  • In the early 80's, Jordan and Unesco expelled the humble people of the B'doul tribe from the ancient city of Petra to declare it as a world heritage site.
While hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world flock to the site, the local community seeks to rebuild their life on the tiny territory allocated for them.
This documentary film is a journey to the heart of the B'doul tribe of Petra. It is also an approach intended to be lucid about the inscription to the world heritage of one the most visited and sought-after destinations on earth.
Documentary: Petra: The Hidden Side of World Heritage
    Directed by: Marie-Claire Thouault

As a tourist, I'd love to see & interact with the Bedouin's & learn about their culture, their craft, hear their stories (hear them sing!) while they live on their land; more so than seeing uninhabited heritage sites themselves - I can't believe this is not done; I'd also be keen to see tourism regulated & happy to wait till it's my turn. Great doco.

I completely agree. And if the price to see it must be increased in order to give the Bedul people what they so rightfully deserve, and to protect the site, then so be it!
I am just so HORRIFIED by the part where they said that the small road used only by the locals will be built into a highway for the hundreds of tourist buses ! ! !
I would give anything to have seen Petra (and many other places) may decades ago, before they got wrecked by tourism. The idea of that highway, and the sight of the refrigeration unit with the big sign advertising Coke and Pepsi, made me realize that it's already too late for me to see Petra.

I absolutely don't understand it entirely. We go to great lengths to preserve historical sites, but we seem to ignore the fact that we're displacing tribes without providing them suitable alternatives and support for survival. Petra is undeniably a remarkable historical site, but wouldn't it be even more appealing if the original inhabitants, who constructed these incredible structures, were allowed to reside there as they did in the past? Instead, they are driven out while others profit from the tourism industry without compensating the very people responsible for these architectural marvels. It's truly a load of nonsense. Politics, what a filthy game they play.

I started watching this because I was on "Auto Play", and it was on next. I am so glad that it was! These people and this place, Petra is a part of them, and they are magnificent! We should all aspire to such lofty thought and depth of soul. I am inspired to do something about their plight. When I think of the land that I now live on, (I live about 2 miles from the American River and about 20 or so miles from Sacramento, the Capitol of California), I know that not so long ago, there was a people that had lived on it for many, many hundreds of years. They were "born here" and I feel they would have wished to also die here in this land. I wasn't there for the massacres and the broken treaties, some of which the American government is still breaking. But I am here for this, and I know this is no big thing, but.....
I wish that I could find the address of the man that sat there with the Sheikh and his family. Sat by the fire and shared a meal with them all. Ate his food, drank his tea, and apparently either broke his word later or lied to the Sheikh's face when he promised him land and homes, and land, even a specified amount he told him, land for his and his Wife's children. Because if I did have his address, I would start a letter writing campaign.... I'm wondering, would you join me?

I am sorry, but you have it backwards. these people lived in these caves for a few hundred years… these caves have been around for a few thousand years. these people do not understand the importance of architecturally cherished monuments. They take care of their goats, sheep and lives. They do not at all care about the historical monuments into which they were born.

    • @cattymajiv

@@JunoDiovonaDemihof No. YOU have it backwards. In fact the people interviewed said the exact opposite. Did you even watch it? If so, you must have had the volume off.
The values of respect that the indigenous peoples have for their history and ancestors means that they cherish very highly the things that were built by them. These peoples' ancestors built Petra. It and the land it sits on are theirs. Like nearly all indigenous peoples they have very little destructive impact on the land and the site. What little they do have is a direct result of the necessity to use modern methods and products that has been forced on them by the tourism.
It's the impact of those tourists that is destructive. They are mostly Americans and Americanized Europeans, with the mentality that everything is there for their convenience, to use and destroy as they feel.
Obviously the Jordanian govt cares about nothing but the money that tourism brings, and like govts worldwide they don't care about indigenous peoples because their numbers are small. The idea of building a high way over the Bedul's traditional road to bring in hundreds of tourist buses is horrific! The impact of those buses and the people they bring will be many times worse than the damage that has already been done.
I wish so much that I had gone to see it when I first learned of it, in the 1980s. I have no longer got any desire to visit yet another Americanized tourist trap.
The environmental impact of the Bedul on Petra has been near zero, despite the fact that they have been there for thousands of years. This is typical of all native peoples, because their very basic lifestyle and use of nearly entirely biodegradable products leaves no residue.
Where on earth did you get that horrible bigotted attitude toward the Bedul people? Do you hate all indigenous peoples, or is it only Arabs? Which ever it is, you need to learn more about people. I'll bet you have never even been there, yet you deign to insult the entire group of them, based on no evidence at all. If I were to do the same, based on only your words, I would say that you are a rural Alabama bigot who got everything they have on the backs of a bunch of slaves. The conclusion I jumped to, based on your statement, is no more baseless than your attack on the Bedul is. Why did you bother watching this if you refuse to hear what they are saying?

It is a bit ridiculous to contend that the Bedouins were in the region from times long ago when they did not live there until much later. Who knows who was there in very ancient times, but we do know of the Moabites. They were eventually assimilated into other Semitic groups. Later came the Nabateans, who built the city as we can see it now or at least to some extent. They eventually were over run by other peoples. We could say that the Bedouins who came from Arabia filled up the space when it seemed that none wanted it. Now Jordan (which itself is a totally made up country - the name is old, but that is about it) think they own it much like Turkey (another made up country) thinks it owns the Greek temples in Asia Minor. The UN being a bunch of useless highly paid busy buddies have to get involved as if they alone could save the world and of course, they make a mess of things. What can one expect from such an organization now totally corrupted with selfish woke ideology. I feel sorry for the Bedouins, but in the modern world you need titles or at least leases. This is the sad reality of modern life.

All people who use the word "woke" are fanatics. They are crazy right wingers and Trumpists who want to steal democracy from the rest of us. They are very racist too.

I've been to Petra twice and found Beduins there and spoke with some of them. I found Petra gained from having inhabitants on site.
