  • Dr. Matthew Nagra is here to answer the question: do collagen supplements work? He recaps what the scientific literature says on collagen which may surprise you. It turns out collagen provides you with nothing more than protein (amino acids) which you can also get from other, healthier, and less expensive and trendy foods. He briefly covers:
    ▹ What is collagen?
    ▹ Is collagen healthy?
    ▹ Is collagen good for your skin?
    ▹ Do collagen supplements work?
    ▹ Should you take collagen supplements?
    ▹ Are collagen supplements a waste of money?
    ▹ What does the research on collagen say?

      True, there are very few studies looking at collagen for building muscle. The results are mixed, so we should reserve judgement. But there are a lot of studies on collagen for skin health (12 systematic reviews). It works. Soy protein may also work, but by different mechanisms, and I seriously doubt there is as much research.

    • @presence5426
      @presence5426 Před 3 měsíci

      Not necessarily better. There is collagen in bones, so if broth is made, you will get a certain amount of collagen (as gelatin) out of the bones. The amount is questionable. Bone broth probably has other useful constituents, however.

    This is what I was looking for!! I was thinking the same:
    Collagen is absorbed in form of amino acids.
    If whey protein is consumed, which too has all the essential and non essential amino acids, will it serve the same use?
    Consuming whey protein with Vit C can replace the need of collagen supplement?
    I am weight loss diet, low fat, high protein and carbohydrates ( about 80-85gm protein/day, 67.5 gm of which comes from whey protein)
    I am concerned about the loose skin that I would be having. I started at 128 kgs and after 3 months I am at 112 kgs.
    ( Now on maintenance diet for 1 month)

    • @presence5426
      @presence5426 Před 3 měsíci

      Collagen is absorbed mostly in the form of AA's, yes. But there are also short peptides absorbed. That's what makes collagen unique. Further, the AA profile of collagen is different: lots of hydroxyproline, glycine, and proline. So taking collagen gives us a spike of these.

    Thanks. Well explained I think. However, legumes other than soy were mentioned just briefly in passing, I recall peas once towards the end. Soy and hemp were repeated: although their amino acid profile is probably superior, still other legumes like chickpeas, mung beans, pinto beans, lentils are also excellent sources of protein. Moreover a lot of the soy is GMO. And non lentil plant foods too contribute their protein. I feel these other legumes should have been given due prominence, and non legume plant foods mentioned too.

    • @80slimshadys

      @@FruityHachi yes but why talk about only soy? I'm vegan since 2000 and I hardly every have soy beans or soy products because we have many other types of legumes traditionally eaten in many parts of the world. Sometimes I do buy a packet of soy beans but have them in rotation with lentils, small white beans, small red beans, pinto beans, dried green peas, dried white peas, small brown chickpeas, large white chickpeas, mung beans and maybe six or eight other types of legumes. I never have tofu or soya derived faux meats though of course I've tried tofu, used to have it sometimes years ago. Certain amino acids (hydroxyproline, proline, glycine) are abundant in collagen, are are absorbed. These AA may have positive effects in and of themselves. There are also short peptides, unique to collagen, which are bioavailable. Then there is a novel anti-inflammatory effect. Collagen contains 18 amino acids that help to rejuvenate skin, thicken and strengthen hair, as well as keep nails strong as you age. Collagen protein makes up more than 80% of your skin so adding a daily supplement to your daily nutrition as you age helps to support skin hydration, elasticity, and minimize wrinkles. Collagen also increases the production of keratin, which is the main component of hair, promoting hair structure, strength, and growth.

    Multiple errors. Collagen supplements do have something that soy protein doesn't: hydroxyproline & unique short peptides. The short peptides found within collagen are bioavailable & bioactive. They're a big reason why collagen works to promote skin health. There are 12 published systematic reviews demonstrating effectiveness. Soy protein may very well also promote skin health. But I doubt it has as much evidence behind it.

    Just take silica. It's what I've been taking for years. And silica is a building block for collagen. It stimulates the production of collagen so there's nothing to break down. My favorite brand is Orgono but there's also the German brand called Hubner, and you could go with Bamboo Extract. Bamboo will work but it takes longer for the silica in bamboo to build up in your system. Orgono works really fast. Faster than the rest.

      @@davidjones-wy3ln Look up the two books written by Klaus Kaufmann on Silica. One is out of print but occasionally resurfaces a a good price for a used book. The second book retails for around $11. The first one is called Silica: The Forgotten Nutrient and has a photo of Miss Universe, I believe, from the year it was written. You can also check abe books for this title as they often have great used copies. Just don't spend any more than twenty for the first book. The second book is called, Silica: The Amazing Gel and is actually referencing a product now referred to as Hubner.

      All I know about silica is that I breathed in too much from cutting stone for years lol

      @@80slimshadys Not really laughing at you, per se. But the silica that you breathed in would not be food grade silica for you or I.

    Great video! Collagen seems to just be the latest fad and is so much more expensive than many of the vegan proteins out there.

      He's a phony. He didn't use any science based information to support his argument. All he used was his vegan bias to deter people from trying collagen supplements. Shame on him. Take 90 out of 100 people's fact based word for it, not just one idiot like this guy. There's countless videos on CZcams of doctors supporting collagen supplementation and their benefits.

      so I have soy at lunch or dinner time

      also, what kind of soy products do you consume and with what? is it just straight tofu, tempeh, miso, edamame or junk food soy products? if it's the junk type, all junk food is inflammatory, not just the soy type
