STOP... it makes me sad to see partnerships like this... Ipsos i-Say is a SCAM. you're lucky if you can make $2/hour. I had to spend 2wks full time (8hrs/day, 5day/wk) using this and other survey sites. I made approximately $85/wk in 40hrs. It was a HUGE RIPOFF. Please don't partner with scams... makes everything you have done previous feel even more predatory/scammy.
I would find a way to add bird sounds and other nature sounds.
I'd add a flame effect to make it more natural

love the repurposing of old retro stuff to give them new life & not to mention the design aesthetics to keep things as stock as possible! I wish you had moved forward with your acrylic bending as I'd love to see that & it would make the lantern appear as though it still had the glass (also keeps the vellum & stuff inside protected from accidental incursions).
as far as features are concerned:
> phone app to allow BT control of lighting modes/animations;
> more LEDs (aligned vertically around the central spire) so it'll be much brighter & actually useful outdoors ~segments can be turned off to conserve power aside from brightness controls;
> capacitive sensors can be added so that touching a predetermined spot on the shell housing the electronics activates controls (lighting mode, strip on/off cycle, etc);
> sound-reactive pulsing lights (easily accomplished with a sound module);

I was thinking making it so the LEDs could flicker like a flame. Not sure if that’s possible but I think of like the fake candles which would be awesome for the lantern.
To add to the effect, you could also add sound effects to sound like the original oil lamp. Would make a great white noise night light.
This is absolutely possible. Bob has already basically built it for the functionality, though I'm not sure if the same software was used. There's an ESP-based LED system called WLED that allows you to program different modes, like holiday lighting effects, etc. A flickering fire preset would be remarkably easy to add, if it's not already standard.

The coolest part of rotary encoders is that they can turn forever, unlike potentiometers
Esp can hook into home assistant pretty easy. It'd be handy to have the lighting hooked into the LEDs you put in those benches, or lighting in the porch. Bonus points if you use BT beaconing to let the physical location determine which (if any) it tries to control.
Could also be useful for things like "Rain Imminent" alerts, what audible or light alerts, signals for things like "Dinner" (or a broadcast endpoint? I don't know about those....)

I definitely would have replaced the glass and inserted the defuser in the glass. Super creative project and WAY over my head! Gave it a new life, happydays!
This was my favorite electronics build on your channel so far! I love seeing vintage nostalgia combined with modern uses. I have an old Arvin 8584 radio that I want to convert to Bluetooth and I think your project gave me the impetus to start doing it.
as someone who collects vintage Coleman equipment this hurts my soul to see you destroy a nice vintage lantern but was a cool project!
Agreed! But since the damage is done, add solar charging capability and some Bluetooth sub and satellite speaker options 😊

Terrific project. One of my favorites in almost a decade of watching. Rotary encoders are one of my favorite inputs for microcontroller projects.
This was one of my favorite videos from you guys in a while. Also you asked for what else it can do- everyone always appreciates USB charges, AC charges, and headphone ports.
I love this project, I've got some of my grandfather's tools and I love thinking about him every time I use them. Bringing other old things back to life is a great idea.

I think it would be cool if you took a good quality picture of where the name was painted on and made it into a file so you could cut it out on a vinyl cutter. As time goes on it may wear off so being able to recreate it with vinyl would be a nice touch that you may appreciate in a few years.

That looks so cool. I'd probably add a little sub-woofer in the base pointing down, so when it's placed on a table you can get the bass passing into it.

If you are using it just for ambient lighting, you should have a candle flicker in it to simulate the flame.
Yikes, I’m a lantern nerd…. I like the outcome but wish it was done on a lantern that was no longer useable. It easily could have been cleaned and used as was intended for very little money. I get why you did what you did though. Also fyi, it used white gas or Coleman gas not kerosene.
Yeah, that was my first thought: the original lantern was a white gas lantern, not a kerosene lantern. It was clearly set up for a mantle (white gas), not a wick (kerosene).
As an extra feature, albeit a small one, I would add a candle flicker mode to the LEDs to mimic an actual kerosene lamp light!

Given that you've got a somewhat opaque diffuser, you could 3d print a center column to hold that LED strip in place at a consistent distance.
As for the arduino - I'm not sure. Maybe a GPS module and use it as sort of a location beacon? Would probably be easier to just add an Airtag inside.
Maybe add a pinhole camera and use it to try and capture some wildlife video remotely? Or add a capacitive touch detector and make it "speak" Jenie's lines from Aladdin when someone rubs it :D

I just bought some old white gas lanterns a while back at a yard sale. I fired one of them up the other day. Although mine was not in near as bad shape as that one. Keep making! Love the channel.
I have an old railroad lantern in my basement. All I know about its history is that it has something to do with the former railroad that our farm used to ship milk on. I think I would like to do something like this project with it, and one feature I'll add is to have it make astromech droid sounds when I press its buttons.

Program the LEDs to cycle and it will simulate a flame behind the translucent material. Great video and project!
Use the knob to adjust the intensity of the light as like how the kerosene one works.
Add an ipcam for extra eye on the backyard.
Hook it up to a solar panel.

As others have said, it's a white gas lantern. I still own one. Super fragile mantles! Awesome update to the original!!!
How about a blue/white/red time of day gradient, synced to wake and bed time. Or maybe a "fire flicker" effect if you put in individually addressed LEDs.
If you're running wled on the Esp32, that easily integrates with home assistant if you want to have it automatically turn on and off with the time of day, or whatever else you can imagine. Neat project!

Great video, Bob! It would be cool if the lantern could have communication functionality like a walkie talkie, so if something is needed you can ask someone inside to bring it out!
Another awesome video Bob! If I were to try and add more functionality to the lantern, I'd try and put another switch behind the knob on the upper portion of the lamp to allow me to skip/scan thru the tracks that the speakers are playing.
It would be cool if you added a sound file of a real kerosene lantern burning. They have a very distinct sound.

I love it, I have a few old lanterns too and I may just mod one myself. Thanks for the great idea. One thing that I would so differently, is using just white LED's that are supper bright. the reason that this lantern was popular was how bright they were. and by making he brightness controllable would be awesome

ultrasonic bug repelent would be really cool for those days where the fire isnt going but you still want to stay outside without the bugs eating you alive.

Oh man! Super neat project and so much potential! Since you're hiding the insides with that diffusion, you can cut out the middle lantern mechanisms, install a RGB multi LED 360 non-diffused bulb in there for much brighter output. It seems kind of dim with those lights but it still works great as a mood light! You can also install a much bigger battery if you either take a battery pack apart and install the parts or go with a custom battery solution with 18650s for the higher drain light. I'm also SO curious what it would sound like if you cut holes to mount the speakers where they're just sitting now and use the tank as a speaker box. I know full well acoustics and box volume and all that is a big complicated thing for speakers but I would imagine it would probably sound better than open air speakers like that. Another stupid fun thought is to make a "fire like effect" on the LEDs but make it change hue (between yellow and orange) with the music! A modern touch on the classic "flickering flame" LEDs out there!

You can program the arduino to do flame flickering by using both the digial and analof outputs for some of the leds and getting clever with random pulseing on the digital output. I actually have the code around here someplace.
Great project! Since you already have speakers and the ESP with wifi, how about adding the ability to receive a notification?

Could you add something to so when you pick it up it goes full brightness / white (for walking around) then go back to previous setting when put back down.
Great video! The only thing I would suggest is to make the inside a plasma speaker so that you’ve got the light AND the sound all at once (minus the diffuser). Granted, the sound wouldn’t be great, but it would be cool to see.

I really like to see old things given a new life. I am working (I use that word very loosely) on converting an old standing radio into a Bluetooth radio. I have been kind of stuck on the knobs, but I will have to look for the ones you mentioned. Is it possible to get a copy of the files you used for the knob? It would save me a ton of time trying to recreate it. Thank you.

One thing to note for people making something like this themselves is that not all USB power bricks will allow charging and power stuff too. So you'll want to make sure it can do that before trying this. Or just know that you can't keep it plugged in all the time.

In the Navy, we used Nevr Dull. Not a lot of use for it on a submarine, but it's been my go-to for making with the shiny.

Wright’s Brass Polish is water-based and much less noxious…if you can find it! (The silver polish is much easier to find)

Adding wifi so you could also add some kind of digital assistant (e.g., Google, Alexa...) might be handy as well.
They make glass for those still. Frosted, clear. Even a 50/50 between the two.

I think adding a function that alerts you of rain or other weather nearby would be interesting to have near the fire pit. Like flashing blue to alert you that rain is coming soon and give you time to clean up and put the fire out.
Have another color to alert you that someone is at your front door when the pizza arrives. Ha ha.
Know your phone does this but nice to not have to look at it.

Great use of an old lantern. I don't know how you would do it but do you think there would be a way to add a mozzie repellent function? Maybe a sensor that detects a mozzie landing on it and releases an aerosol or even better, zaps it.

We had one of those lamps when I was a kid. I remember camping with my parents with one of those. my trumpet had a lacquer clear coat didnt polish it.
This was a good nostalgia project.

Only thing I might do is develop an app to set up additional functionality. Like set custom colors or make it work like a flasher if need be.
I would add a circular center column to wrap the LEDs around so you can add more LEDs inside (thinking like a toilet paper or paper towel cardboard roll or PVC). I would also think about utilizing more space for additional batteries. Lastly what happened to the speakers?
a timer for lights, auto shut-off. my boys would leave it on all night.

I don't know if you mentioned it or not, but tying the audio and lights together would be a cool upgrade that probably already has the code to do it written on someone's github.
find a glass jar that is roughly the size of the lantern, and cut the bottom off, it would add a lot to the realism of the lantern. Adding a wireless charging coil and a wireless charging pad could be cool too! Or a magnetic USB connector!

Check for weather/storm warnings, say every hour, and if there is a storm coming, blink red, and if it gets very close, play a siren.
By pressing a button it starts telling scary camping stories. Maybe even make the lights react in real time with the story!

Great video! How about adding a weather station/emergency radio?
I realize that others have suggested similar, but don't really include the "how" part. Something I would try is making the LED spiral tighter with the LEDs spaced to form a matrix. Then you could create preprogrammed patterns like Flame flicker or other effects. Combined with the built in speakers it could emulate the look and sound of the original oil flame. If MQTT is implemented the lantern could receive MQTT messages for control from Home Assistant, in a similar way to how Tasmota and ESPHome use MQTT to control "smart" lights. Using another commenters suggestion, using a weather add-on for Home Assistant to detect when the chance of precipitation exceeds a threshold it would send an MQTT message to the lantern to trigger a specific pattern to let you know there is a good chance it will rain. Of course this can also be applied to other lights and devices that can accept MQTT so that its not just a one off project.
Love what you did with the lantern and it will definitely look good on the remodeled porch.
