Helps to rotate the filter cover a little as the cover makes first contact with the seal ring. Also a little clean oil can help. Additionally always make sure it requires you to compress the spring and shove the follower back into the cover as you start the bolt. Had one that somehow lost the follower stuck in the old filter and the guy changing it didn’t catch it. Got expensive after that because the brakes were shot and shedding metal.
Crazy how John Deere went from a 4020 to the crap today. You could buy a new 4020 and plan on it for 15 years. Today farmers lease a new tractor for a couple years knowing after that it will cost too much in repairs.
Merry Christmas Warren! The “tow position” you referred to several times is up above the hydraulic filters. I do believe that there is a transmission disconnect for cold starting, one lever on the side of the dash is the disconnect and the other side is the PTO. Been 40 years since I sat on one.
Ain't it nice to work on something simple and not have to take loads of bits off to get at the job in hand.. we have a 3130 JD in for a service. What a nice tractor.

Warren, we had a gas power shift 4020 when they first came out. Burned a lot of gas and had no power. Traded it for a diesel 4020 and dad said it was the first real tractor he ever had. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Hey warren merry Christmas and a happy new year check the park cable on that 4020 it’s either froze up or broken or maybe the park paw spring is broken😅
Second linkage rod is to shift forward to reverse. You can look down in the slot where the shifter moves and see the mechanism that is pushed when you move stick left to go up into the reverse slot. Pull back on PTO lever to stop the shaft. It’s NOT good to have brake on when you flip lever back and something heavy wants to keep it spinning. Wears brake out prematurely. It should stop if you pull lever back hard.
And the pivot shafts get rusty also. Just had a JD grader do the same thing from guys leaving the door open and rain getting in on the control station levers

Warren check and see if the spring mechanism is pulling the cable to the park pawl, into its full length position. Those cables will freeze up and fool you!
On my 4020 I've had the spring come off the park pawel in side the transmission, easy fix if you take the top off the transmission, it's happened twice on me, the pawel will fall into engagement with it's own weight but seems slow to do it when cold
I got a guy who is a john deere mechanic who is the best, he rattles the parts numbers of what he needs off in his head, when I can't find the part number I call him and he instantly repeats it. It is uncanny.

I grew up on a 4020 powershift. Spent many a day doing field work on it.

Hint, when putting Trans filter covers back on turn them slowly n gently when tightening bolt, help with alignment
Warren Park lock is on that cable on right side. Pawl Is probably broke on inside, check if cable is moving.

I would have thought so too.
I suspect that brake valve has a bad boot and the piston is rusty hanging the brakes up. I see it all the time on those old open station tractors.

I may wrench on yellow iron during the day, but man do I learn a ton on the green stuff from here.
