    Believe it or not, a good way to save money on food when traveling in Switzerland is buying from supermarket bakeries. The quality of the food is very high, and in many cases much better than the local cafes. Also, the prices are competitive, only a tad bit higher than mainland Europe. Migros is a good supermarket to get snacks.

    I made a personal comparison between NY and Zurich food prices.. I live in NYC for 13 years and visited switzerland couple of times and stayed about a month on August 2022. I always checked restaurant menus when I walked around. Ex around bahnhofstrasse or near the lake. I see prices such as pasta for 27 - 32 chf and salad places such as "Not guilty" for like around 20-22 chf or a take out poke for 26chf.
    In NYC, nice pasta restaurant also is 27-35$ + tax + tip, Salad places such as *sweetgrees* is around 12- 16$ + tax, poke is like 15 to 18$ + tax
    So this is what I realized,
    A. when you dine in - NY is more expensive than Zurich because in zurich 30chf pasta is 30chf vs NYC 30$ +8%tax + 18-20% tip, wc at the end is $38.2!
    B. When you do take out (fast and easy meals/food) like salad bars.. Zurich is more expensive. Prices starts around 18- 20chf vs Salad in NYC usually starts 8$ and u build and ends up around 14$ and no tip!

      in switzerland tips arent common at all, employers pay the workers enough, just a tip as an italian, generally other than in ultrarich zones like tropez ( france ) people dont really expect to be tipped

    #2 doesn’t make sense at all strong currency means imported goods are cheaper, not more expensive. I get your points about economies of scale that can increase price but a high currency impacts pricing for exports making it expensive to others buying externally.

    It’s crazy how Singapore, country with higher take home salary than Switzerland is a lot more affordable in term of food and other essentials. You can get lunch for $4SGD or $3USD in Singapore and it can be the best dish you’ll ever have (sometimes Michelin star dishes for $3USD!). These expensive European countries can really learn from Singapore and subsidise food, it’s literally the most essential thing a person needs. Not to mention, their gov also subsidises other essentials such as housing, high quality education and healthcare, basically everything a person needs. At the end of 2022, there were 638 homeless people in Singapore, yes they can count their homeless people!! That’s just crazy.

      As I understand there is no minimum wage in Singapore and plenty poor people working very long hours for low income making cheap food. In Denmark minimum wage is like $ 20 an hour times 8 hours = $ 160 a day.
      Four-hundred thousand Singaporeans live on $5 a day. Singaporeans Against Poverty, the campaign whose concern is “for those in Singapore caught in the cycle of poverty despite our economic success,” began the $5 challenge, where people can pledge money and try to live on a $5 per day budget.
      A survey from the Housing Development Board showed that one-third of Singaporeans living in one or two room flats have no source of income. Additionally, an Ipsos APAC and Toluna study found that 62 percent of Singaporeans state that their dissatisfaction is a result of their personal financial situation.

      Seeing how EU ministers get "elected" might also contribute to the decision of staying away.
      The rest of Europe had monarchies, fascist or communist regimes while switzerland is the second oldest standing democracy after the US. And the only direct democratic one, around 96% direct democratic votes have been made in switzerland compared tothe rest of the worlds 4%.
      So while most europeans look at the EU as a democratic stabilisation for swiss though it's a downgrade.
      A lot of Europeans will say that direct democracy would be compatible with the EU in reality it's not.
      The EU depends on fast representive decision making, sometimes they even ignore referendum decisions or repeat it until the result is "right".(French people know what I mean).
      The funny thing is the EU itself has a democratic instrument to make a public vote however it also states that the EU is allowed to ignore it...and it was never used.
      TLDR The EU is a great super national organisation, but the democratic system does not work with swiss people and their culture of democracy.

    I'm convinced you used ChatGPT to write this because anyone who has done some recent basic research as of 2023 would know much of what you said doesn't apply anymore. Also, universal high salaries does not mean goods "must" be expensive, especially food. There are affordable groceries in Genève, but no affordable restaurants/cafes. The reason for this is greed, everything is expensive because businesses "can" charge more, not because they need to. Even small "mom and pop" shops in this city will charge 20+ for appetizers and 40 for a main course.

      If the waiter at the restaurant is making 4-5grand per month, trust me, the price of your croissant and café will reflect that. Not so much at the supermarket because they will not be making food from scratch and other reasons like self checkout machines. Being charged 9bucks for less than a litre of Evian water at a restaurant? Yeah no excuses for that.

    Its the same wherever you go in the West... if the cost of living is high then salaries are high, or taxes are low but higher retail prices, or low inflation (for example: presently Switzerland only has 2. something% compared to other European countries running near or above 10%).. the zig zag game, wether this way or that...in the end the governments make sure and know how to get the maximum money parted from the people for self benefit.

    #2 is wrong it should be that exported goods are expensive not imported.

    • @mostafaa_dz
      @mostafaa_dz Před 11 měsíci

      No it isn’t. You don’t even pay for exported goods. If you live in Australia for example and you want to buy a Norwegian chocolate, it will be more expensive because that chocolate will have to be imported via train and boats etc. Since Switzerland is landlocked, not in the EU and mountainous, it is more expensive to import than for example of the UK wanted to import something.

    • @Jayl__
      @Jayl__ Před 11 měsíci

      @@mostafaa_dzou don’t get it. Having higher currency means you can afford more. Buying a $5 gadget from China would be relatively cheaper for a Swiss person than an American because they have a high currency and buying power. Where exports would be expensive because it would seem expensive to external countries because how expensive it is to produce it in their economy (higher wages and generally stronger currency). If you’re talking strictly about the cost importing due to logistics to Switzerland maybe but it’s definitely not due to currency, which what the point he was trying to make.

      @mostafaa_dz Před 11 měsíci

    Switzerland isn’t the same. Yes, Swiss banks had a policy that they can’t disclose information about their customers, but during Obama era these policies changed. The US threatened to sanction Switzerland if they didn’t agree to disclose information about their US customers. The US wanted the Swiss banks to release information so that can tax the rich and prevent any loopholes for the rich. Swiss banks have nothing special. The model that worked for the Swiss is collapsing and we have all seen a recent Swiss bank collapse. This is a major indicator that Switzerland doesn’t have that competitive edge anymore.
