- Its the December 2023 layout update for the newly named Hellifield, my N gauge layout that is undergoing a major era change from the 1960's to modern day 2020's. See what is all about in Video#37 which runs through what I've been up to on the layout for the past few weeks since my visit to the Warley model railway exhibition. Hi Gary! well what can I say but WOW! I think this is a great move! best of both worlds! modern image does have a good scope of choice, diesels seem to be better runners in N-gauge but you can still run those kettles LOL! Once you turn your hand from scenic's to weathering, and adding a bit of graffiti to stock it will open up another level of modelling! I agree with a DMU, you need some kind of standard passenger service. When you started talking about the change, the West Coast Railway coaches instantly sprung to mind and will also give you an excuse to have a Growler or a green 47 on the back end of a steam train. I'm just imagining Euan's ears prick up at the sound of a Growler 🤣🤣🤣. But on a serious note you do right modelling what you can relate to, and we also get the bonus of watching more videos showing you scenic wizardry so win! win! . It was a wow 😮 moment for myself when I started with the change and sad to see the era 4/5 rolling stock move on but I am convinced it is the way I want to go! You make some great points about the change and are absolutely spot on with your comments!! The West Coast 37 seems a nice option now have have just received my West coast coaches 😉. Itll be a shame to see many of the steamers disappear but i agree its the only way if you want to model scenery 'as it appears'. Good luck and ill continue to follow.

Hi Stephen yes we jump forwards in time but thankfully Beaching did not ultimately get his way with Hellifield and the S&C 😊😉 Great to see your sticking around and I promise there will still be a lot of steam running just unfortunately no steam freight. All the best, cheers Gary
Gary I think I heard you say you wanted some silver Bullets, well Rail of Sheffield have two lots of three on their EBay site. They are silver but can be made dirty with Rail grime.

Quite a bold move Gary, modern image is quite interesting in the variety of stuff now, the rake of GBRf aggregate boxes do look good on a layout. I am going to 3d print the logs for my IWA wagons.
Hi Ben, thank you for your comment and yes it is quite a bold move but been building up towards it for a while! The big step was to sell off a lot of my locos and rolling stock! Really like the selection of new wagons and the Log carriers are one of my favourites now I have upgraded to the Hunt couplings! Looking forward to seeing yours with 3D printed logs!! Hi Gary - a very bold move indeed ! You'll enjoy the modern image stock as there is plenty of it about - and good quality to boot. Moving away from set track points will also be a big plus - I'd hazard a guess once you have a couple installed your thoughts will turn to perhaps changing over some others ! I see from the comments already posted that one person has decided not to follow you - I wouldn't worry there will be plenty of modern image people out there who'll take his place 😊. Hi John, yes big changes ahead but you know all about big changes my friend 😂 I am really looking forward to these changes but the steam locos will definitely be remaining and I will be adding more as well as new more detailed coaches 😊. The new diesel freight trains certainly add a new dimension to the layout and a great splash of colour and do not look out of place in the Yorkshire countryside! All the best for 2024! Cheers Gary

Just found your channel, layout looks great and that's a bit commitment swapping eras! Modern S&C will look brilliant though, and there's always room for charter trains etc even if they aren't quite realistic!

Hi Ian, yes it is a huge change but one I’ve been toying with for a while and when I went to Warley and saw all the locos and rolling stock of this era on show it was the catalyst for change! The motto of this story is that exhibitions can be extremely expensive both on the day and even you get home!! Really looking forward to cracking on modelling what I see at Hellifield and the new locos and rolling stock are superb quality!! Interesting to see how these new points perform?! Hi Mark, yes a massive change and the rolling stock is a huge undertaking but very enjoyable acquiring the new locos and rolling stock but sad to see the steam and freight locos and wagons go but unfortunately due to budget can’t do both!! All the best, cheers Gary

Hi Gary, that seems like quite a sudden turn! But the great thing about a model railway is that you can just do that, and it was interesting to hear your thought process on it. Those Colas locos in particular added a good splash of extra colour! Although I've never felt "welded" to a real situation for my modelling, and particularly not for trains, I do find it difficult deciding what to do with a fictional location - having something real that you can easily reference makes things much simpler. I've also found over the years that if I start to see something regularly on the full-size railway then I start to want a model of it! I look forward to seeing how Hellifield develops :) Merry Christmas!

Great video, Gary, and I was really interested in the story behind the transition to modern era running. I'm modelling a fictitious location in Scotland so that I could have the ability to use artistic licence in relation to architecture and rolling stock. Ultimately our layouts are personal journeys, we invest not only considerable sums of money (everything, literally everything, has become prohibitively expensive) but also huge amounts of time, and so it's important that we extract the personal joy of building and running it; you're 100% correct in doing as you are.
I was waiting for your remarks on the Revolution timber wagons, I had read about this issue on the forums when I was experiencing the hugely costly experience with the Revolution MK5 Caledonian Sleeper coaches - I won't be purchasing anything from Revolution in the future, if I want expensive ornamental static displays I can find something else.

That was very interesting Gary. Plainly you've made the right decision. There is no point carrying on with era 4/5 if you can't find the material to model Hellifield accurately; your heart simply won't be in it. Hi Stephen, your spot on with respect to finding rolling stock for the era 4/5 it’s been a slog with not much new stuff coming out these days! However the main reason is what I wanted to model and that’s a modern day Hellifield. The new locos and rolling stock do add another dimension and a great splash of colour! All the best, cheers Gary

Woah welcome to the modern world mate. 2 shout outs as well. You can't beat a mix of all sorts on the layout. You can always cut a road in from the new bridge up to the pub and have it tree lined or a small wood area and a lane coming off it to that other building. Just thoughts going through my head. It means the road from the bridge actually goes somewhere rather than just down to the siding area. Great new stock as well mate. Great idea about the road I will have to see if I can look to do that but the hill from the tunnel top to the house and bridge would be very steep so I would need to work on that! I think you have to cater your model railway to your areas of interest and develop it to your needs and personality. I myself have a thing for the steam era and am modelling my layout inspired by a real branch line near where I grew up and intend to run locos etc that actually ran on it, but, it's just the inspiration and start point. I will have no issues whatsoever pulling all the stock off and running what I see fit, if for example bargain locos etc that I like may come my way. If I modelled my railway 100% prototypical with a single line going round and round.. If it was finished, I would be bored out of my brains before lap three. The fun of this hobby is that it's your rules. I think it's going to be a great transformation and fun project. I am looking forward to your progress. Merry Xmas.
