Paden (Kevin Kline) heads to the edge of town for his classic Western fast draw duel with Sheriff Cobb (Brian Dennehy), while Stella (Linda Hunt) awaits the results off to the side.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Lawrence Kasdan's Silverado is a fond hark back to the all-star, big-budget westerns of the 1950s and 1960s. The various plotlines converge at the town of Silverado, held in thrall by crooked sheriff Brian Dennehy and his behemoth "deputies." The four disparate heroes--Kevin Kline, Kevin Costner, Scott Glenn and Danny Glover--prepare to do battle against Dennehy for personal reasons ranging from mercenary to altruistic. Sidelines characters include duplicitous, dandified gambler Jeff Goldblum, frontier widow Rosanna Arquette and gimlet-eyed saloon owner Linda Hunt. The film is stolen hands-down by Kevin Costner, playing an irresponsible young gunslinger who never speaks when hootin' and hollerin' will do. A classic, High Noon-style showdown caps this rousing retro western.

There was symbolism in this scene: behind Paden was a church, representing purity and peace while behind Cobb was the desert, representing a vast void of emptiness. RIP Brian Dennehy.

Actually this is a nod to the Gunsmoke original intro. Marshal Dillon was facing a bad guy down the street with a church behind him next to the porch of a store. At first all you saw was Dillon’s pistol grip in the holster and it shows the guy in black at the end of the street with the church and stores in the background.
The irony is that the sheriff is the bad guy here and his opponent the good guy

I know this has probably been pointed out, but the symbolism of the town behind Paden and the desert behind Cobb is very nice
I guess he missed to Pattens right. the Horse behind him on his left is still standing without moving at all !
Not just the town--the church, a symbol of morality.
and the desert behind Cobb is the domain of Satan. Perfect Good vs. evil symbology.
I love how they say goodbye to each other before shooting! I love westerns and this is one of my all time favorites, I've always felt it doesn't get the love it deserves.
As I recall this was considered something of a revival of the genre. My personal favorite moment was Danny Glover rising up from his hiding place with a rifle and telling the bad guy, "Now I don't want to kill you, and you don't want to be dead."
You know what makes a great western? They could base it in the east and it still would be great.

He always struck me as a barrel walking around on two matchsticks. That's not intended to be a slam, just an impression. But he was not without faults. For almost 30 years he pretended he served in Viet Nam while in the Marines, when in fact he was stationed on Okinawa. He did finally own that bit of Stolen Valor though, and I give him credit for that.
I wish they still made movies like this. Loved this film.

R.I.P. Brian Dennehy, A Great Actor , And A Good Man With A Big Heart.
He was not without his faults. He served in the Marine Corp but for almost 30 years he lied about serving in Viet Nam (he was stationed instead on Okinawa). He did finally own that bit of Stolen Valor though, and I give him credit for that if the circumstances were genuine and not just an effort to cut his losses.
Silverado may be the most under rated western ever
Take note at 0:25 Cobb checks the position of the sun. He sees that it's behind him and in Paden's eyes so Cobb leaves his hat on the hitching post since it's not needed and would be a hinderance. It took so much time to film this that Paden acts as a sundial throughout it and you can see his shadow move around him. Speaking of shadows, this great film had the misfortune of opening 6 days after Back to The Future in July 1985, so would always be overshadowed. We were spoiled with riches that summer: Goonies, Silverado, Back to The Future, Rambo II, Beyond The Thunderdome, St. Elmo's Fire, Weird Science...

Perfect summer movie/escapist fare. One minute we were on the beach, the burning sand, in Wildwood, New Jersey, and the next we were watching the opening credits for Silverado (1985). I honestly do not know where those thirty-five years went.
One year before I left highschool in 86 .. So this dates me lol 52 now.. I could not wait to see this movie .I have seen it 10 times.
This movie, Quigley, the new True Grit, and Tombstone are some of my favorite Westerns. Really great casts combined with directors who knew how to let the story unfold and tell itself.

Lawrence Kasdan threw in just about every cliché in the filmmaker's book. And yet! This movie is still one of my favorites. Everyone was on board to create a tribute to the classic Western. And there is subtle humor: the little boy crying because "Jake died when he fell off his horse."
+godsmacker -- In this one scene alone you get the wind blowing, tumbleweed rolling down Main Street, the good guy and the bad guy facing off, closeup of the hand ready to draw, the stark silhouettes of buildings on the only street in town, etc. In another clip from this movie there was even a cattle stampede! You must have had a great time.

The whole movie is like one last hurrah and love letter to the classic Western. The crooked sheriff, the shady gambler with a hidden weapon (two even, the knife in his boot and the pistol up his sleeve), the tumbleweeds, the one-on-one shootout, etc.

I find it the easiest western to watch. For one thing it's beautifully filmed. Like you say, it brings in a pile of clichés. One that sticks out for me is the long ride into town where the other fighters seem to come out of nowhere on their horses to join up at the side of their "brethren" to right some wrongs, non stop, no chit chat. I can't remember what original movie did that but it's cool.
RIP to a real master, immortal, legend, raconteur, Irish rascal & a larger than life stage thespian who put his love of theater before movies, Brian Dennehy had a presence & genuine talent that few could ever emulate. Truly one of the Last of the Mohicans, a man's man, old school Irish guy & a colossus who was deeply dedicated to his craft, he will be sorely missed. RIP Brian Dennehy🙏🙏🍻🍺🍻🍺☘☘☘

One of my favorite westerns, can't go wrong with Brian Dennehy and the whole cast but I loved Kevin Cline in this role, at first I thought no not him in a western but it's my favorite role of his. His love and protection for Linda Hunt ( she is amazing) is so powerful...actually I think it's time to pull out the dvd again..😆

Gotta love Cobbs head nod in irritation in those last few seconds when he realised he'd been shot before dying. Details like this is what made this movie awsome.

I don't think anyone could have played the part of Cobb better than Brian Denehy. His whole demeanor just made it so believable. Beyond excellent!

The soundtrack of this film was great. Listening to the rifles and pistols being cocked is clear and resonates.
Everyone used short barrel 45s in quickdraw holsters.

He may never have been able to pull his cop coat over his stomach but he was one of moviedom's most dangerous lawmen.
It's called a frock coat, which is the style coat I like a lot
I adhere to three irrefutable truths in cinema: no one cusses like Bruce Willis, no one mourns like Mel Gibson, and nobody, NOBODY dies like Brian Denehy! This scene is an amazing ending to one of the greatest westerns of all time. It had a terrific cast, a solid plot, and fitting action. It truly was a great ensemble film and everyone involved was perfect. I love this scene the most though, for lots of reasons, not the least of which is Denehy’s acting. The way they face each other, none has any real contempt for the other. There’s no anger, no hatred, not even a real clear sense of good vs evil portrayed in this scene. Yes?m, we know Cobb is bad, but he barely reveals it here. Instead you have two trains passing in the night, but both have realized they are on the same track on a collision course, and one must yield. They both wished to avoid it, but both are prepared for it, whatever the outcome. Neither of them even portray any sense of superiority in motive or skill and neither is has any fear of the other. This is for all intents and purposes, the BEST duel!
Dennehy started out on TV as a big lovable bear type in various characters. Then he started playing corrupt cops, John Wayne Gacey (sp?) and other bad'uns. I always like seeing him on screen.
Two things; one about dying...won't argue with your choice but my money is on Sean Bean, two...it is a hoot to go back and watch Foul Play where Denehy plays partner to Chevy Chase and straight man to Goldie Hawn 1976 so everybody is young.
How 'bout Dan Duyrea as the master of dying. BD studied under him.
No theatrics, no dramatics, no long drawn out speeches or elongated grievances or verbose nonsense or malice savagely expressed.
Just two dudes opposing each other for moral & ethical reasons coming together in a deadly fashion that was basically a foregone conclusion, using very few words & displaying zero rage or hatred, two expert gunslingers with a score to settle.
The eerie sound of the wind swept desert both ups the tension & accentuates the sense of lonely desolation.
And both men are not without respect & admiration, despite their unwavering intent to kill one another. It was a duel for the ages, righteousness & justice vs corruption & tyranny.
Great way to cap off a fantastic & legendary Western.
RIP Brian Dennehy, last of the Mohicans, a true thespian & old school Irish raconteur.

This is the last western movie I am aware of that used the ahistorical, Arvo Ojala fast draw, tied-down holster that was such a staple of western movies for so many decades. Westerns made after this have mostly gone in for period-correct gunleather, which is a trend I heartily approve of. And yet this is one of my favorite westerns of all time. It was made well after the golden age of Hollywood westerns was over, and after the somewhat revisionist, spaghetti western trend had come along to subvert the classic western mythology and blur the lines between good guys and bad guys. Silverado was clearly made as an homage to the classic westerns of the earlier era -- respectful to, not subversive of the heroic themes of the earlier movies. It's a shame the movie didn't perform better at the box office.
I think Unforgiven was the true homage and swan song for Westerns in Cinema.

@@dogeshark204 agreed. Unforgiven is what “deconstruction” done right looks like. Eastwood took what he and Leone did thirty years earlier and took it to the next level. I don’t consider it superior to Leone’s work, but a worthy successor nonetheless in the spirit of Leone. The style itself is very much Eastwood.

1982 : In an act of police brutality, Sheriff Teasle tries to break Rambo's spirit. And comes off second-best. 1985 : a corrupt sheriff Cobb tries his luck in a duel. And comes off second-best. RIP, Brian Dennehy.
Paden was frosty when he said "Goodbye Cobb." Cobb's response was spoken like a man who knows he's going to die. And the look on Stella's face after Paden shot Cobb was almost fearful.
Kevin Kline has such range as an actor , from gunman cowboy to suave French jewel thief , then to the President of the US .
One of my favorite actors , as is Scott Glenn , Danny Glover and Jeff Goldblum .

In the original VHS version of this movie, the screen couldn't fit both Paden and Cob because it was shot in wide screen and the ratios didn't work, so it looked like they had shot the scene with Paden out of frame. You couldn't see Paden out-drawing Cob. For years I couldn't figure out how they could make such an error, then I read an article call the Unkindest Cuts of All describing the wide screen issues, couldn't wait to finally see the scene on DVD. Great movie, holds up 38 years later, no small feat.

There's just something about a western! Love Westerns! Even throughout shootings & violence I feel westerns have always had some sense of family values & morals we take for granted. Just saying. That's my take.

yes, or maybe, it's just a chaotic world where any day can be your last because some fast drawing cowboy decided he didn't like you for whatever random reason to satisfy his thirst for killing, sounds like a wholesome society to live in with exemplary family values and morals. Basically become the fastest deadliest shooter and you can do whatever you want until another faster deadlier shooter comes along. What a great environment to live in, oh wait, isn't that basically a smaller metaphor for our current governmental systems. The people with the most power have the biggest deadliest destruction capability and hold everyone under that power. Guess nothing has really changed, other than the guns have become deadlier

I love this movie. It's one of my favorite westerns. It's also the last western I can think of that still used that inaccurate, Hollywood Arvo Ojala fast draw rig. Westerns made after this one have all tended to feature more historically accurate leather gear -- a trend of which I thoroughly approve. But I still love this movie, and I think it's just a great, fun, superbly entertaining western adventure film.
