  • Woodworking bandsaw jig for template cutting and pattern work. This DIY shop made jig will give you accurate and consistent results when bandsawing parts to match a template. With the workpiece just 1/16” oversize, you can easily pattern rout the part at the router table to complete part. Shown on a Laguna 1412 bandsaw, but this jig can be modified for use on many woodworking bandsaws.

Thumbs up to Laguna for putting out a video on how to make a useful, generic jig that people can whip together with scraps. There's a time and a place to drop cash on a factory made jig but this is not one of them. This concept is so simple and works great with a Kreg fence. If you have a smooth fence, just give the vertical piece enough height to give yourself a wide range of clamping heights.

What router bit was that? I've never seen such a huge fish trim bit and it would be perfect for guitar neck templates. Great video btw, making this over the weekend. Thanks!

I made two of these following this video. My band saw is only a 10” model so I had to make the jig a little shorter. I measured from the furthest distance I could mount it to my fence to make it as long as possible. I’ve used them over the past two days. My first observation is obvious-that there’s a trade off between the width of the opening and the ability to follow steeper curves. Using a 1/4” blade, I wanted to follow a lot of curves in my templates. However, given my 10” bandsaw, there’s a limit to how much you can turn the stock because I can come into to contact with the fence and can’t continue a curve. So I have to remove the fence and freehand certain curves. Also, with an opening just slightly larger than the 1/4” blade, because I’m trying to maximize the ability to follow curves, it’s impossible to avoid the blade touching the front inside of the opening. It’s fine for awhile but eventually it breaks off. I made “replacement openings” out of 1/4” mdf and glued them on top of the Formica and then power sanded down the other side so the template doesn’t get too thick. Then, the process repeats…except for when I dropped the jig and broke one of the opening sides off. 😢 If one were to want to improve on the design, I would try to incorporate replaceable “tips” made out of something more durable like hard plastic that could easily be changed. When I first made these, they were beautiful. I used white Formica but they looked nice. Now, they don’t look so good, but they work… with some issues. 😢

Solution is to just make an L-shaped base the same width as the jig and then clamp the horizontal foot onto your table. Vertical piece to suit your bandsaw size for max and min desired mounting heights. Could have vertical slots for infinite height adjustment. The same jig could be fence mounted or table mounted with that kind of an adapter.

I love how you even painted it red so it looks like the rip off woodpeckers tool they just released

Not sure if you are saying that Woodpeckers ripped this tool ideal off or if Laguna Tools ripped off Woodpeckers ideal?
This follower style design has been around for a very long time and also Featured on Page 26 of Fine Wood Working (FWW)Magazine No. 271 December 2018 and prior to that in FWW No.173 Also featured in Five Tips for Better Bandsawing by Michael Fortune. There are numerous Template -guided cutting pattern/template cutting jigs for the bandsaw. Bolt on follower for old PM/Delta/PC ETC, A follower like this one in this video. Mated fence setup where matching concave half is used as a sled to slide along the template with the blade trapped by the convex half / Angled ARCs. I made the follower style shown in video when I was in High School Wood Shop as a shop jig for the entire class as a Student because I wanted a small table that was not a hexagon and the teacher showed me how to do it and then made me do it and I had to share the jig with the class. That was in 1987. Difference it did not mount to the Fence as extruded aluminum was not a thing then it mounted to the table top of the bandsaw with clamps.
But yes it is a nice touch that Red veneer / laminate was used maybe to rub it in Woodpeckers nose that the jig can be done with scrap wood and be just as good as a high priced jig.

@@jwar2163 I think it's just a hilarious coincidence where you can build this for free with crap in your shop waste bin... or you can pay $219.99 US for Woodpeckers magnetic one that will ONLY work on tables that are magnetic.
