- The plaintiff hired the defendant to do his taxes. He claims his tax refund went to the defendant, not him. He’s suing for stolen money. The defendant argues he did nothing wrong and the refund was his payment.

Nah, it depends on the complexity and the time required to file. A friend gets charged 2500/year for her taxes (independent contractor), at a local CPA. Many tax preparers charge 100-400/hr. I was charged a little over $1200 once.

I agree with the others about complexity, however this guy was a cab driver. I highly doubt he has overseas investments, multiple income sources, rentals, pensions, stocks, interest, VAT returns etc etc. I reckon he's been overcharged.

A lot of these shady tax preparation companies do this I know a girl who was charged $1,000 for a simple tax return and she had no clue until she called the irs to see when her refund was coming

People usually get 5-10k back so a fee would be a small price to pay to get extra money back. I wouldn't do it though

That is a high amount of money being asked for a simple tax return. I think this guy is taking advantage of people. Some of his clients are very poor and not knowledgeable. He then uses that to alter paper work so that the money goes into his account and then short changes the customer. The customer could get back $800 and he just says here is $200. To someone that is poor, they might think $200 is a lot of money and he just pockets the rest. Kind of shameful if that is what he is doing. He also was trying to pull one over on the judge with the paperwork he was giving her.

I work for CPA. It’s not uncommon for people to use the refund to pay for the service. The IRS puts the accountants fee in their bank & the rest in taxpayers bank

I know my taxes are pricy, but I also know they're complex and I didn't choose my accountant based on price. Regardless, if he thinks it's $150 but he's paying $850, there's def an issue.

No one pays a fee to have taxes done, that is more than the refund. The tax preparer is scaming his customers, this one is not the first, likely for years.. For the refund amount, a $150 or $200 sounds about right.
These rats taking advantage of economically underprivileged people make me sick.
I'm a CPA. $850 for a simple 1040 is daytime robbery, and especially so if this clown can't even produce an engagement letter stating that this is the agreed upon price for services rendered.
There IS such a thing as pay-by-refund, but it does NOT work that way. This tax preparer is a crook and they need to be stopped.

I always do my taxes for free through the IRS website. Before that I did them myself with the paper forms. Tax preparation is outrageous, unless you have a lot of deductions, it's not worth itemizing anymore.

The more I listen to these cases, the more I begin to realize that a lot of times, the information that Harvey is relaying is inaccurate as it relates to the case. He often mixes up details. The amount of the refund was NOT the same as the fee for preparing the taxes. It was clearly stated that when the defendant forwarded the tax refund to the plaintiff, he had DEDUCTED the (bogus) fee for tax preparation.
Wait a sec, how is there no update to this? There should clearly be an update at the end to say whether defendant found the proper stuff or not. Court staff dropped the ball with this one
I know I live in Canada but I only pay $35 to have my taxes done 😭 anything over $200 is crazy especially if it’s for those who don’t have a complex tax situation.

The defendant is a total scammer and I bet that document has a forged signature. If the defendant gets the refund and only sends the client what he wants and keeps back an aditional $650 each time, how on earth would his clients know that he has kept that money. He needs to be prosecuted for fraud...
Forgive me, please. Why do people defraud each other? Why is it native Africans a lot? I am truly bewildered. We are always hearing a check on the internet is available if one sends US $ or some other such scam. Why? This just so sketchy and wrong.

My neighbor was arrested for fraud. The Feds raided his apartment and took out a lot of boxes and proof of the fraud. He should been sentenced and gone to prison but he was an old man. Messing around with the IRS is serious business.

Everything out of the defendants mouth is a blatant lie. This is NOT how CPA’s operate and if he’s been doing this for 30 years, that’s a lot of victims to this scam. “I’ll do your taxes BUT I keep all the money you get back”. Yeah, NO

I've never been on this show or any other courtroom televised show but I almost wished that I had because she wouldn't talk to me like she does most black and brown people. She even disrespectfully waved the plaintiff off as she stood up.

It's not just how she talks to black and brown people sometimes, some of her rulings clearly favor whites and almost always she rules in favor of people who are pro-life politically. Ironically, the judge is Latino (both her parents are from Cuba).
