  • *A note*
I have been reading the comments in the video and I want to clarify something that I may not have been too clear about. I do not, by any measure, equate homosexuality to pedophilia; that was not the intent of what I was attempting to communicate. What I mean to equate, and what I do believe I clarify in the video with my contentions outlying the two, is the similarities on their journies to vice. When I juxtapose Riz's consumption of Tem in Beastars to Aschenbach's predatory activity around Tadzio, I am not calling Riz a pedophile nor am I saying that all gay men are pedophiles (I am very much aware of that harmful stereotype). I am instead comparing the paths they took to committing equally base actions. When Mann writes Aschenbach, he clarifies that, at first, he has a separate attraction to the masculine aethstetic. It is when he realizes that it is not an aethstetic appreciation of masculinity but an attraction -- not to minors, but to men in general -- that he does not know how to react properly and thus misplaces this realization with volitionally preying on a child. I am not saying that Aschenbach is gay/bi and ergo a pedophile. I am saying that he realizes he's gay/bi but mistakes his sexuality for pedophilia/misplaces it onto Tadzio voluntarily out of confusion because he cannot properly process this newfound, self-truth bomb. Thomas Mann makes this distinction in Death in Venice far clearer than I could ever eloquate. I say the same for Riz: he realizes his attraction for Tem through a longing for male companionship but (potentially) mistakes it for predatory instincts. Like Aschenbach, he does not understand nor can he come to process this realization properly, and thus caves to what he believes to be predatory instincts. This does not mean that this was an act of pedophilia, nor does it assume that Riz (and all gay/bi men alike) are pedophiles. It just draws parallels between two characters that experience a corruption arc when failing to process internal emotions and aesthetics; the thesis does not ever state nor intends to insinuate such an abhorrent and backwards position apropos the LGBTQIA+ community, specifically gay/bi men. I hope this clears things up and I am sorry for the potential confusion.
A character analysis juxtaposing Riz’s descent to that of Gustav von Aschenbach - the main character of Thomas Mann’s novelette, Death in Venice - to illustrate his corrupted expression of suppressed emotional feelings and his sexuality.

From the first moment Tem told Riz he was scary, the bear fell head over heals for him. I believe the real reason Riz really didn't take his pills that night was to impress Tem. Noticed the quotes. Tem-Riz, you seem kinda off; your body looks swollen."
    Riz-"You noticed?"
The bear says this enthusiastically. So I think Riz wanted more than friendship, but he went about it too quickly and drastically with not taking his pills. Sometimes, being subtle is the more safer option.

I think the whole Riz Tem eating ordeal was just a fabrication of Riz's mind. He held Tem as a concept, an ideal and not as a real person. That's why he says they are still friends. Tem didn't want to die, in the moment of fright he called him and all carnivores monsters, what he truly felt at that moment. That was the real Tem, he was scared to die, he did not accept his death and even if he did, he did it out of suicide because he knew he couldn't escape a bear, that there was no chance of survival. I believe either Riz fabricated the whole "i accept you for who you are A.K.A eat me" so he wouldn't have to deal with the trauma or Tem said it in a suicide attempt as i mentioned.
But yknow what. This is the same anime where a wolf constantly wants a bear dead but just stops hating him the moment the bear asks for a break because either he wants to talk some BS or because they chose the worst place to kill each other ever. So he might have aswell actually wanted him to eat him. Beastars wasn't actually that realistic emotion-wise in this part of the series.
Edit: Riz was the perfect psychopath character. He felt like he was right in what he did and he was portrayed as such, he was portrayed as calm, collected, kind and mature, while Legoshi was portrayed as impusive, juvenile, and immature for wanting to bring justice for Tem. He was basically the pink dress wearing villain from Harry Potter, the one more hated than Voldemort. They are both portrayed as if they are right, because they believe so, and the other characters agree with them because they haven't seen the psychopath's crimes. But they are not. Remember, just because someone is calm, doesn't mean they're right. Remember that GET OUT OF MY CAR NOW, video? The woman was calm, but she was actually teasing him the whole ride and cancelled the ride the last minute before arriving, so the driver wouldn't notice and she wouldn't have to pay. She knew exactly what she was doing, she purposely made the driver mad through the ride only to catch the moment he snapped on video, in order to make her look like the victim. That's what Riz does.

  • @phirerising
    @phirerising Před 3 lety +447

Beastars does state that predatory instincts are treated very similar to sexual feelings, with Legoshi training to control himself so he doesn't devour Haru, his love interest. In the Manga, this is also seen with Airdo a lion, going out with a rabbit. She ends up in the hospital, after he attacks her when going for a kiss. So, all of this to say, Riz was definitely into Tem in more ways than one. It's possible he developed feelings for Tem, and became somewhat obsessed with him- so obsessed he felt he couldn't hide himself nor should he have to. After all, he and Tem shared a special relationship right? So, it would honestly make perfect sense for Riz to be gay or Bi, and having that contribute to why Tem died. Riz views it as an act of love, and twisted as it is, we're told by gouhin in earlier episodes/chapters that this isn't uncommon.

That’s not actually a bad assessment of what happened. One small point Riz at the end of his and Legosi’s fight admits to idealizing Tem’s final moments. Tem was the one animal Riz wanted to be closest too. He wanted Tem to truly understand him, and the guilt of devouring Tem drove Riz kind of crazy. The reality of Tem’s last moment is Tem died alone, scared, and fighting for his life. We know this because in the shower fight scene Riz says that there was blood and signs of a violent struggle. His body was bruised and battered.
Riz is most like one of 4 homosexual characters in the Beastars manga.

There's also evidence in sentences like "I'm happy I decided to remember Tem's death as a good memory" meaning that he willingly decided to believe that Tem was happy with him getting eaten by Riz.
So this is a really good take on how things turned out and I totally believe it, after all Legoshi says: "he's right we're not so different I would've eaten Haru, because of the strong love I feel for her, if I hadn't gotten help".

Frankly to speak it's hard to have a Bear as Boyfriend in Beastars world. First of all the series don't seems to show a female bear in Cherryton School, only male bear Riz and his Roommate. So the option much likely an interspecies love. Bear in Beastars are the largest carnivore with the average of more than 2 m in their 17 and Riz is the same like Legoshi that have unnatural growth (This world mostly use human height scaling, with Louis around 1.7 m). Not to mention Riz doesn't seems to have problem with same gender interest since he barely make friends and obviously a close one. Given a concept of Bear depicted as Monster because the growth of their muscle mass. A standard panther capable of ripping a herbivore so you can expect just how easy a bear to rip herbivore arm as if it was a paper. That's why Bear who pass 2 m have to go through restraining pill to suppress their muscle mass. So it's easy to understand why Bear have a hard time get a close friend. The risk of being rip apart not worth to start a friendship as the society would think. And after become close with Tem, Riz being obsessed and doesn't want to let Tem go away as he can't guarantee he will get another one like Tem. This is the where he messed up, he should back off a little after wounding Tem. Try to convince Tem that he means no harm and be more patience. Tem would understand because he is friendly one who can understand as he does when knowing how monsterous is Riz

That he’s not stupid and on some level realizes that, just that now they can be together forever now that he’s eaten him, he doesn’t want to be his last memory. Many carnivores do this when they end up eating someone, where they don’t remember (or dont want to remember) and instead fabricate some other event in their mind.

While it is an interesting take to have, I don’t believe the parallels really work between the two fictions. The core foundations of the character’s motivations were completely different. Aschenbach’s obsession for Tadzio was based on his admiration for his physical appearance. Where Riz’s obsession was for to have someone understand him for who he was. Riz wanted self validation, himself to be understood. Aschenbach lusted after someone for their superficial appearance. The only parallel that was present was the fact that either predator character had an obsession at all that resulted in some form of madness. You could also argue that the size difference between Riz and Tem could have been symbolism for the dynamic of the adult Aschenbach and Tadzio, but it is a fairly thin comparison. Aschenbach’s obsession never resulted in his death. His dying was just happenstance, while Tem’s death was directly in relation to Riz’s obsession.
Aschenbach desired the superficial exterior of another.
Riz desired acceptance for his non superficial interior

This video is a wonderful assessment! It pleases me to see someone actually take the time to go over Riz's character and motivation like whilst embracing the high possibility he acted out of attraction for Tem. It's something we could use more of tbh- it feels like a big part of his character!
(Spoilers from the manga, anime only's be aware)
I feel like this could further be supported by his new relationship with Pina. It's much more subtle, but learning that Pina comes to him twice a month in juvi, and Pina considers him his "first male friend" while wanting to know how he should look to Riz, (asking him if he should let his fur grow out or have it cut) etc., feels like a implied symbolism for Riz to start a new.
He's found a new partner, a herbivore who's fully aware of what he is and what he's done, and yet still accepts him for who he is just like he wanted Tem to do.
    It's quite sweet actually ^^

I don't know to what degree I agree with you, but I wanted to say that the "tender moment" they share before riz eats tem I believe was something he made up in his mind. He hallucinated Tem saying these things because its what he wanted to believe, but he even admits himself that deep down he knew it wasn't a true friendship. It shows what tem actually said: he called him a monster, and cowered in terror. This wasn't what riz wanted, he wanted to remember this fantasy relationship he'd curated while they spent time together. The only way he felt he could do that was to commit the most "intimate" act of predation, so that he would always 'carry tem with him', so they'd always be 'close', ending the relationship while it still felt good for Riz. That's just how i interpreted it though.

  •  Před 2 lety +1

I don't *fully* agree but I can definitely appreciate your argument and it does make a lot of sense to an extent. This was a good analysis but my only personal correction, besides Riz suppressing his true memories of how Tem died (as others have also pointed out) is that Riz's medication was to cause muscle atrophy because of his height. It was to suppress his strength rather than his instincts. Honestly I feel like it began as desperately wanting Tem to talk with him as his true self that led to Riz chasing him, the smell of blood, a cornered prey and Tem's words combined that caused him to lose himself long enough to do irreversible damage. It hurt so much to read and watch...

this kind of also reflects the movie Ichi the Killer which is one of the most disturbing yet also surprisingly funny movies I’ve ever seen? Idk if I’d recommend it but the styling is impeccable and some of the filmmaking is very interesting. The title character of the movie gets off to horrible violence and is very emotionally unstable and was programmed to be a killing machine after having been in an accident which caused him a lot of brain damage. Ichi is very unstable and is very pent up like Riz, but has an even harder time coming off as a normal person. There is another character who is more the main character I’d say who takes just as much pleasure in violence but has a sort of masochistic relationship to it and is very open and flamboyant with his style and personality. Ichi is hunting down the remnants of this out and proud characters gang while this character is hoping for the ultimate showdown between himself and ichi. He wants the pain that ichi will bring, but also wants revenge on him for killing so many of his fellow gang members. It’s a really wild movie

  • @AnonDudeBro
    @AnonDudeBro Před 2 lety +4

I think something about the whole situation that’s interesting to consider is whenever Riz talks about Tem & that night, he explains that it “made up his adolescence.” (In the English dub he explains it as “his precious youth.”
Riz talks about killing, fantasizing, and eating Tem the exact same way adults reminisce about how they snuck their first kiss away from their parents- or skipped class.
*****TRIGGER WARNING from here on out: talking of sexual themes & sexual assault with Manga/Anime spoilers ****
This is made more intriguing when you realize that there are sexual undertones and parallels to carnivorous instincts *all* throughout both the anime/ Manga that makes you really look at this situation through a different lens.
Eating, other than sex is considered the most primal, natural want that humans have- both wants are connected to the limbic system in our brains, and they both bring out similar reactions. There is a general correction between emotional sex cravings and emotional food cravings (I can provide a source for this if needed)
Even in us, there’s a big tie between being hungry and being aroused.
When Haru was kidnapped and harassed by the shishigumi, even though the Lions was supposedly just “inspecting the meat”, what they was doing had sexual undertones that is tantamount to sexual assault/attempted r*pe when you really look at it. I got my mom to watch Beastars with me, and she was instantly made uncomfortable when she saw the lions force Haru to completely undress and pin her down while looking under her dress.
The strip club scene (& Cosmo’s story) from S2/Manga is another one that instantly pops up in my head when reminding myself of the sexual undertones of carnivorous instincts and devouring another.
Cosmo explicitly stated on stage that she intends to provoke both sexual desire and carnivorous desire in the carnivores that watched her, and it’s pans out to a scene of them all just panting and drooling of hunger & lust. In the manga: (this was changed in the Anime) Cosmo was actually giving a bear- sexual favors for extra money after her shows. Louis actually originally saves her from the Bear grabbing her head and almost devouring her in the bathroom.
When all is said and done, considering the explicit messages that Beastars conveys between sexuality and hunger- I do believe that there are definite sexual undertones between Riz and Tem. Especially with the way that Riz fantasizes about Tem.
This is a really nice and thoughtful video and discussion! It was a pleasure to watch. (Also, cute fursona, we don’t see enough reptiles in the furry community haha)

i love this kind of input on here mate; it's specacular. i like that detail you bring up about cosmo in season 2/the manga because it definitely helps to consolidate the tie between predation and sexual undertones that the story explores.
