  • Its Video#38 and the March 2023 layout update for the newly named Hellifield, my N gauge layout that is undergoing a major era change from the 1960's to modern day 2020's. In this video I test the new locos and rolling stock that I have acquired over the past few months on the new Hellifield track plan. If you are not already a subscriber then please do so, please leave any comments below and if you like the video then please give it a thumbs up. Stay safe and happy modelling!! Cheers Gary at SC68

Great if the video has given you some inspiration, making the videos is mine as I knew I had to lay the track before a video could be made so it definitely a motivator! Got a few traders and manufacturers to talk to to see if I can sort some of these issues out! Take care, cheers Gary

    Brilliant video Gary. Your scenic work is of the highest quality. Great to see the track changes you've carried out. Liked the run down on your stock bought. Mind you I now know where all the Castle Cement VTG wagons have gone😅. The class 60 I was most interested in. I have the same DB liveried one. Shocking runner - no power - just crawls around the layout. Been back to Farish who say it's got new gearing in the revamped model and isn't designed to run at a fast pace. However everyone else who has these models seem to say they run fine. I have a second class 60 which is the old tooling and it runs fine. As for the IWA timber carriers. Revolution will send you new bogies as the models don't run freely. I have 4 of the wagons and on the helix test they stop on the incline rather than run freely down it. I spoke to Simon Veasy from Revolution Trains at Model Rail Scotland at the weekend and he said the wagons need complete new bogies and wheel sets and that if you contact them they will send them out if you return the originals. Cheers Euan

      @SC68  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hello Euan, where do I start? Thank you for your very kind words on my scenics but I just wing it 😂🤣. I am very pleased with the stock and managed to get it all in a few months with the money from my steam sales! Yes got lucky with the Castle Cement wagons, I got a job lot 10 for a good price from Ebay that I don't think had been out of the box!! Class 60, yes agree with your statement all 3 models are low geared, probably half speed of some other comparable locos but go fast enough I feel. All 3 are great runners and the smooth creep speed on these is superb! IWA Timber wagons, I will be contacting Revolution Trains today if I can and see what they say I have 10 of these to sort, so thanks for the tip off with this 🙌. Take Care, looking forward to seeing more of those new curves at Blackwood! Cheers Gary

    Incredible to see the transformation, Gary. I went on a bit of a spree myself recently, purchasing locos and wagons from TMC and at Model Rail Scotland. I’m not surprised, but disheartened, at your issues with the log carriers and I have seen folk on here having to cut down buffers and glue the shorter stumps back in. Unfortunately issues such as these abound N gauge output from Revolution, I will no longer spend money with them, it’s absurd having to cannibalise brand new ‘ready to run’ expensive rolling stock. My Farish 37, 60 & 66 class locos run like a dream, I have the new 158 still boxed and a Scotrail 43 set still to chip and run; the modern era locos appear more robust than the fragile running gear of the steam locos. Looking forward to seeing your next video, great work👍🏻

      Hi thank you for leaving your comment 😊 it’s great to have a spending spree I basically ploughed all the money from my steam era sales back into the modern stock! Sounds like you’ve got some nice locos the 158 is a dream of a runner! Yes very disappointed with the log wagons but so well detailed so going to stick with them and I am going to contact them to discuss the issue and hopefully they will have recommended solution!! Lots of great stuff to still do in the layout hopefully I can get some scenic work filmed for the next video as not done any for a long time! Cheers Gary

    I agree, Farish locos are of great quality these days. All the ones I've purchased have run perfectly in recent times straight out of the box.
    The GBRf wagons do make a weird sound! The graphite idea sounds good. I might try it myself as I do have some lying around somewhere. All the best. John

      Hi John or G'day mate, Glad you enjoyed the update and hopefully for the next video the viaduct scene will be finished and should look even better! Yes Farish are superb with both locos and rolling stock, the Dapol steam locos are terrible, that's 4 duff loco's out of 4 in all! Yes hopefully I can get the Revolution wagons sorted but at the prices we pay we should not see these types of issues should be ironed out before they go on sale! Cheers Gary

    Good to see the new stock Gary and the changes to the layout all of which is looking good . Generally a good outcome on the new purchases but some of the problems are more than a bit surprising. The only one I may be able to help with the is the Dapol A4. There are two very fine wires that carry the current from the pickups in the loco to the motor in the tender. It is a frankly hopeless arrangement which Dapol is going to move away from. They frequently break where the wire attaches to the connector that is screwed into the loco at one end and the tender at the other. Nearly all Dapol steamers require very gentle handling. If one or both of the wires are broken you will get bad running. Spare wires are in the accessory bag because they break so easily. I have 3 A4s as you know and they are generally good runners.On your coaches I suggest you give the Bachmann Spares and Repairs people a ring, or email them, for advice. I've had to contact them a couple of times and they've always been very helpful It's a bit odd you don't get instructions how to get into the coach to fit the lamps especially with the detail on it. The contact details are on the Bachmann website. Stephen

      @SC68  Před 4 měsíci

      Hi Stephen, thank you for the great advice as always, I will check out the A4 but what I forgot to add in the video in any detail that i also have some serious derailment issues with it going over points and 2nd Rad curves so its rendering it useless tbh!! Yes the Farish coach situation is odd and cant seem to find anything on the internet or CZcams but will give Bachmann a call now I think. Cheers Gary

The DMU looks really impressive with the lighting hopefully this will continue with the Farish updates. I'm afraid I have no idea how to get into the Pullman coaches, I think your best bet would be to have a look on the N Gauge forum site or ask the question, their are some very clever people on that site. Greetings Gary from the South Pennine Region 🌺 Having all your stock on show looks really impressive and challenges my own conception as to how long my trains should be. Like you I don’t have large space and keep my trains to one loco and five carriages. This fits the main line platform. Is it possible that you could share your new track plan with us? This would really emphasise how modern you have become. Love the reviews, maybe, just maybe you might start a CZcams revolution that the manufacturers will take note of. Great entertainment keep it coming your hard work is appreciated. 🌹👍👍👏👏😺🥃🍺

      Hello Peter fellow dweller of the red rose 🌹county! Yes I've impressed myself laying all that stock out and now worrying where it will all go as I like to leave it on the layout not keep removing it!? Its a dilemma as to how long the trains can get on your own layout before they look out of place, I think I am at my limit with 8 coaches and 8-10 length wagon rakes before it starts to look too long! Maybe people think they look too long now on my layout but when you look at the log and aggregate wagons that past through Hellifield they are far longer than the platforms at 20+ wagons long, so I just scaled it down to suit 😉. I will try to remember to share the track plan in the next video as I am tweaking gain by changing a few more set track points for medium ones now I have used them. I am actually contacting the manufacturers Revolution Trains about the Log wagons and TMC about the Dapol A4 so lets see how I get on?? Please you enjoyed and appreciate your comment about the videos as they do take some time to pull together but I do enjoy it and if others do to watching them, that's great! Cheers Gary

  • @ngaugefouroaksstreetstatio6932

    Very enjoyable Gary, i thought you would be impressed with the running of the Diesels. In terms of the A4 you need to find out if it's the motor end or the loco end. You could take out the drive shaft with a pair of tweezers so you can see if the loco end can free wheel ie the running gear is not seizing. The other thing to check the traction tyres have not stretched from oil etc. All the best.

    • @SC68
      @SC68  Před 3 měsíci

      Hi Chris, Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! The diesels are great, so far! The A4 is a lovely model but it is a terrible runner as I have found before with other Dapol steamers! I have sent the loco back now so lets see what comes of it? Cheers Gary

    Gary, Your blue GBRF Wagons sound just like my China clay ones did from EFE. The back to backs are probably to wide. Remove each axle and close the gap up to give the more play on the corners.
    As for the A4, I suggest replacing the two wires between the loco and tender. They are very delicate and break easily. I would advise leaving it on the track at all times when possible.

    • @SC68
      @SC68  Před 4 měsíci

      Hi Mark, Thank you for the advice on the GBRf wagons, I will be now checking the back to back, I have just ordered a DCC concepts tool. I will report back in the next video. I will also check out the A4's wires but it also has derailment issues that I did not go into detail on the video which also renders it useless for my layout! PS. Hi Gary, it's like several decades have suddenly gone by between videos! I see now why you said you needed to sell-off a lot of the older stuff - that's a nice modern-day fleet you've got there. The reviews are useful, and it's great to see that it's possible to get quite a high proportion of excellent stock - sorry to see just how bad that A4 is though - it seems to back what a lot of people say about steam vs diesel in British N gauge, and matches my overall experience so far.

    • @SC68
      @SC68  Před 3 měsíci

      Hi Jonathan, haha yes where did all those decades go!? Yes I did sell a lot but with ploughed the funds back into the fleet, plus a little bit more 😉! Yes it is disappointed generally the quality of N Gauge models but there does seem a real problem with Dapol steam locos from what I see from other people as well. I generally have few issues with Farish steam locos but I have tended to have to but second hand and there is so little choice of what I was after. The A4 is going back and I think it will be replaced by an alternative loco, I do not want another Dapol steamer!! Cheers Gary

    I’m not really experienced enough to help you with some of the problems you have with the loco’s and rolling stock and I see from the comments below that those that are in the know have given you plenty of advice.
    My experience so far with steam and diesel is that diesels are by far the more reliable and run better. But I do love a steam engine, there will be more on the layout as I go but I think the diesels will be the dominant force because they have less problems!

    Hi Gary. I have really enjoyed watching your layout come together and even change over time. I have one question regarding the quarry and that is around access. How would the stone be moved, is the access via the siding only or have you a road or track planned into and out of the quarry that I am missing? I look forward to seeing your videos and particularly enjoy your handling of the scenic work.

    Hi Gary! Great to see so much modern image stock running around Hellifield so soon! However, it's a sorry state of affairs when multiple manufacturers fail to ensure that their ready to run models are ready to run isn't it? I've had problems with Dapol couplings being lower than Farish and Peco couplings, which leads to them uncoupling when going up inclines! So the plan is to move all of my stock to magnetic couplings eventually! The worst problem I've had though is with my Rapido Conflat wagons, which had wheels that wouldn't turn, and was exacerbated by the fact that you couldn't remove them without removing the underside detailing from the wagon, which is all very fragile! Which reminds me, those pipes on the roof of the coaches look like they're the same as those on my Farish Pullman coaches, and I think they unclip from the roof with some very gentle persuasion! I *think*!! In other news, I've got one of the new A4's on pre-order, but have seen many people having many different problems with theirs, so I've got my fingers crossed that I'll have better luck! Good luck getting your issues fixed! Looking forward to the next update already! All the best, Ian.

      Hi Ian, Yes really pleased with the layout now and the modern stock but not so happy with some of the rolling stock! I agree that the magnetic couplings are the best and I think that will be my long term plan. I did see you video on the ConFlats and yes its so frustrating to have these issues with new RtoR rolling stock 😠. Thank for the Info on the coaches, I had sort of figured it out about the pipes as I don't see another way around it other than detaching the pipes at the top of the roof, I will be giving it a try 😉. I hope you have alot more luck that me with the A4, I have thrown the towel in and are swapping it for a Farish Black 5!! I will be doing an update in my next video on all the issues! Cheers Gary

      @@SC68 - Good luck with the pipes! The Farish 5MT is a fantastic loco, and a great runner, although the front pony truck sometimes derails going up and around the 2nd radius curves of my test track! It's like a one in a hundred time event though, and probably more to do with the track pins becoming loose in the foam and letting the track drift than the loco itself! Cheers, Ian.

    Buffer Issue ... are they hunts magnetic coupling type thing ? just buy a pack of magnets the same size and attach them in between each wagon to gain a few mm's spacing between them, using them as spacers, or purchase the longer magnetic couplings.. its evident they just don't like the tight radius.. don't hack them up, they cost too many pennies..

      @SC68  Před 4 měsíci

      Hi Thank you for your comment and what a simple but great idea! I have just looked into this and may look to purchase some. I am first looking to try and resolve this with the manufacturer and see what they recommend before doing anything else. Will update in the next video! Cheers Gary

    • @chuffinel7676
      @chuffinel7676 Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@SC68 Most welcome.. seems to be the easiest most cost effective fix. Those strong tiny magnets are very cheap on the old auction site, once fitted to each wagon just run a bit of acrylic black paint around their outer edge, will never know they were there. But even opting for longer couplings wouldn't be a loss, you can surely use the ones you remove on plank wagons and the like. Good Luck with it. You might want to re-sell them in the future so you really want to avoid chopping bits off.
