Mayrhofen is a large, attractive, traditional village in the scenic Ziller Valley or ‘Zillertal’
as it’s locally known, nestled in the heart of the Austrian region of Tyrol.
It's one of the biggest names in Austrian mountain tourism and is a longstanding
favourite with Brits.
In this video we will show you the most important things you need to know before
booking a vacation in Mayrhofen and if you stick around until the end of the video, you
will get some great tips which will help you make better decisions, save time and
money and have a more enjoyable vacation.
The closest airports to Mayrhofen are Innsbruck, with transfer time of one hour and
Salzburg or Munich, with a transfer time of two hours each. Take note that during the
month of February there are big traffic jams on Saturdays from Munich and Salzburg to
Mayrhofen and back.
You can buy a train ticket to Mayrhofen at Munich Airport, with changes at Munich
central station, Kufstein and finally at Jenbach for a local Zillertalbahn connection.
A round-trip ticket is likely to cost between sixty and one hundred and twenty euros.
As the main transport hub of the valley, the Mayrhofen railway station is served by a
local bus service to the village, while buses also run through the valley on an hourly
basis.
Mayrhofen ski has a long season beginning in early December, lasting right though to
late April. The ski area of Mayrhofen spans from six hundred and thirty meters above
sea level to two thousand five hundred meter above sea level. Interestingly, however,
with the exception of one red run that descends from Ahorn plateau down into town,
the ski area elevation ranging between one thousand five hundred, and two thousand
five hundred meters.
Many of the slopes are south-facing which can be good in the middle of winter,
however the lower altitude south-facing runs can be problematic in milder March, but
we’ll address the solution to that later in the video.
The ski area of Mayrhofen itself has one hundred and thirty seven kilometres of ski
runs. But when combined with the Superzillertal skipass for the whole Zillertal area, it
boasts a huge five hundred and thirty five kilometres of ski runs for your enjoyment,
making the Zillertal valley the valley with most ski runs in the whole of Austria.
from the five hundred and thirty five kilometres of the Zillertal, one hundred and sixteen are
spereated to small areas you won't bother to try. we recommend on four ski areas with a total of
four hundreds and nineteen km:
The Zillertal Arena, featuring a huge one hundred and forty three connected ski runs, is
the largest single ski area, and here’s how to get there from Mayrhofen.
From Mayrhofen you can take the Zillertalbahn to Zell am Ziller and then the red line
ski bus to Rosenalmnahn lift in order to explore the Zillertal Arena, with a journey time of
twenty minutes.
The second ski area, with ninety one kilometres of connected ski runs is Ski Optimal.
From Mayrhofen, you can take the Zillertalbahn to Kaltenbach and then walk five
minutes to HochZillertal gondola to explore Ski Optimal. The total journey time is just
thirty minutes.
The third ski area is the Hintertux, with sixty kilometres of runs, and a glacier where you
can ski up to three thousand two hundred and fifty meters above sea level. To get
there, you should take the green line bus from the Zillertalbahn station, a drive that will
take around forty minutes.
The last big ski area in the Zillertal is, of course, the main ski area of Mayrhofen itself,
with one hundred and twenty five kilometres of ski runs.
Overall, the Mayrhofen ski area is divided into two distinct areas, and comprised of
thirteen black runs, twenty seven red runs and fifteen blue runs.
The first ski area is Ahorn, aka Ahorn plateau, home to a total of twelve kilometres of
slops, and connected to the center by the Ahorn cable car. Ahorn features several easy
blue runs on the plateau and a long red run back to the center.
The second, also known as the Penken, is connected to the center by the Penkenbahn,
and consists of one hundred and twenty five kilometres of slopes.
It’s actually home to four mountains: Horberg, Rastkogel, eggalm, and Penken
the Penken; Horberg; Rastkogel, and Eggalm
Experts can test their limits and try the Harakiri, the steepest piste in Austria. This piste
runs at an incline of up to seventy eight degrees.
Freestylers can find one of Europe best snow parks here, too: Vans Penken Park.
There is a traditional high level of teaching standards in Mayrhofen. Almost all of the
instructors speak English and pride themselves on injecting plenty of fun into their
lessons. There are plenty of ski schools to choose from here, and at good prices too.

Thank you for doing this video, your videos really helped us in choosing where to go this year, Mayrhofen! One contender which has barely any reviews online is that of the Sauze D'oulx region.
Flims-Laax-Falera and Les Deux Alpes
Went here in 1981. Sunniest ski holiday I ever had, with great skiing each day. Returned 2 years later. Must go again - great high street and Pub back then.
It's the only ski Holiday I have ever had and it was 34 years ago on my 40th birthday that I was there. I remember it was in March I was there and I had a fantastic time. I thought it was a magic place
I stayed in Mayrhofen in 2013. I had purchased a train pass to get there but ran into a friendly woman who offered to drive me. I had no idea there were such friendly open people. I believe I stayed at Pension Martha. Friendly people there too!
Mayrhofen is absolutely 10 !!!
After 5 years of Westendorf, booked the first time in Mayrhofen. Can't wait until January 🙂 Thank you for the informative video
Our pleasure Peter! have fun in Mayrhofen!😘
best review ever on this resorts and the Zillertal . great tips
Thanks. I really love your videos!
Love this channel 😍❤
great place!
Amazing 👍
Had our fifth trip to Mayrhofen in January 2020. Mayrhofen offers relatively good value for money and great skiing with most pistes above 1500m. Recommend staying near to train station so you can also ski the other Ziller Valley resorts including Zell am Ziller, Kaltenbach and Hintertux.
I have free product for review
GREAT VIDEO!!! Thank you!
Looks like an amazing place, hopefully, I can get to ski here one day :).
7 times there since 2008. There is no US resort area that comes close. Easy to get to, skiing is cheap for Americans, food and drink are very cheap, for Americans. Lodging is about average. In the many apartments around town, about 100 Euro per person per night seemed pretty common. Excellent bus service.
Thanks for the tips for the Americans!
My pleasure! Mulling over another trip next year.
Nice place for skiing holiday.
It really is, Alex! i agree
The Harakiri runs up to 78%, not degrees. A 78 degree slope is effectively a cliff drop
that's what i thought. Sounded not right
when we were at Mayrhofen we did drunk toboggan riding at night, it was a realy fun experiance!
and also we were rocking it pretty hard in scottie after leaving the ice bar at night, so not so calm!
Oh wow you are so hardcore
Include Ramsau, Zell am Ziller, Kaltenbach, Fugen, Gerlos, are great places to ski in the Ziller valley.
You're killin' me with this stuff! Stop! I can't take it, I don't have the money.
Me too 😔
@@janeeden919 Sad stories 😭
Been there, great place! Try Harakiri, after some snowfall, otherwise it's very icy 😉
I was about to, got as far as the lift up. But then I saw a skier coming down on his face, with all he stuff going everywhere... So I thought naaaaaaaaaaah. 😳🙈.
yes and sometimes it is not open at all.
Here we are)) 2020 is our time for rest!!!
I'll be there in march, staying at Finkenberg. So to get to Kaltenbach it might be a longer transit: bus to Mayrhofen + train to Kaltenbach
Yes, but don’t miss Kaltenbach.
Kaltenbach has some great skiing and is only about 20 mins or so from Finkenburg.
I was meant to leave this morning to go strass hotel sadly corona made are holiday and everyone else’s cancelled 2021 here we come 😭🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

You forgot to present Après-Ski Hohenhouse Tenne. It is in Hintertux. It is the best, music, atmosphere and drinks...
Thank you for the tip! The review was focused on Mayrhofen so we didn't get into the other apres ski bars in the Zillertal, but we will definitely check it out next time we will be in the area.
Очень интересно!

If you’re going to ski harikiri do not close eyes or you will wake up in the hospital.
Don’t miss the White Lounge at Ahorn, a giant outdoor igloo bar.
Surprised you recommend Hintertux when weather is bad !! Conditons on top of Hintertux in bad weather can be ferocious and sometimes the upper lift to top is closed. The winds can very strong and I have been there with temperatures as low as -20 !! I spent most of one day in the Sommerberg restaurant want for weather to break and lift to run, but it didnt. Worth mentioning also that the main first descent from the top of Hintertux is a a steep red which can be very icy when the wind blows the snow cover off the glacier below. It can of course be gloriously sunny up there and I have skied there as early as first week of October so for anyone looking for a few days skiing in autumn, or early summer then it is worth a visit. In Winter, skiers can ski from Maryhofen across and down into Lanersbach and then catch the Mayrhoffen Bus up to Hintertux. This reduces the bus time to Hintertux by more than half and with good snow you can ski right down to Lanersbach village or to Tux.
hi amblincork,
The times we recommend to go to Hintertux is when there are sometimes low clouds, fogy, or rains, and in Hintertux you can ski above the clouds. other times are in the end of season in warm days.
I agree that because of the high altitude etc' the weather there can be harsh many times.
@@SkiResortsVideo But when there are low clouds in Mayrhofen, when you get to the top of the Ahorn or Penken, you will also be above the clouds. You are offering not the best of information sometimes. I was a ski instructor in Mayrhofen from 1969 to the very late 70s and lived there for many years, so know like a local.
Going there in 2.5 weeks from now, very excited
May I ask, what do you mean no skiing back to town? How do you get back to Mayrhofen then?
In Bansko for example you can ski all the way down to the main entrance
You'll need to take the Penken lift back. There's a black that runs from Ahorn down to village level but it's a trek (or a bus) back to town. In poor snow the black is a PITA... probably literally!
Can you also review ischgl or Saalbach Hinterglemm

😅
Hey! Are you going to show us Verbier?
maybe to film it in March and upload in the end of the year
I’m booked for Mayrhofen 30th January 2021, it’s now New Year’s Eve......I don’t think I’ll get to visit the way the world is at the moment. We get told on the 20th of January if we still have our holiday, I’m really doubting it now
Hi Pete, Did you go?
@@SkiResortsVideo hello, this is a very late reply! No we never got to go unfortunately, we got all of our money back and are currently booked for Canada mid January 2022
Do a video on Borovets, Bulgaria or Valfrejus
hi Andrija,
we will take into account.
why you are interested in these resorts?
@@SkiResortsVideo Couple of friend's recommended those resorts and i can't find any good videos online for them. I've been subrscribed to the channel for some time and i know that you would make a great review
i’m in mayrhofen rn
Not sure how Val Thorens gets a 10 for apres ski, but Mayrhofen gets 8.5. Those scores need swapping around.
hi Jonny,
there is a point in your comment, and maybe in the end of February it's better in Mayrhofen, but in most of the rest of the season it is better in Val Thorens. in respective we wouldn't give a 10 to Val Thorens, but the fact that all january and march it is good there in that respect, and most of December and April is significant/ the video of mayrhofen was filmed in the end of February while the one of val thorens in mid April. the score is based on years of observation of the 2 resorts along whole seasons. if you will come to Val thorens in January you won't believe how good is the apres ski there
Val Thorens has nothing to do with après-ski at all. Music is shitty and the beer is way too expensive. Almost 7€/beer is just absolutely nuts.
@@SkiResortsVideo honestly you can't really call Val Thorens aprés-ski
At 5:07, it is 78% NOT 78 degree. i.e. 78% of 45 degree.
haha, I thought that was bloody steep
@@l.s.3066 Norman is right, its 78% of 45 degrees. 78 degree would be like falling down a cliff. It's on the page linked, "around 38 degrees". www.thebmc.co.uk/europes-5-hardest-ski-black-runs
You are right, that it is 78%, but it is equal to around 38 degrees.
But still blody dam steep
@@yorbenvannoten2374 ,yes it is.
Next year visa:)
It's not 78 DEGREES!! that's 78% Grade. Equivalent to 38 degrees. Still steep. But they're are steeper in Europe.
Thanks I was confused
Just came back from there wth
zillertalbahn is free with a skipass
What is red line ?
A bus
Can u do morzine
we will take it into consideration, James. many people asked for it

not in our plans for now, sorry, but we took a note
@@SkiResortsVideo ok
Leider liegt es nicht hoch genug mit seinen 633 Metern - bietet keine Schneesicherheit (wie zum Beispiel Nauders oder Obertauern)!
Well, with that said, you really don't have to worry about the snow in a good winter at Mayrhofen anyway. Plus, when there is poor snow in the village of other resort that allow you ski all the way to them, they would have no snow either, therefore, are no different to Mayrhofen. Just take the cable car down at the end of the day's skiing and enjoy the great runs and snow on top of the mountain. You are being far too critical about almost nothing.
5:05: the groomers are out.
st. anton or ischgl are more popular in austria
At Anton was overrated IMO 😶. As a snowboarder, Lech was much better for me.
But the snow was great in the whole Arlberg area 👍.
They are great resorts but FAR MORE EXPENSIVE than anything in the Zillertal plus take far longer to get to. They are great resorts but overrated. I know them well, I was a ski instructor in Mayrhofen for many years and have skied just about all the resorts in Austria, so I speak from experience, not from what is printed in guidebooks or resort pamphlets. For probably 90% of the people, the skiing offered in Mayrhofen and the Zillertal will more than satisfy ever need. So, save a ton of money and transfer time from an airport and don't go to St. Anton or Lech or Zurs.
78 degrees? Haha. I dont think this guy knows geometry. That is basically a vertical wall. Your skis lose edge at plus 60 degrees
It’s an extremely steep slope I don’t think it’s that steep but that’s what they advertise it at
He made a mistake. It is 78 percent and not 78 degrees.
If you’ve been there you’d know that it pretty much is vertical a points
@@actiontrax7434 As has been pointed out several times in the comments, 78 degrees was a mistake in the video. It is 78% (which is atan(0.78)=0.662rad=38 degrees)
@@berndf0 yes I know that and that is the average gradient of the run so as I said it is near vertical in places
its mayrhofen, not mayrhofn
5:06 for fuck sake bro its 78% incline which equals 38 measured in degrees which is a massive difference
thanks, bro,
that's the problem a none native English speaker creator sometimes encounter😬❤⛷
Calm down lad
Tilted still shot on video profile proves this is clickbait.🤬
It is a frame from the video. I admit that once I tried to experiment and change something in my thumbnails. most of the thumbnails I see in channels are more altered. do you comment negatively on all of these thumbnails they used images, not from the video? we work hard to give to the community of skiers and don't ask for anything. If you will look at my other thumbnails, all of them are frames from the video. none altered.
I consider any thumbnail that emphasizes topics in the video, legit.❤
You guys really need to learn how to correctly pronounce many of the words you used in this video. You also need to know more about what you are speaking of. It is not "The Hintertux", the village and mountain is called Hintertux. It would be like say "The Mayrhofen". Not too bad of a video but it needs a lot of work to make it good. I lived in Mayrhofen for more than ten years and was a ski instructor right through the 70s, so of course, know it like the back of my hand.
stupid! a guide about Mayrhofen that explains how to go from there to other resorts 🤯
dear Stefan. when you come to Mayrhofen for a week vacation, you can ski in the whole valley. so why don't ski there as well?
There is a greenbus line, it is free if you have skipass.
