  • Hey everyone!
    In this lesson, I decided to talk about what I personally think is the greatest bass solo of all time, played by one of my favorite bass players, the mighty Jimmy Johnson. The melodicism and musicality is impeccable and I can't even begin to describe the beauty of this solo.

    OUTSTANDING SOLO! Love this, Anthony. I think that Jimmy's phrasing really influenced Skuli on Low Levels High Stakes.

    The Secrets album is fantastic as are the musicians playing on it! Jimmy is not only an amazingly gifted, skilled, and versatile bassist but he's also a PHENOMENAL SOLOIST!!! He makes very complex solos seem very easy to play-THEY ARE NOT! The tone of his Alembic 5-string, the first 5-string ever made, is one of the best I've ever heard! Thank you for another outstanding analysis, Anthony!!!

    It's always escaped me how you hardly ever hear people mentioning Jimmy Johnson amongst the other great bassists - such an amazing musician with a beautiful tone. Thanks for uploading.🙏🏽

    I met Jimmy in Venice, CA, many years ago. He was playing an Alembic 5-string, the first 5 I had ever seen.

    Another favorite Holdsworth-based bass solo is Jeff Berlin's ridiculous tour-de-force on 'Water On The Brain Pt. II': czcams.com/video/EIOrI56dl8Y/video.html and, of course, JJ's other solo on 'Dodgy Boat' : czcams.com/video/9BmH2UyMjEw/video.html

    Ok...Jimmy Johnson yes , he's a great player but nowhere near the top 20 list of my favorites. I've been listening to bass players for more than 40 yrs and I love bass players who really put their heart and souls into their solos you know? I find jimmy to be cold and boring really his tone is puny and way too much signal processing... in fact, most of A Holdsworth rhythm sections sound cold and lack of fire . His tone is quiet and monotonous...I love players who play low and introverted like Steve Swallow? but the difference is with Swallow you hear how passionate and soulful he is....Jimmy Johnson and most of todays players sound like artificial intelligence playing bass, its boring man cmon..perfect technically and harmonically but so cold I just want to run to my closet and put layers on. I would say J Johnson is the begining of the boring style we have with todays so called fusion electric bass players, no charisma like Jaco, Stanley, Marcus, guys that dig in deep..... that where am I going next? kind of thing in their solos....Does Jimmy know more harmony and can play changes better than jaco? yes but give me Jaco in my rhythm section all day long or Anthony Jackson over any AI type of player w a Fodera type of bass.Cheers

      @jrosner6123 Před rokem +1

      Jackson's basses have been made by fodera for decades... Jimmy is not only equally a pioneer ( when considering Jackson's work) in extended range bass development, he is also, as Anthony Jackson himself put it " one of the finest bassists in the world ". Open your ears

    Too self-esteemed title... and imo inadequate content. Sound, harmony and articulaton feel weird and „pressured” to me.
    But maybe i simply don’t like this solo, idk 🤷🏻‍♂️
    Disclaiming this is awesome though.
