  • Culture shocks are real. I have decided to share my experiences of life in Germany as a Brit, as well as the beautiful places I am lucky enough to visit.
    My meditative videos show a calming and artistic view of the places I visit and the quiet, peaceful wanders I take through them. Medieval villages, picturesque cottages, beautiful cities. Relax and escape with me from the busy bustling world to my dreamy and serene slow living way of seeing my surroundings. Experience the magic of peering into the past and being in a fairytale, just for a little while.

    Lauren, you are a gift for our country, Nothing could be better, than when a Brit draws a picture on Germany as you do it and hopefully your fellow Britains look on us in another, hopefully a better, light. Great contribution to the British German friendship among the people, independent of history and politics. Hope to see you one day in the Mosel valley in rhineland palatinate.

    There is or was a large jade colored stone inside the Münster chapel. It had several cuts into the stone.
    I saw it there for 3 years when I lived in the beautiful cities of Ulm & Neu Ulm.
    One day my friends and I were passing by & heard a xylophone type sound. We walked in & a children's group was taking a tour. The large jade stone was actually an instrument.
    The kids were slapping their hands on it, making music.
    😳🎹🎶🧐
    We couldn't believe it & found it hilarious.
    Do you or anyone else know about this?

    Hi Lauren. I´m a Donauschwabe too and emigrated in 1985 from Romania, from a village on the Hungarian border to Franconia, Germany. Just a little supplement to your wonderfull vlog. The emigrants came from all over Western Germany and Eastern France, some even from Italy between 1750 end 1790. All had to be catholics. They were embarked in Ulm on the so called Ulmer Schachteln (rudimentary boats) and shipped on the Danube until Budapest. From here they were allotted to the settling areas, all over the Banat region, which since 1921 (Treaty of Trianon after WW I) is divided between Hungary, Serbia and Romania. The people preserved their respective original dialects, which is of course different from today´s standard German. My own family came frome Lorrain, France in 1765 and we still speak our dialect at home. Thank you for mentioning our history, because few people in Germany know about or are even interested in it. Kind regards.

    Laureen, some funny facts about Ulm. It is not too long ago, when you drove west from Ulm to Tübingen or Reutlingen along the B28, the signs in Ulm showed direction "Reutlingen", but as soon as you left the territory of Ulm, the signs changed to "Tübingen". The cities Tübingen/Reutlingen are only 10 km apart, so it is the generally same direction, but why the change?
    Well my interpretation is as follows, both Ulm and Reutlingen were formerly free cities ("freie Reichsstädte") and both were not too friendly with Württemberg. As soon as you enter the territory of Württemberg in Blaubeuren, the direction changes to the main city of Württemberg in that direction, that is Tübingen. Sometimes history has funny consequences, even nowadays.
    But too bad, the direction signs were changed some years ago.
    Have you been to the "Blautopf" - the source of the river Blau? A watermaid is living there :-) sometimes she comes up to sing at the surface!
    There is an other tongue breaker (beside the one about Ulm) about Blaubeuren - but it is in Swabian - every Swabe knows it: "S'leit a Kletzle Blei glei bei Blaubeura - glei bei Blaubeura leit a Kletzle Blei" - "Es liegt ein Klötzchen Blei gleich bei Blaubeuren - gleich bei Blaubeuren liegt ein Klötzchen Blei"
    The ships which were used by the Donauschwaben were called "Ulmer Schachteln" - "Ulm boxes".

      Jaaa... I wondered if anyone would know that about the Ulmer Schachteln. I can´t always pack everything into a video that I would like to, so I left it out. I hoped people were interested enough in the Donauschwaben to listen to as much as I said...!
      And the Blautopf is a dream ... but please, have a look at my video about Bad Urach! LOL there´s a funny story behind my visit....
      Oh, the tribal nature of the Germanic people shows in the signposts, I think! LOL

    My mothers is already born in West-Germany but her parents, my grandparents, were „Ungarndeutsche“ from the area around Bácsalmás. As a kid I never heard them calling themselves Donauschwaben. As long as they lived I only knew that they had to leave Hungary after WW2. But now afaik it‘s probably possible, that they were descendants from the first „Donauschwaben“ that came to that area. 😊
    And my grandparent‘s and also my mother‘s recipe collection were/are influenced by the Hungarian kitchen. My mother to this day makes a wonderful „Kartoffelgulasch“ without meat and just with potatoes and something called „Kartoffelsknödel“ that are made more like thick Spätzle. And of course no recipe is short of paprika. 🤤

    • @LaureninGermany
      @LaureninGermany  Před rokem +2

      Ahhh Onkel Karl who had moved back to Hungary brought regular supplies of Paprika. Can you even eat potatoes without it lol?! It’s really worth looking into your family’s history. My grandmother had her own little green house in my grandparents backyard where she grew Hungarian paprika. So there was (almost) never a shortage on paprika. 🙂 If you are interested, I can ask my mother for the recipe of „Kartoffelgulasch“. As I said it‘s without meat and afaik vegetarian or even vegan. 😊

    • @LaureninGermany
      @LaureninGermany  Před rokem +1

      @@Al69BfR Oh, I really would love that recipe! I´m vegan, and if there is butter in it, I can easily replace that with vegan butter. The Hungarians actually brought the Latin word to Bavaria that they all use for greeting: "servus". Apparently, they used it to say, I am your servant, Ihr Diener, quasi. So, I can imagine that Latin was an Amtssprache...?

    • @Al69BfR
      @Al69BfR Před rokem +2

      @@LaureninGermany My mother informed me that the recipe originally contains eggs within the Knödel dough, but you can replace that part with vegan Spätzle when you use a little bit more flour so the Knödle get a little bit stiffer so you can form little Gnocchi sized Knödel with a spoon and put them with the spoon in the boiling sauce until they fall off the spoon. For the rest you need „mehlig kochende Kartoffeln“ and the same amount of onions. Cut the onions and cook them until they are glassy. Then add water to make the sauce depending on how thick you like it, add salt and „Paprika Edelsüß“ and cook the potatoes you cut into slices within that sauce. For the „Kartoffelsknödel“ use 250g flour, half a spoon of salt and 3 eggs/egg replacement or use a recipe for vegan Spätzle with a little bit more flour.
      When the potatoes are almost done, finally add the „Kartoffelsknödel“ (Spätzle). When the Knödel appear on the surface of the water everything is right to be served. And as always you can add other spices or vegetables to your liking, but perhaps you then have to reduce the amount of water you use.
      I hope you‘ll like it as my family does. 😊🤤
