  • The exercise company Peloton sells a stationary bike for $1,995. It’s recently exploded in popularity, surpassing even the spin giant SoulCycle in customers, data from last year suggests. Equipped with a wifi-enabled touch-screen, the bike allows you to join high-intensity spin classes remotely and, according to the company, get a studio-grade workout from anywhere.
Over the course of two weeks, Producer Benji Jones put it to the test, taking a 45-minute class every day. And to measure his progress, he did a before and after fitness assessment - which revealed some pretty surprising results.

I've done 6 months of 30-minutes Pelaton rides. AFter every other ride, I did 20 minutes of strength training. Slight change of the diet to eliminate sugar and most carbs. Tremendous results. Everyone is different, but for me, my issue was sticking to a routine and actually putting in the work. The Pelaton created the addictive habit and everything else followed. Highly recommend if you simply do the strength training after.

Correct training requires taking rest days between training sessions. This follows the general principle that exercise stresses the body, so makes you temporarily weaker, and you get stronger during recovery, i.e., when you rest. You incorrectly did the same workout every day, and therefore got the resulting fatigue and start of injury.

How many days rest in between cycling sessions do you recommend? Thanks!

    • @ilanpi
      @ilanpi Před 5 lety +96

@@tsandphotog It depends on the length and intensity of your workouts, age and fitness level. Generally speaking, short highly intense exercise should be done fully rested, so with one or two days rest. With increasing age, more rest is required. There is also "active recovery," the principle that you can recover faster if you do a very low intensity workout. If you're serious about achieving a specific goal, such as a race, then you need to consider long term training regimens such as microcycles and macrocycles. I recommend reading a book on the basic principles of exercise physiology.

I love the experience and the workouts and instructors are the best in the world I'm convinced. Monisola, because the seat will get in the way of your thighs if it's wider and if it's soft and cushy, it'll actually make it harder to gain any real benefit from spinning (your leg muscles need a firm surface for your butt to pedal efficiently) plus your back will be in agony after about 1/2 hour from lack of support.

I don’t know if I’m right but I know 40 resistance at home is easy cruising at 40 resistance in the studio was like 55 at home.

I kept putting it off because so many people would say it’s overrated and overpriced, then I realized a lot of those people were people who have never had one. So I finally went for it, and I am so glad I did. It works for me, my lifestyle, and my personality.

Peloton isn't for everyone. It's expensive, but if you use it and if you have family members that use the membership that's when it really starts to shine
I got my bike+ 3 weeks ago and have been enjoying it a bunch. $40 a month for two members of the house is a great deal. The price of the bike itself isn't bad considering a proper road bike cost $1k+ plus maintenance and gear.

There is a $39 a month subscription for the classes but it includes cycling, running, walking, yoga, cardio, meditation, etc. definitely worth it. You can share the subscription with an unlimited # of friends/family as long as only 3 people take classes at a time.
If you end up purchasing the bike you can use my referral code for $100 off accessories: J2V4D3. I’d suggest you use the discount on the shoes featured in this video ($125 so $25 with the promo code). Order a size up because they run small.

Well this is spot on (and obvious) to what I would have expected with ANY endurance sport. Cardio and Vo2 max improves at the sacrifice of muscle. That's why endurance athletes are lanky.
Being an avid cyclist outdoors and on Zwift and having done my fair share of spin classes ... it all comes downs to whatever works for you. I find Zwift more engaging and much more competitive to a spin class but Peloton is a nice set up. Unless you are absolutely time crunched or a gym is way too far, I would say a spin class at your local gym would be a good alternative (not the boutique $$$ spin gyms). If you want true performance gains that translates to outdoor gains, Zwift or Trainer Road is the way to go. Zwift is the real disruptor.. so much that professional riders are using it and it's being integrated into pro races - giro d'italia for example. They are creating an e-sport and teams like Data Dimension have competitions to scout for the next upcoming star!

There are also running, walking, yoga, outdoor, and strength training workouts that can be used to mix up the routine. This isn’t a very fair assessment of Peloton as a whole. I tend to do the power walk and running classes with strength training. At roughly 280 I find them tough but encouraging and Indo a class almost every day! I pick 1-2 days a week as rest day. Maintained a mostly healthy diet. In a week I lost 5 pounds. I’m not overly sore and have lots of energy to keep going!

And really, you were in good shape and weight to start, so it's not like you had to lose a giant belly or anything. And for me, ten years ago I returned to fitness during a winter of indoor training at a Gold's Gym and I did so by doing strings of 20- or 30-minute rides on a stationary bike, with some weights and calisthenics in between. And that, combined with a controlled diet, got me back on track with my health and I am still thankful for that. And all in all, it was fun to shed the pounds and watch DVDs on a player which I perched on a cup holder or something.

I did have knee pain at first until I got fit dialed in.
Then spring mud season was over trails opened and not only did my legs gain massive size gains my climbing ability was off the charts.
My balance was a bit rusty but the strength heart and breathing endurance was worth every penny.
I mean huge time difference’s and the ease of just pedaling made focus dialed in as well.
I will also mention this riding was mixed with squats deadlifts and leg presses which was my normal yearly routine.

I would be curious to see if you gain any strength by using the peloton strength classes. Like maybe bike every other day and then the days you don’t bike do the strength workouts and see what happens!

I did a VO2 Max when I was doing my stress test for my cardiologist and the first time I did the treadmill but the second time I did the bike and I was doing good. I try to stay active and eat healthy and when I did my last stress test I did pretty well than the first stress test. But I still miss going to the gym. I just don’t think with the coronavirus wreaking havoc in my area, I rather not chance myself getting COVID

It wasnt sponsored by anybody, otherwise they legally wouldve had to say it in the video. At the end of the video, though, the guy did hint to being paid a lot of money for completing the challenge
