  • Robert Cadman was a steeplejack and a stunt man. In the early 18th century he climbed the spires of English churches and performed amazing feats of daring-do.
I go off to investigate the the tragedy of this young man during the big freeze in Shropshire in 1739.

One of those interesting stories that only the locals know and now we do too thanks to you.
I found on Wikipedia the text for the commemorative plaque at St Mary's. It reads:
"Let this small Monument record the name of Cadman, and to future time proclaim How by'n attempt to fly from this
high spire across the Sabrine stream he did acquire His fatal end.
'Twas not for want of skill Or courage to perform the task he fell, No, no, a faulty Cord being drawn too tight
Harried his Soul on high to take her flight Which bid the Body here beneath good Night Feb.2nd 1739 aged 28"

A fascinating story indeed, well before the days of Health and Safety! St Mary's is a lovely church and I often have coffee in the café.

Most enjoyable. I was in St Mary's choir for some years. The church is well worth a visit, the Jesse window is splendid. The domed church of St. Chad's hard by the Quarry is also worth seeing.

Such a sad story, but this area of Shrewsbury- wow! Loved the old city gate/arch you entered through! Beautiful! Those red stone buildings you passed by. Gorgeous! And then the church! Breathtaking! Loved those arched stained glass windows, the spires....well, everything! What a feast for the eyes!!!😍

I'd heard about that stunt going wrong but had always assumed it was just drunk pub talk lol. Also I've been told about a drunk man who climbed to the top of one of the spires to retrieve the weather vane but fell to his death when he tried to put it back.

broadcaster tony "on your bike" butler included this tale on his travelogue TV series which he made for bbc midlands in about 1984 - it was only broadcast in that area.

I think the series was Biking Butler - from Wikipedia - "He also presented his successful local TV shows Sporting Butler, Boating Butler and Biking Butler, travelling around the region meeting people with an interesting story to tell" - he did cycle between the areas in it and so it must be Biking Butler.

Poor chap - definitly a candidate for Stupid Deaths. The Dingle in the Quarry is where the actual quarry was. I think Old St Chads predates St Marys.
    Enjoyable wee vid.

@@RichardVobes You're welcome. The 1720' s financial crisis was similar to the contemporary 2008 financial crisis. When financial markets collapse, people invest in real objects such as art, property, antiques and jewelry.
