History of Afro-Bedouins in the Holy Land

  • HOLY LAND UNCOVERED | We all know the history of African Americans, their struggle for equality, and their dark chapter of slavery in the United States. But only few know that slavery was also common in other places, including among sectors in the Holy Land, specifically the Bedouin community. Our Shelby Weiner has the story.
    Story:
When asked to explain the background of black Bedouins, black Bedouin community member Elham Alkamalat said she feels ‘sad as a black Bedouin’ because she feels ‘there are no roots’ for her and her community.
‘I know only two generations back of my family,’ she said. ‘The story says that all Bedouins who live in the Negev are Arab and Muslims, and they kidnapped children from Africa and brought them to the Negev desert to be slaves for community leaders - Bedouin community leaders.’
While the exact origin of Afro-Bedouins is unknown, their ancestors were likely sold from East Africa during the 19th and early 20th century.
Under the British Mandate, slavery was made illegal. However, the practice was unregulated in the Negev’s Bedouin communities, continuing into the 1950’s and formally ending only after the State of Israel was born.
During the 1970’s, the Israeli government began relocating Bedouin tribes to official settlements. Many Afro-Bedouins saw this as an opportunity to become landowners and move up in society. Today, around 60 percent of Israel’s Afro-Bedouin live in Rahat - the largest Bedouin municipality in Israel.
However, they are still marginalized and segregated from the rest of Rahat’s Bedouin community.
‘The white side of the Tarabeen tribe refuse that the black side of the Tarabeen live among them,’ Alkamalat explained. There are ‘two neighborhoods - one next to the other. One side is black and the other side is white, and there is a barrier between them.’
A mother of four, Elham Al-Kamalat became a tour guide to show the plight of her community. She walks through Il Maydan, an all-black neighborhood where people live among debris and running sewage.
Even though slavery has been illegal for decades, Afro-Bedouins are still called ‘Abed,’ a derogatory Arabic word which means both slave and black.
But change is on the horizon, as for the first time an Afro-Bedouin was elected into the municipal government.
‘It's easy to blame others for your situation but we decided to take responsibility for ourselves. We wanted to make a change from the ground up, and we decided to cooperate with the local government. It was important for us to break tribalism in Rahat and give everyone a feeling of belonging,’ Majed Abu Blal, City Council member and co-Founder “Step Forward” NGO said.
Before being elected to city council, Blal made it his life’s work to improve the status of woman and children in Rahat. His NGO, ‘Step Forward,’ increased the rate of female high school matriculation from 70 to 99 percent.
‘I must instill in the youth a sense of self-respect, motivation and ability,’ he said. ‘I want my daughter to know that like me, she can run for mayor. I want the Afro-Bedouin community to be in a position of equality, and that one day, this community will break out and be leaders.’
While one push for equality is embracing modernity, there is another, more traditional, force working towards the future.
‘This is the only tent among the homes and apartments in Rahat. I preserve the culture, mentality and laws of Bedouin life. It's very important - otherwise we'll be lost. I'm also the head of an association that promotes coexistence. We host guests and explain about our life,’ Sheikh Hassan, black Bedouin community member explains.
‘Today everything is better, but it wasn't so long ago we were the deprived among the deprived,’ Hassan continued.
Hassan lives with his four wives and twenty children. He aims to both preserve Bedouin customs and help the advancement on the Afro-Bedouin community.
As society is beginning to slowly shift, Afro-Bedouin leaders from all walks of life are looking to the future with optimism in their hearts and minds.

Here some Facts about that story:
      * It starts in the late 2000's, means that no Black Jew from the Great Aliyahs from Ethiopia between 1970's-1990's got "sterilized".
      * Israel has been using Depo Provera on White Jews too.
      * Only the married women ones received injection.
      * Most of women received these injections in Ethiopia & not in Israel.
      * Many of the injections were administered by non-Israelis.
      * Depo-Provera affective only for 3 months.
      * Black Ethiopian Jew immigrants population in Israel is in growth.
There are more facts but these are enough to prove all these Israel didn't "Forced Black Africans Sterilizinon" & that "Jews are racist" as Haters like to show.
Israel do admitte that some clinic personnel applied inappropriate pressure on the Ethiopian women or failed to take the time to inform them adequately about Depo Provera. If so, this is a case of poor medical care, not a racist plan to Sterilization black women. Plus, Remember, most of them immigrants didn't speak Hebrew or English, so of course there will be some cases of misunderstandings 🤷🏾‍♂️
The funny thing is that while Israel has NEVER practiced involuntary sterilization, many other countries did include those who criticize us:
      China 🇨🇳
      Canada 🇨🇦
      Peru 🇵🇪
      Bangladesh 🇧🇩
      USA 🇺🇸
      Germany 🇩🇪

That whole area was black like us in ancient times. Our family leaving Egypt came there 3600 years ago. There was no Suez Canal to separate the land from Africa, not until the time of the American Slave Emancipation arrived. Then they separated Israel from Africa physically with the canal. That separation via man-made canal creates an illusion that the land isn’t black originally.

El-Jawhari attributed this verse to El-Lahabi and he is El-Fadl ibn El-Abbas ibn ‘Utba ibn Abi Lahab and he meant by green the brownness (darkness) of his complexion and he meant by that the purity of his genealogy and that he was an unmixed Arab because the Arabs describe their color as black and they describe the color of the non-Arabs as red. Like the hadith says, ‘I was sent to the red and the black. And this is exactly what Miskeen El-Darimi meant when he said: ‘I am Miskeen, for those who know me. My color is brown (dark), the color of the Arabs’”.
Ibn Mandhor says in his book Lisan El-Arab:
والعرب إِذا قالوا: فلان أَبـيض وفلانة بـيضاء فمعناه الكرم فـي الأَخلاق لا لون الـخـلقة، وإِذا قالوا: فلان أَحمر وفلانة حمراء عنوا بـياض اللون؛

It is known that verily it is not said to the Zanj and to the People of Habasha and the people of Nuba that they are white, nor are they red( pale white) and there is not a name for them except the blacks. And we have learned that verily Allah azzawajal sent the Prophet to all of mankind. And to the Arabs and non Arabs , all of them. And if he said ‘I was sent to the red and the black ‘We don’t have with us red or white he was sent to us . We only have in our time the the saying of the black. And mankind does not come outside of these two names (The Red and The Black) and if the Arabs are from the red then they have entered in the numbers of the people of Rome, the slaves and the people of Faaris and Khorasaan. And if they were from the blacks they have derived for them a name from our names. It is only said to them that they are Adam and brown black so they have entered the same (category) with us in our beauty like how the Arab refer to females and males, masculine (as a group). And if the Prophet, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him knew the Zanj and the people of Habasha and the people of Nuba were not red( pale white) or white and that they are black. Allah the all mighty sent (the Prophet may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) to the black and the red. Then without a doubt he made us and the Arabs the same. And we can be the jet blacks without them. And if the name black falls upon us then we are pure blacks and the Arabs purely resemble us . Therefore we are the first on the list in this call to Islam.

Black people aren’t the original. We all come from Adam and Eve(Hawa) Islam is The true religion with undeniable proof and evidence. We Muslims believe in Jesus but not as God and we don’t believe God has a son. Jesus peace be upon him is a prophet and Messenger Of Allah (God) and he is the messiah. He wasn’t killed as Allah saved him before they could get to him. There is also scientific and historical miracles mentioned in the Quran such as the formation of the human embryo as well as the creation of honey in bees. There are Islamic prophecies that came true and will come true and I recommend everyone to try and learn about them. I myself know of people who were ill and suffering with issues (including black magic) and got cured miraculously when the Quran was recited over them. I invite everyone to learn about Islam.

@Ozell Israelite Why are you people wants everything to be black so bad and stuck with you colorism?! Arabs are West Asian native people who share common links with the rest of Eurasian populations. Of course we can get darker due to our harsh weather but our features, phenotype and bone structure is unique and nothing compared to Africans for example or South Indians or native Australians and I'm talking about native Arabs of the Arabian peninsula. Prophet Mohammed PBUH is of one of the purest Arab lineage and Arabs and Muslims can easily trace his ancestry all to known Arab tribes from both sides for 600 years from his birth and we know for sure that he is a light-skinned Arab with typical Arabian features that can be found among Arab tribes in modern day Saudi Arabia. We Arabs color ranging from olive to dark olive skin tones and we are easily get tanned under the sun to the point we can reach to deep brown color but again nothing compared to your skin color. Another factor that some Arabs can have darker skin is due to the fact that we involved with one of the biggest and longest slave trade of Eastern Africans and ancient Arab men in pre-Islamic Arabia are known for having black female maids and it was the norm that their masters can have sex with them but an Arab women are forbidden to marry African male slaves, in fact the practice of having a male slave in a house with an Arab woman is after castration. Even though that they didn't want to have children with them but if the had kids they'll immediately disown them and one of the most famous historical Arab legend was ('Antarah bin Shaddad) who was son of an Arab tribesman from his slave maid one and after 'Antarah born and was black like his mom he immediately disowned him but the rest of marvelous story of 'Antarah after he grew up you can read it for yourself in your free time. So please don't act smart and argue with an Arab who are better than you in his own long standing history from thousands of years and you better focus on searching in your recent lost ancestry and history from West Africa after the Europeans brought your ancestors via the trans-Atlantic slave trade 🙂

The noble Goths [the German rulers of Spain to whom Roderick belonged] were broken in an hour, quicker than tongue can tell. Oh luckless Spain! 3. The Pure Arabs and the East Africans are indeed kith and kin. Bertram Thomas, historian and former Prime Minister of Muscat and Oman, reported in his work ‘The Arabs’: “The original inhabitants of Arabia…were not the familiar Arabs of our time but a very much darker people. A proto-negroid belt of mankind stretched across the ancient world from Africa to Malaya. This belt…(gave) rise to the Hamitic peoples of Africa, to the Dravidian peoples of India, and to an intermediate dark people inhabiting the Arabian peninsula. In the course of time two big migrations of fair-skinned peoples came from the north…to break through and transform the dark belt of man beyond India (and) to drive a wedge between India and Africa…The more virile invaders overcame the dark-skinned peoples, absorbing most of them, driving others southwards…The cultural condition of the newcomers is unknown. It is unlikely that they were more than wild hordes of adventurous hunters.”

      .
      7. “Mr. Baldwin draws a marked distinction between the modern Mahomedan Semitic population of Arabia and their great Cushite, Hamite, or Ethiopian predecessors. The Muslim tradition specifically allows slavery. In fact slaves and the taking of slaves make up an important part of the sira about Muhammad's life; slaves were a form of booty and almost always the most valuable part, so the taking of slaves formed a huge part of the impetus behind the prophet's military campaigns. As is extremely clear from the rest of the tradition, female slaves taken by Muslim mujaahideen must submit sexually to their new masters, and sex with them is specifically permitted, as is the beating of disobedient slaves. The two legitimate sources of slaves agreed upon by the Ulama were captives taken in war, and children born to slaves (unless the slave-owner was the father). Nevertheless, the tradition also makes the freeing of slaves a virtue to be rewarded by Allah, but no scholar in the classical period ever extrapolated this to a general abolitionist sentiment, as the tradition is far too clear on the fact that Muhammad took many, many slaves and was actually very supportive of the institution. Mainly due to pressure from European colonial powers, slavery was eventually made illegal throughout the Muslim world in the 19th and 20th centuries, and is now considered forbidden in the modern context by most scholars, though a minority, such as Saudi Sheikh Saleh Al-Fawzan, argue that slavery remains Islamically legitimate.

You’re going far. The Arabs themselves were a brown, dark brown, and black skinned people with kinky hair…..they, by and large, fit the description of what we would call black people in this day and age.
After the death of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh), his companions went to Egypt to conquer it. An delegation was sent to the ruler of Egypt, who was merely a Roman installment, in order to get him to surrender and avoid war. Leading this delegation was a man by the name of Ubadah Ibn As-Saamit, a pure Arab from the tribe of Khazraj. When he arrived at the ruler’s palace and stepped forth to address him, the ruler said “get this black person away from and put forth somebody else to speak with me. Verily I find his blackness to be frightening”…….not only was Ubadah very dark, but he was also estimated to be around 7 feet and muscular. Immediately his men responded on his behalf saying he is their leader and the best from among them in terms of knowledge and that their commander placed him in charge of them etc. The ruler then said, “speak oh black one, but, do so softly as to not scare me”……Ubadah responds in saying his famous words
“I heard what you said about my complexion, but you should know, I have left at camp 1000 men ALL OF THEM AS BLACK AS, AND EVEN BLACKER THAN ME, if you were to see them you would find them to be even more frightening than me”
So we shouldn’t be asking about “Africans”….we should be asking about these pure Arabs who were so black that a man in Egypt who sees “tanned” and “brown” skin people everyday found to be frightening.
The Arabs of the 7th century and before are what we would describe as black people 🤷🏾‍♂️
