So.....we still don't know which one is best!? I find a lot of this guys vids are clickbait!!
Exactly. I hate when they draw you in and don’t answer the question.
3m flashing tape with acrylic backing is super sticky..even in freezing temps and slightly flexible and not too expensive..
Is there an update on this test to see how these tapes are performing? Also, I'm assuming this test is also being done covered by cladding to remove UV issues from the equation?
i wou;d hope so
Hi Matt, grate video! I've often wondered about what testing goes into these tapes to make sure they last.
Wanting to know, in your experience have you seen that tapes will last 5, 10, 20 years?
Or has your experience so far been that they don't last as they should.
I've seen on all your videos you will incorporate metal sill pans, and mechanically overlap everything so that if they do fail water will still stay outside of the building.
But I do worry that the tightness of houses will degrade quite quickly if these products aren't lasting as they should.
Perhaps fluid applied membranes are a better way to go??
So what would be examples of acrylic tapes? Why no product names mentioned?
Liability and defamation concerns stop them from giving company names.
Lackluster effort as the contestants weren't named and ranked. All products should be equally oriented towards the sun and also from the ground - during summer it's cooler near the ground but in winter it's warmer near the ground. Seems more a click-bait video than a true scientific/academic effort.
What do you think about Flex Seal tape to stop a small leak on a shed made of cement Hardie backer board ? Is there any better options ? Doesn't have to be fancy or pretty.
Do they have g-tapes? You could fill out a test field like that with all of their task specific tapes. When will the results of this study be published?
great information!
So when I'm applying seam tape and flashing, can i refer to both as flashing on the roof?
The other thing is UV/weather exposed longevity and longevity behind siding and generally out of the weather are 2 totally different things.
So no conclusion on which tape is best?
In the vapor and air barrier testing in the back the test panel should be at the same height and either all over grass or all over concrete for the reasons of reflected radiant heat and UV....while the exposures dont differ a great deal its still different and the lower panels get rained on plus slash back from rain doubling if not quadrupling water exposure. too me that is..........
Troublemaker.
Does anyone know using zip and Blue soon Henry void warranties?
Appearances could be deceiving, but that Zip system tape and the Delta product both seem to be holding very, very well. A few of the others which will rename nameless looked to be about as effective as duct tape.
See my blog for some inside scoop that isn't in the video. mattrisinger.com/flashing-tapes-testing/
All of them (save butyl caulk) will leak over time.
butyl caulk will leak too, but not in your lifetime
But butyl caulk is generally a mess to use because it does stick so well TO EVERYTHING
And you can't "profitably" spend hours cleaning up where you should not have put it.
Not sure what the butyl tape in this video is but it's obviously not the same as butyl caulking
(some times called gutter lap cement)
Damn, I wish I saw this video 2 weeks ago when I was flashing the windows on our new construction with rubberized asphalt tape. Regardless, thank you very much for these types of videos; it's nice to learn about the right way to do things.
3M All Weather Flashing Tape 8067, the best
I need to stick over a seam between glass and wood. Will 3m work on both surfaces? 15 degree angle on roof.
looks like fluid applied would be the best option. Sure looked like a majority of the tapes on that wall had some kind of peeling going on.
butyl caulk is fluid (sort of) and cannot be beat - but it is VERY sticky and so any mistaken placement very hard to clean off.
There are fluid applied flashing that go on easy and then set.
butyl essentially never sets, it is what it is when you apply it and fifty years later
I'll go with Luke on the fact that UV would be a big factor on these tapes. You really need them to be covered during testing.
Is flashing safe around electronics?
Do you recommend tapes or fluid applied weather barriers. which is going to be the best long term
I like both. I use alot of Sticky housewraps and I like Fluid Applied WRB's. I choose based on exposure, budget, and crew training.
Matt Risinger Thank you for taking the time to respond! Keep up with your amazing channel I have watched all your videos and this was my first time commenting
Can we have an update on this topic? Time has past and I'm sure there are new insights...
Your typical acrylic adhesive tape and liquid flash are backed by a 30-Year after the installation date System Limited Warranty.
"What do you do after 30 Years."
Typar is the best house wrap and Zip System has the best tape... team the 2 together with a smart installer you'll have a great waterproofed home
What you wrote there is called a "claim." What they are doing at this facility is called empirical testing.
Hey, I didn't see any tape that was flashing.
tape used as flashing IS flashing
Click bait, never answered the question in the title, waste of 5:39.
Even worse if you read the published article, they don't even have a chart of what failed and what didn't. A complete waste of time.
2:03 Butyl tape is good alternative
TRUE - BUT - Even better is to use butyl caulk (but be careful as clean up of a mistake is not easy)
And it's not new, has been used a gutter lap cement for a very long time.
1:40 basically joint and seam type acrylic based tapes were the best.
Wow, no update on this after 5 years? I was so excited...what a letdown
He say’s in the video that you need to look at the report to get the test results. Report in in the link in the description.
So which one is the best dont leave us hanging oh wait this video is 5 years old damm it
The link above www.buildingdx.com/publications seems to be broken.

Stick and peel . . . Peel and stick!
💚
I'm starting to doubt the integrity of this channel that I have been subscribed to.
When a video is TITLED "Flashing Tapes Tested - What's the best one?", we are led to believe they will provide the answer.
What is the point of a video with NO answer?
Can this guy take a 3 minute break from shilling for Zip systems? It would seem less obvious if he highlighted a few alternatives.
3M 8067
I'm trying to unhear "modified ass fault"
This is not clickbait. The title is asking the question which one is best cause they don't know and are hoping you can help.
A study with no conclusion... Sounds like the grant money ran out.
time wasted waiting to know which brand performed best under the specific conditions
yeah, ill just keep stealing the rolls of Zip from my workplace i guess.
What a waste of time......Silly me, of course you can't say which is the best because the company will sue you. Acrylics? On what surface? ...Blah, blah, blah.
