How to Make a Living Plant Wall (DIY)

- Yo, what's up SerpaSquad!? In this one, I tackle a project that I've been wanting to make for a while now... a living plant wall! I tried to keep it as budget-friendly and cheap as I possibly could while making sure it's a quality piece of art. Do a quick google search and you'll see what I mean. This is a really good price for something like this. Pre-build pieces, with live plants, are typically VERY expensive.
Most of the plants and materials I used were found at big box home improvement stores. If you look around online or wait for things to go on sale, you can easily make something similar for much less. Be sure to check around your house and see what you already have. Let me know if you have questions on anything and I'll do my best to respond.
Here's a link to the fabric pockets I used in the video (NOT an affiliate link).

I have 2 living walls exactly like this. They are hell to water when you plant directly into the felt pockets. The felt dries out the soil super fast, and you end up watering every 2-3 days. It looks beautiful though. I highly recommend putting the plants in nursery pots and then hiding them in the pockets. That way you can just pull the plants out to water and then back in the pockets they go. Also watering in the felt is super messy as the water runs right though and drips everywhere. I ended up installing a trough underneath to catch the runoff and protect my floors. So worth it though! LOVE LOVE LOVE my living walls!
That's a fantastic tip! Would make it easier to switch out plants as they outgrow the wall to I think.
@@katherinelandreth2191 It does! The plants grow so fast, that every 6 months I'm basically popping out a plant and adding in some cuttings from other plants. It also makes it easier to deal with any pests as I can wash and treat them when watering. My plant walls are a lot of work, but I love them, so it's definitely worth it. :)
wow, thanks for the heads-up!
Good tips. I was wondering how difficult watering must be!
I was just going to ask...how do you not get water on the floor? Thx Cat 👍😊
A watering hack for something like this: Place a small cutting of nopal or aloe within the root-ball of each plant, with the gel of the cactus exposed. This gel will naturally absorb and retain water within the soil for FAR LONGER periods of time than any pre-made mixture. Your plants can feed off of the gel, as it works to retain water. To ensure the cactus wont regrow itself, just mash it up a bit before adding it into the soil - they're pretty resilient and can re-root if you don't.
This hack is used in Mexican orchards when growing tree saplings in the hot/dry climate. It minimizes water expenses and just improves the overall vitality of the main plant.
Hey Joaquin, do you have a link for this? I did'nt find anything about these technique to use the gel as water reservoire. Thanks a lot!
You could also do this with edible herbs to have a hanging herb garden in the kitchen!
That would be awesome!
you'd need grow lights
@@FlaminDonkeez With enough natural light maybe not, or could have small lights attached to the top of the frame
@@FlaminDonkeez if you placed it opposite a window you probably wouldn't.
really watch which herbs you put together- but I bet you could have two; one 'dry' and one 'wet'.
I had a great time on my week off, but it's good to be back! Enjoy the video and have a great weekend SerpaSquad!
EDIT 1: Let me know if you thought the cost breakdown was helpful. I can do it for future DIY builds (when applicable) if you did.
EDIT 2: Also the plant I referred to as Jade Pothos (Epipremnum aureum 'Jade') is actually a Philodendron hederaceum 'Brasil'. The plant card erroniously identified the plant and I didn't check it. My bad!
Great to see you back!
Hi.
Glad you had some good time off. Don't forget to take that when needed. Excited to see something new!
Good to see you back!
Hey Tanner I'm making a bioactive fire belly toad palidarium, will cardinal tetras make good tank mates (there is enough space for both animals)
Thanks for doing the pricing the way that you did. I absolutely hate when people will say stuff like "I used stuff I had laying around so it was free" or "buy a 100 pack for $20 and use 5, so it only costs $1"
Just curious 🧐 How is the Living Plant Wall doing today? Can you do an update? I must have missed this episode. Dang, you are so talented!
This guy deserves so much more attention I’ve been watching him for 2 years now and he is (in my opinion) the most creative CZcamsr out there.
Agreed. He explains things really well and at a very comfortable pace too!
I also really enjoy his videos
Agreed!!!! Favorite channel out there!
The Jade pothos you got is actually a Philodendron Brasil
Thank you! I thought I was going crazy lol
I WAS JUST GONNA COMMENT THAT!
Nerd
@@frogwknife3825 ok then
@@frogwknife3825 yes.
Use care cutting pallet wood on the table saw or Skill Saw, there is often hidden fasteners that can damage your blade as well as shower you with shrapnel, always wear eye protection. Good job on this planter, I will be making one also in the near future. Thanks for the inspiration.
YOU GOT A ONE YEAR UPDATE OF THIS BRO, THANKS FOR INSPIRING US KEEP IT UP
If you do another one. Could you do a “high tech” version with lights and a drip watering system?
I would really like to see this happen
Yes I can. That's almost what I did with this one, but I thought it would be a little lofty for an "easy" project.
That would be so cool
@@SerpaDesign I have to go to exotic pet reptile or amphians stores to find it
@@SerpaDesign That would be an awesome project too!
It looks really good! I'd be tempted to add tillandsias
I was thinking that too
I love when my favorite youtubers like my other favorit youtubers
I have seen countless instructional videos on a very wide variety of subjects, and this has to be the best video ever! Kudos on your lovely wall and skills to make a perfect video. The production, the pricing, the info, the pacing... You're a fantastic educator and video producer! Thank you for the experience.
I really like that you added the price and where to buy the stuff. It’s really helpful for people who want to try and do the same thing as you.
I can't wait to see an update on this one! I love seeing the way everything grows in and matures.
I think if you used hemp grow matting would have been better because you could place plants where ever you want and even crowd them in. Also it's cheaper than the ready made matting. I would have also placed a small water bottle reserviour at the bottom back and used a wicking method to draw water up through the hemp matting. That way it makes watering easy and that also means this wall could be placed safely inside and mounted on a wall, without having to be removed for watering. Just some of my ideas. But a good build.
I love the way you planted it, with the large dramatic shapes in the middle.
I scoffed at the PVC board, but then I spent 2 seconds thinking about sanding and waterproofing plywood, and decided it is money well spent. Good video, thanks!
Haha that's what I'm saying! It's a lot of added work to treat the wood.
@@SerpaDesign One more thing! If you haven't already, set aside some time to make yourself a table saw sled for cross cuts. After I made one for my saw I found it so useful and versatile that I think every table saw should have one.
I’m having trouble finding this type of board at Lowes/HD. Any recommendations?
me watching the price slowly climb way higher than I expected: *nervous sweating*
LOL
I'm sure it would be cheaper if you buy seeds instead :)
When it comes to plant walls the most cost effective I have found is using pothos. You can get big ones and break them up into thirds. It is expensive. I think my plant wall is around 500 with 40 plants.
Dropped the idea
@@beauar1 or you could buy a small pothos and take some cuttings when it’s growing well and just propagate those
It's a Saturday where I am, Tanner uploads a video, it's a living wall piece, it's also a DIY....seems like all my lucky stars are lining up perfectly today. Thank you!!!
Well done my friend, I learned a lot from you. You have a strict follower in Turkey, I really appreciate your effort. Thank you so much.
I have been thinking of doing something like this for a long time. I watched lots of vids on the subject and this one is one of the best ones that l have seen. Thank you Tanner! I like everything about this project. ❤️👌😍👏💚
Given the state of the plant market right now, 147$USD for plants isn`t too bad given how many there are! People are paying more than 10 times that amount for unrooted, leafless node cuttings of rare aroids right now. Something I always appreciate about the projects on your channel is that they use accessible, classic plants and makes them look like a million bucks, even if you can still snag them for a lot less.
You never need to use rare and inaccessible items to make a beautiful project 😉
This is stunning ! Definitely adding to my list of "over the winter" DIY tasks!
Bringing home a piece of paradise well worth the cost. Especially you can really enjoy it as it's your own creation. Gorgeous!
👌🥰
30 seconds into your DIY videos I always start thinking "OH F! I'm gonna want to do that but I already cant fit all my tanks and aquariums as it is!!" But this one hangs on a wall, so my roommates and partner cant prevent me from doing it! After the vid, an evil laugh or two, and a trip to the garden and hardware stores, I'm definitely spending my weekend doing this. Yay!
LOL! Good luck with your build. I hope it turns out amazing!
I'm totally this on a small scale - just an 18" x6" closed bottom window planter on the wall above my freshwater 20H tank. I've been going for the prehistoric jungle for that tank, so this is perfect
Lovely piece of work; the mixture of leaf textures and depth is a visual treat
I'm definitely going to do this with plants and materials I already have/can find to make this significantly cheaper but other wise this tutorial has been far more easy to follow and the most user friendly I've seen so far. Thank you!
This is fantastic! The breakdown of exactly how to build, waterproof and plan makes it inspiring to build. I've always watched for your terrariums but this is like a bonus. I hope to attempt one of these this spring for a very sunny room in our home that just had a little makeover.
I really like it! I'd like to see you incorporate a living plant wall with automatic watering from an aquarium!
I've done outside living walls! Thanks to you :) It's Labour weekend and Spring here. It been very productive. ✌
Looking forward to another awesome video 😀
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Do a bigger one!!!!!!! I love all of your videos!!!!!!! Your work really speaks for itself!!!! Hope you had a wonderful break!!!!
Hi Tanner! I always "like" your videos before I watch them because I know they'll be good. I appreciate the extra time it took to not only show us how to do it, but the sizes and the cost. I'd love to make one of these, but don't have the room to have one. It turned out beautiful! Nice choice of plants. Thank you so much for sharing!
Love when you show DIY stuff! I will watch whatever you want to create!!
Holy cow, I haven’t watched your channel in a year and I’m amazed at how far you’ve come. Happy for your success!
Simply incredible. I'm astounded by your eye for color and texture
Thank you so much! Now I can put this on the empty wall outside! Ive beem thinking of puttting plants on driftwood but this is so much better!
This turned out very cool. This is actually very cheap for what it is, and there are a lot of ways to cut costs along the way. Thanks for the inspiration, as usual!
11:14 That's Philodendron Brasil bro. I love your videos. I have been very busy from work and kind of missed a lot of your uploads. Your Low/No Cost Terrarium is my sentimental favorite. I am so glad that you have preserved the otherwordly/ enigmatic atmosphere in your videos. I am binge watching now. Thanks man!
Haha thanks bro, I really appreciate the support!
Love this! I’ve been wanting step by step instructions on a build like this that focuses on a waterproof wall. Thanks!
Quick safety tip when using the push stick on the table saw. Always push on the piece that is against the fence, the the piece that is getting cut off. Pushing this piece can close the kerf, causing it to pinch on the blade and kickback.
Great build, I might try this one.
That's so beautiful and cool. As a plant lover I will totally choose this rather than a wall hanging ❤️ .just amazing
I'm moving in with my girlfriend and I want to build her something like this thanks for the video ☺️ subbed 👍
did you make it? if not... go and make it :) signed... many times disappointed by sweet male promises :P
Honestly such a sweet idea. I hope you made it and she loved it! 😊
@@urbanrat84 sheesh chill wtf
you did it ?
Thanks so much Tanner! This is exactly the type of how to I have been looking for. I love your waterproofing-- it often seems overlooked in other how-to living wall resources. :-)
Pretty awesome. Stylish, practical, attainable and well researched. Thanks again for the great ideas. Glad you're back. Keep 'em comin'!
This looks amazing! Well done.
Can't wait for the update on this one in a couple of months once it has grown in a bit.
This was such a informative video that shows how easy and inexpensive it is to create thing of beauty and education. Thanks Tanner
Brilliant video - I made a living plant wall last year and now all I want to do is fill my home with them 😂 I think I may need to move into a greenhouse hahah 💚🌿
Only 40 seconds in and already clicking the like button. It's these cheapest-possible projects that got me to love your channel in the first place.❤️🙏🏽
DIY projects are best, especially yours 👍
Thanks!
One of my favorite videos you made yet
Thanks for breaking everything down! I've been wanting to make something like that for a long time. It looks fantastic! Another one with edible plants would be really neat!
Looks awesome 👍🏻 And I agree , it’s a lot more interesting than another picture on the wall .
It is more more worthy than many paintings. And plants give a good vibe always.
Just loved it😍😍💖💗💙💚💛💜
i hope you'll be able to make another, bigger living wall. We really hope to create one in our next home and your video's are always an inspiration for us when it comes to plants and terraria. With all your tips, our terraria have been doing very well ever since planting them. So we have faith in your plant wall tips too!
This is so, so beautiful! Absolutely LOVE it!
Absolutely incredible and inspiring as always.
That is just so beautiful. I truly enjoy all the projects you make. This one is something I may be able to do some day. Thanks.
Wow! Beautiful...!!! Can't wait to see updates on this piece...
I love all your projects, esspecially if they are not expensive and easy to do by yourself.
I love it! Another great build! One I've been thinking about doing, this helps take some of the guess work out of it, thanks!
I love your work and attention to detail.
I think using a lot of spagnum moss looks good if you use ALOT of plant like tanner, but for me I do more open scapes so I don’t use as much. Also loved this video!
Amazing job. I have most of those plants so I see a new project in the coming weeks. Thanks for the inspiration
Always good to see that SerpaDesign notification :)
12:17 Thank you for the disclaimer regarding pests ! This is a huge issue not so many people are aware of !
Bring in the fungus gnats 😂
Absolutely gorgeous ❤
So beautiful! I love it. I'm not handy and I've never put things together before but I would love to try this! 💚💚💚 come on 10k! I wanna see the next
That's so creative and beautiful!
Amazing works I'm always inspired by them
definitely adding this to the list of products i want to start selling for my terrarium/aquarium business, awesome build
Me as an Oregonian is laughing at the fact you had to buy English ivy instead of ripping it from literally any tree
Haha ... what a difference a location makes .....I live in a desert lol.
@@harryme472 I have the same issue with Ivy, wild Clematis and Siberian Blackberry, and many more which do not belong in a rain forest environment - as they are aggressive and opportunistic. YEARS of fighting and it all comes back...Nurseries are still selling horrid spreaders like Euphorbia...which newbies seem to fall for every time - so it is taking over neighborhoods. MUST wear gloves and long sleeves to eradicate many of these invasives - as they often can harm your skin.
The reveal took my breath away!
I'm loving it!
Hope your plants are doing well!
Talk about inspiring! I'm limited to houseplants because I live in an HOA and can't find a way to protect outside plantings from our "landscape maintenance" crew. Thanks for sharing some great ideas.
Once again, it`s fantastic and so inspiering what you create!
What a great way to wake up. Good job I want to try this now.👍
I Absolutely Love 💘 Your Wall Planter, Thanks for sharing your knowledge on this project.
Love the build and the breakdown. I've been trying to figure out what I want to do with a focal wall in my house...think we just found a solution!!
Thank you very much on this well informative instruction on how to build a living wall. I am looking forward to building one.
This is such a great video! Thanks for showing the prices it gives me an idea of what projects like this cost! BTW: I love the endresult. Well done!
Looks great Tanner! I personally would have gone with a different look for the wood, but love the final product nonetheless.
Good to have u back matey
I'm thinking of doing my own living wall for my bedroom and I like how yours turned out. One thing, the one you called a Jade Pothos is actually called Philodendron Brazil. I have one myself and it's def one of my fav's. Thank you so much for sharing your method of the living wall, I'm glad you left it more rustic, that's my taste too. Have a good evening!😇
Tanner this is FAB!!! You’re always so thorough but I think this is one of your best DIY tutorials yet. I would really love to see more like this in the future. I’ve already shared in a bunch of my houseplant groups to try to help get you to 10,000 likes but I’d share it anyway. Well done Sir!
Thanks for the love and support! It really means a lot.
Hey Tanner I have a trick for you, if you don't have silicone you can also use flex glue, it is animal safe and yes it actually does work underwater
That’s a lot of damage
I always have silicone 😉
That's awesome so beautiful you arranged them perfectly too..
Well done Tanner! love it
Excellent idea! Beautiful build. Thank you for the upload.
Love this build thankyou. Your instructions are informative and easy to follow.
A secondhand corflute (corrugated plastic) sign could be a great material to use as the backing board - to minimise using new plastic.
I just made some ‘rain gutter containers’ from old corflute to grow lettuces.
Living art! You are AMAZING bro!
The amount of detail you included is incredible!
tyfs!! xoxo!
Thank you serpa squad another great job!
I love this. You are one of my favorite creative youtubers. I just wish I could figure out how to do a living wall within my (very small) budget!
You could grow cuttings and make the pockets your self, which would already halfen the price. And if you have a big garden you could make your own soil. Also you could add an dripper hose with a coppling (maybe for bigger walls or garden walls that are hanging outside). Sometimes they use a ledge on the bottom filled with water, that is sucked up by jute keeping the hole moistered. Love it :)
This looks awesome! Looking forward to seeing an update!
Hope you feel good after some time off dude.
I really appreciate having found your channel recently; your creativity has inspired several ideas that I'm hoping to try this summer.
One thing that you might try on another frame like this, since you specifically mentioned the grime on the pallet wood, is a quick char with a propane torch. If that's something you have done previously, then disregard; I haven't seen all your videos - yet.
Beautiful project. I'll be building one for our house in the future
Loved the video! Appreciate the price showing as well. Do more of these!
Glad to know it was helpful!
