Beef Chow Ho Fun | How YOU Can Make Restaurant Quality Beef Chow Fun

- You may have all the beef chow fun ingredients at home. But if you don't cook beef chow fun right it will not taste the same as your favorite Chinese restaurant. I'll show you one simple cooking tip that will elevate your chow fun noodles to Chinese takeaway restaurant level.
I have fond memories of eating beef chow fun in NYC's Chinatown. I remember it was super tasty and satisfying. I also remember it was a pricy dish. In NYC beef chow fun these days cost around $10USD.
Which I'd gladly pay for if there is a restaurant selling beef chow fun around my neighborhood in Bangkok. But, it doesn't exist here in Thailand.
So I made it a mission to cook one up myself. All the ingredients can be found at my local wet/dry market.
This recipe and technique is as close as I'll ever get to the classic beef chow fun!

---------------------------------------------
Ingredients:
Makes 1 to 2 servings
500 grams flat rice noodles (ho fun)
1½ cup bean sprouts
2 stems Chinese chives
¼ yellow onion
For beef marinade:
150 grams topside beef
1 tablespoon soy sauce
2 teaspoon Chinese cooking wine
1 teaspoon pure sesame oil
Dash of ground white pepper
½ teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon cornflour (a.k.a. cornstarch)
2 tablespoon water
1 tablespoon oil
Let beef marinade for 5 minutes.
Finishing sauce:
2 tablespoon light soy sauce
1 tablespoon dark soy sauce
1 tablespoon oyster sauce
Cooking instructions:
Add 1 tablespoon vegetable oil to hot pan on medium high heat. Add beef and cook until medium rare. Remove and set aside.
This is where we start cooking the noodles. You need to have a high a heat as possible. Gather all your ingredients get ready to add them as the cooking should be fast.
Add a tablespoon of oil followed by the noodles. Move the noodles around so it won't burn. Some of your noodles will develop brown and black marks and shrink a little. Cook for another minute then add the onions and bean sprouts.
Continue cooking for another minute or so until the onions start to look transparent. Add finishing sauce and then beef. Continue stirring until all the ingredients are coated with the sauce. Then throw in Chinese Chives and cook for another minute.
Dish and enjoy!

Pro Tip: If your kitchen stove or electric induction stove can't get hot enough to achieve "wok hei" just turn it up as high as you can and cook the ho fun noodles longer as needed.
@@xuedalong Which part of China?? Also which village, township or province?
@@xuedalong That depends on which Chinese language you use!
@@xuedalong Cantonese is spoken in Guangdong and Guangxi, too. Among other places. Certainly not only in Hong Kong. That said, it is very much a minority language in China.
Just remember that 99% of Chinese people cook on the same kitchen stoves or induction stoves and don't even think about 'wok hei'. That's a peculiarly American obsession!
I saw some videos that they use blow torch to mimick the wok hey or the burnt bits
Your easy and comfortable mannerism of speaking to your audience and explaining the techniques of using high heat to get that authentic Chinese flavour is priceless thank you 🙏🏼 god bless
Thank you Larry 😀
Loved how you explained everything the way you did. Really good job.
Thank you so much! My family love beef chow fun but no matter how many times I made this I could never make it taste restaurant style. Until you told me about using high heat. Fortunately we do have a strong fire on a stove, not as strong as restaurants but good enough. All this time I was gently cooking my chow fun in medium heat. When I switched on high heat I finally reached restaurant quality.
This looks amazing!! Great recipe!
I come back to this video all the time. FORGET ALL THE OTHER VIDEOS..THIS IS 10000%LEGITIMATE. HE DID THIS DISH COMPLETE JUSTICE.

You are an absolute 🌟 Wally!! I love the way you also give prices. 🙏
Thank you Wally. Your recipe for chow fun is the best!!! It produces the most authentic chow fun complete with the burnt smell like the ones from my favorite restaurants. The beef cooked this way is so tender. Others may produce slick videos but yours is authentic and down home genuine. Thumbs up.

Awesome, looks delicious. Reminds me of mongolian beef with chow fun noodles o used to eat in Chicago's China town.
Hey Mark, how’s it going? Three words... Italian Beef Sandwich... I could eat that all day long in Chicago 😋 Thanks for watching and commenting. Take care and be healthy ✌️
Tooo good
My favorite beef chow fan
Wow my ultime favourite 🤩
Enjoy!
Thank you for explaining the char flavor!
Yes Helen, that is the key, charring the noodles 😀 A lot folks make the mistake of using a lower heat, thus steaming the noodles which is not what to do. Thank you for watching and commenting on my videos I appreciate it, take care Helen!
Wow! Watching from Brisbane, Qld. That was easy to follow n will definitely give it a go. Thank you Wally for sharing.
Thank you and enjoy! 😀

Thank you! But I think I’m just so so 😃
@@WallyCooksEverything I was an instructor before I retired and I know someone with that particular talent. If you taught for a living, you would be good at it...
Thank you very much! I try my best. And I hope you are enjoying your retirement 😀

Wow! That looks great! Best video on making beef chow fun. I loved how you explained everything. Can't wait to check out your other videos :o)
Thank you Kelly! But don’t bother watching my other videos. It’s all downhill after this one 🙃 Thank you for commenting, stay safe and healthy 😄
You have the perfect wok setup to prepare restaurant quality Chinese stir fry dishes.👍
The wet noodle version (in garlic pepper sauce) is equally tasty except messier and must be eaten fresh out of the wok.
I forgot to congratulate you and your wife for your new addition to your family...CONGRATS!!😊
Thank you so much!!
I'm so sad my electric stove could not help me achieve the breath of the dragon😭😭
Don’t be sad Apple 😂 many homes don’t have it either. I would think it be dangerous too. Probably have more house kitchen fires than usual 😆
I like to have fun...Chow Fun!!!!
You’re one “fun”ny guy Andrej! 😂😂
I actually followed this receipe the other day.. It was amazing... I no longer go to a restaurant for great chow fun... Thank you
Thanks Gabe! Give yourself some credit you did the work and you made it turn out tasty 👍 Have a happy and healthy New Years! ❤️🥳
Thanks
This is hands-down the best beef chow fun recipe/video. I've made beef chow fun a lot of times unsuccessfully but this recipe from Wally using his tips is no-fail. I've made his recipe about 4 times and it gets better every time!!!
Hello Emily, give yourself some credit you did the cooking, so you made this dish taste good 😀 Thank you for watching and commenting ✌️
Thanks Wally!! I think your video provided me with a really good foundation. I made your lemongrass chicken for dinner. It turned out delicious, I think I might try grilling it next time.
Are you going to make any new videos? Would love to see a beef cheong fun/dimsum beef ball video.
@@EmilyKSD yeah I’ll be working on those 2 dim sum dishes hopefully soon. I just have to find the right beef. Finding quality beef in Thailand is a bit of a challenge, price wise also. Thanks for taking interest in my videos and suggestion 👍
Great video. Yes, in Thailand some Chinese dishes are locally modified so its good to make your own.
I also enjoy Thai food a lot 😄 Sometimes I just miss the food I ate while growing up in NYC so I make it at home 😄
Tq Wally, always loved beef Chow ho fan. Now that I hv just retired, I will cook up your storm!
Hey Jerry, enjoy your retirement! ✌️
You're a great teacher.
Hi Danielle, thanks for saying so 😆 I think I'm just okay at it 😁 Thank you for watching and commenting 🙏
@@WallyCooksEverything I like how you explain the reason why.
Thanks!
Thank you so much Linda ❤️🙏
@@WallyCooksEverything When will the book arrive?
Thanks buddy 👍😎😜🤓
How’s it going Colin? Thank you for watching and commenting 👍
Thank you again for uploading this video clip looks awesome.😣 how I missed NYC,and China Town is the best. When I do go back to visit family and friends. I make a point we all go there for Peking duck 😋.Thanks again Florida USA 😊Rainbow 🌈Chef 😊👍keep up the great work 🙏🙏
Hi David, how's it going? 😀 I just went back to NYC last March and the Chinatown has certainly changed. I think for food the Chinatown in Flushing Queens is better today.
First time on the channel. Great video. I will be back for sure.
Thanks for watching James 👍
I really enjoyed your video on Peking Pork chops and this one. It's actually two of my favorite dishes. Your video described the recipe in a way I can easily understand. It's kinda ironic on my part that I'm living in NYC wanting to learn to cook NYC chinese cuisine, and I did it by finding a youtube video from a guy who lives in thailand who have fond memories of NYC.
Hi Mochi 😃 Yeah I certainly miss the foods in NYC. But not so much the winter 🥶
@@WallyCooksEverything haha yea the NYC winters are a bit rough. Btw, Hop Kee is still there in case you’re curious. Their scallion pan-fried bluepoint crabs is my go-to comfort food.
I tried your salt and pepper pork chop recipe, and adapted it to also make peking pork chop. Your recipe was delicious and both came out very crispy. Thanks. I’ll be making it again for my family thanksgiving. I’m definitely taking credit 😄
Hi Wally, found your channel been watching your recipes and saving them..sometimes im just tired of my own cooking and wanted to learn other technique and flavors 😊
Hi Filchi 😃 Awww thank you very much for taking the time to watch my videos. I really appreciate it ❤️
@@WallyCooksEverything Your welcome, keep it up 😊
"What that means, I don't know"...🤣😂🤣😂🤣 love it
Just the first words out of my mouth. Didn't know what else to say 😆😂
Yeah man !!
i have to say your Beef Chow Ho Fun looks delicious nice job.
