    Thanks for watching folks! I wanted to take on an easier topic before I deep dive into my next history video.
    I expect it to be done in 3 to 4 weeks, so in the meantime check out some of the randomizers featured here!

    This is so great! Honestly glad you didn't just make "Top 10 SquareEnix-Specifically-Final-Fantasy-JRPG Speedruns". Loved finding out about some of these other randomizers, like Quest64!? That's amazing!! Great video Doc :)

  • @gameboy9
    @gameboy9 Před 2 lety +7

    In my view, I think that it's a bit funny that Final Fantasy 1 Randomizer(FFR) and Dragon Warrior Randomizer(DWR), the 2nd and 3rd biggest RPG Rando communities that I know of(I do know that they have at least two tournaments / year with 25+ entrants) didn't even "rank in". To be fair, however, I can understand why, considering the author's criteria in that this person was looking for significant gameplay change. This, I concede, would rule out DWR, but it doesn't rule out FFR, since they are also more "open world" with more options than any other rando I know of.
    All that being said, the author's choice of #1 (I won't spoil it), is something I 100% agree with, in my opinion.

    • @gameboy9
      @gameboy9 Před 2 lety

      Addendum: I can, also to be fair, see FFR being ruled out in that it would be 3 entries in the top 10...

    • @Nemo2342
      @Nemo2342 Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah, no NES entries at all was a bit of a let down. I was expecting at least DWR if not FFR.

    • @Tristalmtg
      @Tristalmtg Před 2 lety +1

      I came here to be Mad On The Internet about those exact two omissions too.
      I think you'll find in DWR version 3.0 that it absolutely changes gameplay significantly. I posit it's not even possible to improve a game more via the randomizer, given how weak vanilla gameplay is.

    • @durdndemolition
      @durdndemolition Před rokem

      DWR randomizes the map itself, sort of a roguelike. Seems like a pretty significant gameplay change.

    Interesting but not sure how you missed FF1 and V except maybe you just didn't want too much final fantasy on the list. Else-wise opinions are opinions and I wouldn't argue over someone's rankings. Randomizers made retro gaming better and I am glad we have them.

    Worlds Collide and Beyond Chaos are very different takes on a FFVI randomizer experience. BC is much more of a play through the story of the game with a bunch of stuff changed. Worlds Collide is much more akin to Free Enterprise, find the stuff you need to fight Kefka, and characters open up various checks.
    Worlds Collide has a very useful series (that I made, so truth in advertising) called Moogle's First Seed that can walk you through your first playthrough. czcams.com/video/BbwOJSuk_So/video.html

    i'm not sure if it was just overlooked or it's just because it's new but i definitely feel the new Paper Mario 64 Randomizer should've definitely made it on this list. They got some incredibly cool things that gives a very lock and key system while also not feeling railroaded. It's very new but it's showing to have huge potential and i'm excited to see how far it goes

  • @Tristalmtg

    I feel like not including Dragon Warrior Randomizer was a serious oversight. Aside from Pokemon, it's the highest raced Randomizer RPG on Racetime. It's one of the oldest RPG Randos on top of that, with an active community and active developers. Check it out sometime!

  • @DarkKnightCecil188
    @DarkKnightCecil188 Před 2 lety +1

    Regarding Beyond Chaos, the development of it is still ongoing with the Beyond Chaos Community Edition(which, yes, is somewhat unfortunately confusing by this point), and new updates are being made to this day(most recent being about a week ago). And as far as speedruns go, the airship mode was never really meant for speedrunning; it's more of a code for testing that was put in the official release for transparency. Instead, we have the Kefka At Narshe mode for the World of Balance, the Dragon Hunt mode for the open world, World of Ruin style run, and then there's the Racecave mode, to include the excellent Ancient Cave design within the purview of speedrunning. The bingo card option can also be used in conjunction with any of these for some extra targets. The other settings can also be used to tweak the run length, ranging from perhaps about 1 hour, to perhaps about 5 hours, depending on what the player is looking for.

    honestly a little bit surprised that dragon warrior randomizer didn't make this list, it takes the simplicity of the first dragon warrior game and leverages it to its advantage with a randomized world map, so it turns the game into more of a meta-game of exploration, finding where all of the key items are and where the best grinding spots are. if you watch a few run throughs of it you end up picking up all the skills you need, which is mostly "when can i win", because there's a decent tracker for keeping track of what's in all of the different towns and cave areas. it also has a decent size racing community last i checked and is pretty short, i think the longest i spent was around 3 hours on my first casual runthrough after watching it for a while

  • @LiquidOrcana
    @LiquidOrcana Před 2 lety +1

    It's definitely not as crazy as some of the randomized in this list, but the Fire Emblem randomizers are really fun, since you can end up with quite a different team comp when all of your characters, their growth rates, weapons, and classes are randomized.

    I'd like to mention the Paper Mario TTYD Extreme Randomizer and it's 1 Hour Challenge. It isn't exactly a speedrun, more like a rogue like mode where you're playing for points. It gets old a little quick, but it is fun while it lasts.

  • @Siinory
    @Siinory Před rokem

    FF4FE being first, you're good civilization. By far my favorite randomizer, followed by the Minish Cap one but no Zelda games in here as it's been stated. Also for FF4FE, the april fool's seed ALWAYS has Edward as the final boss which I find it amusing

  • @GarlyleWilds
    @GarlyleWilds Před 2 lety +1

    I'm not surprised to see ff5 Career Day not mentioned here, given 5's lack of popularity compared to 6 or 4 especially, but if you're talking speedrun quality, putting randos that take "several sessions" feels like a slight against it. Not to mention the active racing communities of other games like dragon quest 1, which can shuffle the game's entire map.

    Surprised that KH2FM isn't on the list. Turns the Garden of Assemblage (The data org boss hub) into a world hub where you can progress through the worlds in whatever order you want finding 3 proofs to fight Xemnes. Leads to fun and creative strategies to make it through, and also a key item that lets you skip right to Xemnes too.

    Aw, no honorable mention of the FFIV: Lunarian Shuffle, but I guess that is a bit underground (but has some amazing features which I've yet to see in any other randomizer, such as randomly switching your party member with the people you've met per the story progress after every battle, making it a true shuffle, forcing the player to think things through carefully.)
    But I was overjoyed to see FFIV:Free Enterprise top the list. What a labor of love that creation is, but there's a lot on this list which is worth looking into. It's great to see Quest 64 now referred to as a "cult classic" instead of "just plain bad". It has a great foundation, and it's wonderful to see modders try to play to that system to make a better game all around.

  • @mskain4896
    @mskain4896 Před rokem

    Do this again in another year or two and Worlds Collide will supplant BC quite easily as the FF6 Rando of choice and go shooting up this list. It's amazing in most of the same ways as FF4FE with a variety of ways to play the game, and is based on the superior game in FF6 (personal bias obvious). It's got a growing community, with the Ultros League launching this weekend with over 50 participants signed up and it's even going to be at GDQ this year!
    And it's an Action RPG so it wouldn't make this list, but I'd like to shout out the Kingdom Hearts II Garden of Assembly Randomizer, which is an incredibly well-done open universe item hunt (item randomizer, of course) that uses the Garden of Assembly zone to make doors to teleport to all the Disney Worlds to track down the necessary items. The recent GDQ run of that rando was a bit too chaotic and really didn't do it justice, but the fact that it made it shows the kind of popularity it's garnered.
