Yi was 7'1, with a 38" vert, and a solid muscular 250lb frame with the footspeed to keep up with smaller forwards. He was a great prospect regardless.
What did he do in the nba with all of that ?
This video clearly explains that he was not a great prospect
@@ej7954 a couple of double digit point seasons in the NBA, better than a lot of players!
@@timboslice8559 He had one double-digit season in New Jersey, averaging 12 and 7 on subpar efficiency from the floor.

Shit Yi is literally Thon Maker I’m so many ways:
- Age conspiracies
- foreign
- drafted by the bucks
- stretch bigs
- had sky high expectations
- showed guard like skills
- in their prior league, they dominated in ways that they weren’t able to in the NBA
Or you can say Thon Maker is Yi Jianlian because Yi came in the NBA earlier than Thon

In my NBA Live 08 save, this dude dominated for the Bucks, what an alternate timeline that would be 😂
An alternative timeline, where NBA live way ahead of NBA 2k would be juat as likely I think 😁 NBA live 2003 was really good for its time though, I really fell in love with bball after playing that game with Lakers and Spurs squads
Ong he uses to average 20 and 10 on nba live 08
If Yi dominated for the Bucks, Giannis would probably end up somewhere else.
mann, i played as him on nba 2k9 !!! srsly his 3 pts was easy n great ! ( i was cheesing 3s 10 times straight playin him).
also he could block (obviously) 😆

I think Yi would've been a good stretch 4 role player in today's game. His best years came when he was in New Jersey where they already had a solid post option in Brook Lopez so Yi was able to spot up and play outside where he shot a respectable 34/35% from behind the arc. I personally think he was drafted into the NBA at an odd time because PFs were sort of a lost position at the time. The 10 & 10 PF was a dying breed and the stretch 4 was coming in but wasn't widely accepted yet. Unless his name was Dirk Nowitzki no one was trying to acquire a PF that played outside at the time.
That's what people who didn't watch him would assume. But Yi was already playing exactly as a spot up shooter in Bucks, and he felt miserable with that role. Yi kinda thrived in the Nets because he had his trainer in the coaching staff and they allowed him higher usage%.
Yi was similar to Jimmer Fredette, in that both of them need to run the offense to thrive, they're just not good enough in NBA level but would be superstars against weaker oppositions.

He was actually a decent player. I remember when he played for the nets.
bojo perez All things considered, the fact he was an ok bench player is kinda good. His ceiling was never going to be high. Being an NBA level talent actually surprised me.
yes, he averaged 12PPG; 7.2RPG; and 1BPG with Nets
The nets system made him a spot up big shooter, which he did alright with.
Anytime he needs to do something involve dribbling and moves, he could not do it at the NBA level.
In this sense, he is pretty much a less athletic version of serge Ibaka minus defense.
His counting stats were okay due to usage, but he was inefficient and his defense was trash. He was a net negative on the court.
As brief member of the Mavericks, he was almost automatic from a step inside the 3pt line. Me and my friends affectionately dubbed it the “Yi shot” and my fave; the “Yi pointer”.

Didn’t want to play defense. Simple as that. Decent jump-shooter and superb athlete. But didn’t have the eye of the tiger like his countryman.
Jay MacDonnell it’s more about his habits or ability than willingness. He plays 4 throughout his career and there always is another big man doing dirty work for him in CBA and national teams. So he can shoot those mid ranges and be the first choice on offensive sides. But not in NBA. That made him lack the mindset of playing defense. Plus his defensive skills were not enough to handle NBA level games. He can make some good defensive moves, but indeed, he’s not a good defensive player.
Jay MacDonnell Yi’s defense = trash, even worse than Harden when facing a typical Nba SF/PF. No upper strength built up in his career, even in Cba
This is true. He is trash.
His EQ is not as high as Yao Ming's, who absorbed American culture, while Yi Jianlian is more introverted and can't talk.
A college friend of mine from China didn't even watch basketball but she said that the hype for him was so huge that she couldn't avoid it.
I was kinda excited when the Nets trades for him....quickly I was like "they traded Richard Jefferson for THIS guy!", then when he finally improved in every stat the next year they traded him for Quinton Ross....and I was like "who the hell is Quinton Ross?!?" Lol, things were tough all over
He was pretty decent, but too injury prone. He also kinda missed the modern NBA style by 6-7 years, he was a bit streaky but some teams would definitely want a stretch big like him. He singles handedly shouldered Chinese basketball in Asia for a long time after yao retired
Yao was just different. More skilled and stronger. And could hold his own against shaq.

@Meenhaz Foysol
Are you still a fan after the team moved from New Jersey or are you just a bandwagon fan after Durant showed up and looked up Yi's numbers on Basketball Reference after Andy told you about him?
Yeah his rookie numbers weren’t that bad because rookies are typically pretty bad and he never played against NBA talent. Delivering average rookie numbers was a best case scenario for him. He’d also be more of a player in the modern league as a stretch 5 where there’s no expectation of banging in the paint.

Interesting thing about Yi’s contract with the Lakers, it was an even more severe version of Dwight Howard’s current contract. I don’t remember specifics, but only about 1 million of that 8 million was guaranteed and he would get the rest based off of games played I believe. He also had asked to be waived, presumably because he realized that he wasn’t going to be getting alot of playing time for the Lakers, thus not collecting too much of that contract, and because he knew he could still dominate back home and be loved by millions there
Great video Andy !!! Keep it up my guy , man I remember when Yi Jianlian was actually a player , but he couldn’t be the next Yao to be fair

I don't know man, maybe he wasnt ready as a 22 y/o rookie, but without the consistent play time it's really hard to develope. Without the injuries, he could have been a pretty solid role player as 26-29 y/o, but to reach the potential of Yao, it was pretty hard to do it.
What I remember the most about him is from 2k and he was actually pretty good in the game but I’ll never forget his name it’s kinda unforgettable

He’s not a bust, he was just overhyped
Doesn't that make him a bust by definition, didn't reach expectations, albeit the expectations were high Lol
Agree, he was putting somewhat a decent stats, though he was just overhyped because asian baller is a big thing in the league
this dude is the literal definition of overhyped. Now a days people misuse it because they're tired of hearing about a certain player.
@@DannyStyleZ facts 😂😂😂😂
@@DannyStyleZ I gotta disagree. The statement is he was overhyped. To me, the definition of bust refers to someone who doesn't live up to "realistic potential" This wasn't realistic potential. Scouts should have made more reasonable comparisons.

Damn. Yao ming was actually so great; thanks for bringing him up.
They are two very different players playing different positions. Yao is 7’5”, a traditional Center. Yi is a forward, he got SF skills but lack the speed, he’s tall enough for PF and faster than other PF but not strong enough. He’s like Juan Howard, stuck between the two positions. However, he has a decent shot.

Andy we want video on 2009 nba draft😊
Yi was actually very good the first season he was traded to Nets, until he broke his hands during the game playing against the Bucks. He was playing so good during the game against them and the Bucks fans were even booing him. Unfortunately as a introvert who do not communicate well with his teammates, Yi never found the sweet spot for him in the NBA. And his injury also did not help
I was just watching all the smoke’s podcast and tmac brought him up, and I swear I was thinking to myself what happened to this guy lo.
As a Chinese I am so glad that Andy made a video about Yi. Parts of the reason of his falling is due to the overhype by Chinese media, which created unrealistic expectation among the fans. Although I would love see another Chinese player playing in NBA, I don’t see it happen in the next 10 or 20 years, majorly because we simply don’t have the physical tools to survive in NBA. Yao survived but still suffered a tons of injuries
Bruh I got this guy whenever I could in NBA 2K11. He and Blatche were always welcome on my roster, lol
I didn't know there was that much difference between 19 and 22
19, raw, but already talented prospect is an attractive asset.
22, rookie, although showing some level of competence, isn't as attractive.
@Sara Richardson He was drafted in 2007... if he was born in 1997 that would've made him the freakiest 10-year-old ever.
lmaooo did u upload this bcuz of his recently realesed 2k card?
Bro he’s goated in 2k
Ryan Gau I start him at SF he’s fye asf.
JJ 0 I was thinking the same thing.
As a Laker fan, I remember Yi was the one who told Lakers to waive him because he wanted to go back to China because 1. He thought he was gonna have a lot of playing time with the Lakers but during pre season games, he was like the third string center and 2. he just wanted to go home.
I think he could've been a 14-15ppg 8rb type 6th men if he played into his late 20s early 30s and further refined his game in the NBA. He had the right physical tools being ~255lbs at 7'0'' and having a 7'4 wingspan. He had good leaping ability and great mobility, although his lateral movement was not great. If you watch his play in international play(even today) his mid-long range shooting improved vastly and his conditioning got better every year. He dunked on more people at age 30 then he did in his early 20s because of increased core strength.
That was a big gamble for bucks back then, I guess you can say Yeet Jianlian...
........I'll see myself out
Then came the freak
Good thing they didn’t stop taking chances on Young overseas prospects
umm the joke is good
I guess we can say that
If healthy, he would be a good bench player in NBA with his shooting.
Yi got talent and he always trained hard. His problem is culture shock and minor injuries which always stopped his progress
I remember back then the biggest criticism of Yi is he shoots too much, there was a time in the Nets where he gained like 10 or 15 pounds of muscle after injury to come back to play more in the paint. It started to work out then he got injured. I think he would do pretty well at least as a role player in today's game, most teams are empty in the middle and a mobile big man that can shoot the three would be very valuable today. Even Yao could jack up 3 threes in a game if he is still playing today.
3rd best league in the world ? Unless you consider Euroligue like a league, you're absolutely wrong. Euroligue is like the champions league for basketball. It's the competition that allows the best european teams to play against each other. Come on... French league, greek one, spanish one, turkish one and some other more are way better than the chinese league...
I think its because of former nba players they always go to the cba
lol I'm pretty sure that's the intent of his statement. He considered Euroleague as 1 league.
易建联(Yi Jianlian) failed in NBA because of his introvert personality however he is definitely not a bust.
Walton is a trash in coaching
Who do you think will be the next big Chinese player in the NBA?
gb benner Not sure. Just like I am not sure when will NBA reopen 😂
@@gbbenner9382 Good question. There are a few young Chinese players in higher school and NCAA. I will assume next one will from them. But none of them is likely to be high-rank pick like Yao and Yi IMO.
He also failed cuz of lacking skills. If his athleticism wasnt as special in the NBA he shouldve worked on his shooting much more. Those stats sucked.
He failed because of injuries nuff said. What can Walton do if he gets injured every damn time.
I love this player man he was never really bad in the nba they expected him to be better than he was though
Why didn't you talk about his success for the Chinese national team. You showed so many clips of him on the team and I don't think you mentioned it. Yi part two? Thank you good video

Idk if he was mismanaged or Yi didn't listen the instructions, but the guy clearly had a ton of talent. He's still playing at a high level in 2020, and some NBA contemporaries who were formally all-stars like Noah have already washed out. I remember people saying that he out shined Noah in the draft workouts.
He didn't have a successful NBA career as Yao did, but after returning to CBA he dedicated years and years of solid performance to his hometown GuangDong club and eventually evolved into a totem of team China, single handedly carried it within an overall declining decade after the big centre era (Yao, WangZhiZhi and Bateer). From the young face next to Yao in the paint he became a brother figure to all younger Chinese pro basketball player, and respected by all fans, including CBA rivalries - I'm myself a Beijing fan.
He just couldn’t see any flaws in his game
Wrong organization
How good was Marcus Camby a talented defender in his prime in the 2000s.
Yi is really the second best thing that China every had after Yao. No one else has played at the same height as these two. It is now 2020 and Yi is still playing for his national team and it has been two decades. They cannot find anyone worthy to take Yi s place.
Yi is not only dominating in key area in CBA. He also shoot the ball as well.
Ngl if he was healthy and playing in today’s NBA he could’ve been a beast.
I dunno about beast. But certainly he could be a decent role player filling the stretch 4 position - good size, can run the floor, can stretch the defense. Not sure he’d be a starter though.
