A Mod is only for the person that owns it. Certainly one can buy a C-Tank watch or an IWC that speaks just to its owner, but a Modded watch becomes as much a part of its owner's originality as do the freckles on their hands. Modding is completely and absolutely worth it. This is a very good "review" of and for a Mod.

I never thought I would have a modded watch. Then Island Watch started modding watches. I have one of Marc’s modded SKX’s and couldn’t be happier. The fully lumed ceramic bezel makes me happy every time I see it light up. And the double domed sapphire crystal just makes sense to me!

I purchased my first modded sxk, the only thing as factory is the dial (same as in this vid). It’s all black case and bezel (yacht master style) with a NH36A movement, a double domed crystal with a red anti reflected coating, red inner chapter ring, red signed threaded crown in black, red minute hand with the second and hour in black, and black background day/date wheel with white text, it’s sitting on a black leather strap with red stitching...... 2 months on I still can’t stop looking at it, I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I couldn’t be happier with my purchase..... and that’s the point of modded watches, it will always be perfect for you. I have watches up to tens of thousands in my collection but this is still one of my favourites.

I have 4 SKX's, all modded. I did two myself and bought two. Had to have one of mine fixed because I have man hands and screwed it up, ruined a handset and movement, expensive mistake. Now I will only buy the finished product. My favorite mod looks OEM, but has a NH36 movement, sapphire, signed crown, and fully aligned everything. Looks like a 007, but is not original.

Did something similar to my SRPD55 :D Since I got into watches, I always wanted an SKX but unfortunately it was already discontinued and I wasn't willing to pay near 3 times the price for the used one despite how much I wanted it, at the end of the day it has 7s26 movement inside which isn't bad but for sure doesn't cost that much lol. So, I modified mine with NAMOKI MOD SKX case with threads, threaded crown, solid steel case back and the SKX bezel insert. It still has the SRPD dial because I like it more than the SKX dial but it is a real diver now :D A SLEEPER!

I've owned 4 different modded watches, one that I modded myself. Years ago I had an SKX173 that failed so I bought a new Seiko 5 on ebay. It was one of the very small cased models with a field-inspired dial. I took the entire movement/dial/hands out of the 5 and put into my SKX173. My other 3 modded watches resulted from buying various dials and hands then sending the watches out to have parts swapped.

    • @X85283

      "一、二、三、四、五、六、日"
      or
      "月、火、水、木、金、土、日"
The former is more Mandarin, meaning "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, sun". Such characters also appears in Japanese kanji.
The latter is Japanese, meaning "moon, fire, water, wood, metal, earth, sun". Such characters comes from Mandarin, but in Mandarin we don't use them to say the day.
Japanese day names come from the first character of the planet in certain planetary hours.
If it's a JDM 5KX, it's probably going to have the day wheel in the latter style :D

I love the classic diver watch. While a Rolex no date sub is still king in my book, and having owned some really nice divers like the Tudor pelagos, I felt I needed an SKX. But I wanted an upgraded movement, sapphire crystal, and some other personal touches like ceramic lumed insert, coin edge bezel, and the whole watch bead blasted. Not to mention everything lines up correctly. Jeff at Watchmakers 4 does incredible work and even depth rates it before sending it out. I get asked quite frequently what it is, because though it’s just a Seiko it really stands out. For reliability it’s always going to be quartz for me (citizen promaster diver FTW) but automatics are something I feel everyone should own at least once.

You have same melody, lyrics, but different approach. As long as is not losing orginal shape is ok with me. Especially when it's satisfying someone's ego. In your case is crown signature.

I think every Seiko fan should have at least one modded SKX. Mine is modded to look a vintage blue dial Seamaster and I put in on a shark mesh bracelet, Yobokies parts, done by NEWW and blasted all the polish off. Kind of a poor mans version of the blue titanium Seamaster 300. It looks cool, definite vintage beater tool watch kind of look, and I wear it like that. Out diving or fishing out on the boat or at the beach- any situation that I would be concerned about a more expensive watch accidentally falling off and being lost to the deep, and it is the watch to wear. Also, I have a SARG011 that I had cerekoted and the seconds hand painted a bit darker, and I have a Tag Auquaracer quartz that I had the lume done to vintage beige and also wear as a bit of a beater. Love them all. Likewise, every uber rich watch collector should have one modded Rolex Sub. :-) However I am not one of those who does a lot of modding, and never myself; I know that is its own niche in the collectors hobby.

Why start with a 5kx, spending unnecessary money for the entire watch, when you could just use a 5kx OEM parts dial, (or any dial of your choice) since you’re swapping out the case, bezel, hands, etc. All of the parts necessary to build a custom SKX inspired ‘homage’ can be had from a variety of sources. What strap do you have on the SKX? I love its vibe. BTW, I have a 5kx that I am gradually modding.

Love that '5KX really different, the sailcloth strap on your SKX, looks great, much better than the original Z22 rubber OEM, I too am a BIG NATO and ZULU strap fan. I have 3 SKX's, a bone stock '009K, love the 'Pepsi' bezel, plus two modded '009's, one with day/date and one with a plan dial, without those complications/functions.
Seiko could easily have updated the 'SKX's with a 4R36 and drilled lugs retained the 200M water resistance and charged what they are now doing so for it's '5' replacement, who knows we may even have got a sapphire crystal?

Personally I hate the word modding being used on watches unless you actually have it modded and not just parts changed. Also you have that band that you bought in Milford so you know about the surfing in N. Hampton and Rye. I've been wearing an SRPD95 since the Fall through Winter, not so much Spring because of Covid and now Summer surfing and it has been through hell and it is perfectly fine. Only a moron would pull the crown when in water and the two times I have had water get into a watch was because I shattered the sapphire crystals which is why Hardlex is superior when you are in the water. I just wish Seiko brought back Sapphlex. Nice watch you got there and Happy 31st

So, different bezel, different bezel insert, different dial, different movement, different hands, different crystal, different case back, different crown, drilled lugs. In what way is that watch still an SKX? You didn't make the watch your own. You made a different watch.
