    I’ve never seen a hackle trimmed like that to form a herl. I have to try that. We can learn so much from these old flies. Thank you so much.

    Beautifully tied as usual Mr McPhail. I used to know a guy from Ayrshire many years ago that fished the Clyde with a natural fly and a cork float and he called it a "Stab fly". Looks very like that. Love the way you've done the body with the furnace hackle. Great idea and fantastic effect. Thanks for the tips 🎣👏👍

    Hi Davie, I was shown how too catch and fish the natural Stab Fly using an oak apple as a float. The man who showed me called it the upside down fly, we fished it on the Lugar Water and the River Ayr to great effect. My hands are too shaky nowadays to catch the natural so will have to tie up a few of these wee beauties,. Thanks again for another great video. Jimf

    Learned yet one more nice method, too (the hackle feather cut and wrap). It was useful to watch your methods arranging the wing material, also. I tend to prod and poke without really knowing what I'm about.

    A "Stab flee."
    Many years ago an old Clyde fisher promised me he would show me how to fish the natural stab flee, but only when I was older. He said it caught everything in a pool and I had to learn self restraint beforehand.

    • @davidfraser4083
      @davidfraser4083 Před 3 lety +1

      To catch them is easy. Have a match box or similar container , walk the fence lines and you can pick the flies of the posts. Put them in your container. Heres the secret getting them out, blow smoke gently into the container and keep the lid on. The flies go sleepy and you can get one out. I used to fish with size 18 hooks on 2lbs nylon and cast very gently. Alternatively you could buy hook clips for live bait also casting gently. Alas I dont smoke anymore

      Hi James,
      Here in Scotland they are better known as a stab fly and we see them in the warm summer days on fence stabs hence it's name, in the thumbnail photo you will see an artists view of the real fly which is a perfect copy..It is collected by many anglers and fished using a small cork float and can catch many of the best fish in the pool..I'm glad you enjoy the videos and thank you for the words..

    I used to have so much bother with these wings. Perseverance pays off because one day you just get it and then it seems pretty straightforward. Dont get me wrong, I've still whip finished a few duffers in my time, but I'm the only one fishing them so it's all good 🤣

      Don't worry. Davie McPhail is the only one on all web vids fly tyers who can tie wings in that perfection. So they use some synthetics or hair to get some wings. One day you will get an enjoyable result and will have a lot of satisfaction. My self Im on the same way.

    Is the downhill fly the same as downlooker snipe fly (Rhagio scolopaceus)?
    If so, they often swarm heavily up here in Northern Norway. Making even the seatrout in the rivers go crazy. I've just used a Wickham's Fancy wet fly fished dry with great success, this was also how I fooled a 3,1 kilo brownie. Gonna try this pattern for sure. Cheers!
