In this video, I'll take a look at two watches from Seiko's newer Seiko 5 collection: the more mass appealing SRPD51 as well as the more aggressively-styled SRPG61. When these came out, a lot of people just said they were a new and less capable SKX, but as I'll dig into in the video, I think there's a lot more to it than simply that.

Something I’ve always noticed about even budget Seiko’s is that under a micro lens the hands and indices look super sharp. It’s crazy the quality they can hit at that price point.

On the other hands these budget models are crazy inaccurate and often have various other QC issues (misaligned bezels etc). Definitely setting some wrong priorities.

They have some of the worst QC for the money. Quality is subpar for the price. Especially looking at something like a Sumo or higher priced Turtle.

The indices are always way out of alignment with the chapter ring. I wouldn't wear either watch shown in this video because they're both misaligned (as expected) and once you see it, you can't unsee it.

The SRPD series maintains a fairly strong parts compatibility with the SKX, with maybe the exception of the crown and spring bars. While the SKX was certainly a great watch, what Seiko did here was a strong nod towards the modding community, and for that alone I believe Seiko deserves a lot of praise.

I just picked up the SSK001 and also the SRPD79 the black on black “stealth” looking street model. I absolutely LOVE both of these watches. I have zero intention of trying to dive with them, I just really enjoy how both these watches look and feel when I’m wearing them. These are my first ever Seiko’s and now I’m hooked! The SRPD77 (green color & my birth year!) and the SRPD87 (blue color) are now both in my shortlist!! Thanks for the excellent intro into Seiko Teddy!

I bought the all green 5 sports 4 weeks back. It's got the gold hands and writing and indeces. I love it. The SKX case is super comfortable, it's keeping excellent time, the drilled lugs, hacking and manual wind with the upgraded movement is ace. I've hardly had it off in the last 4 weeks as its so comfortable and classy looking. The 100 mts water resistance is perfect for me as I'm not a diver. But it's perfect for washing the dishes, regular swimming etc... I am considering adding a double domed Sapphire crystal and ceramic bezel as I think that would add a touch more class, but I am super happy as it is.

I have a blue SRPD with the beige hour markers and i love it. I have it on the rubber strap and it fits the "dive style" perfectly.
I think Seiko nailed it with these unique color combos, and a watches itself feels good quality and overall well built feeling on your wrist. Yeah its not an SKX, but it doesnt want to be an SKX. I dindt buy it because of the "SKX-ness" of the watch, i bought it because i like the finish of the watch very much and its a beautiful lineup for the price. I highly recommend them if you searching for a well priced "Dive-ish" watch. ( Dive-ish because its only 100m water resistant. I guess its not enough for the divers, but i think its gonna be okey with 99% of the poeple )

I used to think Seiko changing SKX as their fashion watch line out in a mistake, but judging from the number of styles they release it probably not the case for them in financial perspective. However I think they lost out a great portion of their support from SKX lover, who like me would like them to release an updated version which focus on the tool watch + luxury watch aspect (similar to what rolex did). I think Teddy perspective is one way of seeing the situation (btw great presentation as always), and lets hope that date will come.

I reckon it will likely handle deeper than that.

The SKX was for a long time the "gateway drug" into the world of automatic watches and the 5KX is called to follow this path. I got into this world via the SRPD53K1 "Pepsi" during lockdown as the only SKXs in the market were offered by scalpers upwards of $500, and it's been a ride ever since! I recently replaced the original bracelet with a color-matched red-white-blue NATO strap and I couldn't take it off my wrist for the next days!

It checks all the boxes for a budget dress watch, and it does look, dare I say, like a larger Rolex 214273? My only concern is the accuracy of the movement. So I own two seiko 5's, the SNZF17 and SNZG09. I bought them over 7 years ago and I rarely use them today (my tudor is my daily driver). I decided to wear them again a few weeks ago and they both run flawlessly lol. They are built like tanks tbh. Worth the money. I spent less than $150 on both of them.

It's amazing how such a heavy watch is easy to wear. I first bought titanium quartz Seiko and after 2 days battery died. I got back to store and since I discovered that I don't really like light weight titanium I exchanged it for Seiko 5, never regretted it.

Recently fell for the Seiko 5s. Never liked the look of the turtles. But this is right up my alley. Obtained the SSK003, SRPD55K1 and 63K1 two months ago and I couldnt be more satisfied. Great watches for its pricing. Putting jubilee bracelets on the SRPDs really gives it SUCH a lift as well. Strongly recommended.

I'm confused between the 55k1 and 63k1. I really like the green colour in photographs but don't know how it'd look irl. It's going to be my first automatic, what would you recommend?

    • @idontlikestuff
      @idontlikestuff Před 2 měsíci

@@sahilrijwani I'd fully honestly say you will get tired of the green one faster and it will match less things in your wardrobe than a black one would. So if its a big cop for you, go for the black one.

I have purchased one and am very happy with it..and I can say I consider muself lucky to have financialy extended my self to own a great timepeice rather than cheaper options which I have owned many...at this time this is my good watch to wear when I go out...my casio is my work watch...I have also decided if I am going to buy another watch I will save x amount over the next 10 to 12 months to buy something so good that I will consider it the watch that will see me into old age....Seiko have made me appreciate the engineering of a mech/auto over the quartz....

I was tempted by that cement version a few months ago but couldn't get it out of my head that it wasn't quite right and I'd want it in a grey PVD coating and would just end up disappointed. The shots here make it look better than most other photos I saw then.
I went with the bezelless black PVD version in the end.

These watches can sometimes be found on sale for around $200 or less, and at that price they are a good value. Macy's in the US frequently has some models on sale. Online seller Creation Watches in Singapore also has them heavily discounted. If you go with an AD you get the full warranty though. Not sure Macy's or CW are.

I recently brought the seiko 5 sports as an everyday wear watch, absolutely love it,
it oozes quality and I’ve been asked twice if it’s a Rolex hahaha of course nope I show them it’s a seiko and they are very impressed. The only issue i have is mine looses good 45 seconds a day, I know this is an easy fix which I’ll get round too a a later date. But apart from that I’m over the moon with my purchase after all £189 what’s there to complain about

Agree that these are not, and never have been, the SKX replacement. In many ways, Seiko are at their best with the 5 range. The nearest thing to the SKX in the current Seiko collections is the Turtle in my opinion. A fair and balanced review Teddy.

I'm new to automatic watches. Automatic watches have always fascinated me. I'm raising two young kids of my own and have other priorities to spend money on for the next decade. That said, I put aside some extra money and purchased the "Sand" SRP and the black and red SRP. Forgive me, I don't know particular model numbers. Excellent watches for the price. They've brightened my spirits every time I check the time. Accuracy for both runs in the single seconds per days and the self-winding option is perfect, as I switch them out here and there. The see-through back is a great little plus too. I'm considering the cement SRP or perhaps one of special editions. Anyway, they may not be for everyone, but a way too busy single dad in Pennsylvania loves the Seiko 5 to check how long he has until the next activity with the kids, or work, or school, or, etc. etc. etc.
Thank you Seiko for making the day move a bit smoother.

I agree, a Seiko 5 is still a Seiko 5, but with an upgrade movement through the years. Perfect. The SKX isn't replaced yet. No problem for me. But, the problem I have is that Seiko raised there prizes way up, but kept the QC on the same level as 20 years ago. A lot of micro brands do a way better job and have also interesting dials, hands and fantastic lume. Although I still love all my Seiko's, next watch is probably another brand...

  • @BradleyHansonPhotography

I love the SRPD51 (and 55). I have an Orient and I know people keep saying the Orient Kamasu is a better value with the sapphire crystal, but I prefer the cleaner look of the of SRPD and the simpler dial. The colors and band look better to me, too. The blue on the SRPD51 really is gorgeous.

I would pay a premium over the new 5 range for a certified 200m diver. I'm still hoping it comes along one day.
But let's be honest, it's a fantastic mechanical watch that offers new and old fans an amazing package and gateway into the hobbie. For where the market is in 2021, it's a perfect entry watch that can challenge watches over ten times its price when it comes to finish and quality.
