

      Jorge Quiroga Is the check engine light on? If not, check for vacuum leaks. That may be the source.

    • @jaqf94
      @jaqf94 Před 10 lety

      CarsNToys Yes, it turned on recently. Apparently the knock sensor is bad too but I don't think that could be the problem. I believe the main problems may come from either the idling air valve control or mass air flow sensor. I will check the hoses for vacuum leaks anyway.

      Jorge Quiroga Ok. So the only trouble code you have is P0325?

      Skits Visit your local auto part store. They most likely sell a pack of connectors that will match up to the one you need. Just solder on the new connector. (Take a look at my aftermarket radio video. In that video I show what I mean by soldering wires and using heat shrink tubing.)

    MAF sensor is in good condition.
    so what else could be the problem

    •  Před 7 lety +1

      I have the same code with my altima 2011, already cleaned the air filter and MAF sensor.
      Next thing i will d o, but i don't know when, i will clean the throttle body. It may be dirty and wont allow enough air to get in i guess.
      If you get any solution please tell me!

      Humberto García I had the same issue, my sensor was good so I had a mechanic clean the throttle body and didn’t have an issue for another 30-50,000 miles. But now with 155k miles my car will crank but just won’t turn over. Can’t start it so I haven’t had the chance to take it to my mechanic.

      +Wimbo Mahadi in California near San Pedro there is a junk yard for nissan parts only, there are plenty of these nissan or specific car type junk yards or you can go to 'pick a part' all in LA COUNTY. I paid $75 used part $7 tax, you might be able to order it from them and have them mail it to you.

      +Wimbo Mahadi they included the seals and silver circular closure also. it was the cheapest of the 4 locations we could find others started for used part $125 and the dealer was ridiculously expensive

    Hello friend, i have a question where did you buy those diagrams with the specifications how to test components like MAF Sensor, I see that even the pin on the connector is numbered for that specific car, I just bought one at AutoZone store it's called Haynes it's not complete just general information also different types of engine not good for me, I need a book with more in depth information, can you provide me a link where to buy it, thanks in advance, by the way I liked your video how to test a maf sensor my has 5 pins but i do not know which pin it's ground, signal or positive. Give some info about the book if you can please thanks again. My is a 2001 hyundai santa fe GL 2.4 Engine manual transmission. My car clicks when I turn the ignition switch then I tried again and wants to crank but it does not crank, then I tried one more time and it moves the engine slow or the engine rotates slow, any ideas what could be my problem I does not start at all.

      Gotcha. Some vehicles go in fail safe mode when there's a problem with the MAF sensor. For example, the car won't rev above 2500 RPMs. You can also buy a cleaner for the MAF sensor.
