      iceland is closest to utopia.
      No bad people.
      No competition.
      Live happy, serene life.
Of course, it comes with the most boredom

You included many points of interest to tourists. I am close to retirement age in the U.S. I am considering Iceland as my next home. There are a few basic points that you did not address, 1st how does a retired American expat get their Social security payments transferred to an Icelandic bank from the U.S. while living full time in Iceland??? Also, how do you start the process of moving there, what office does an American need to contact to start the process? Where is this office located? Is there one in the U.S.? And how long does the process take? (I have been told it could take as long as 7 years). Any feedback on these points would be appreciated.

The apartments are so expensive as well as the food, gas is also expensive, How could this be an ideal place for retirement? There are not even trees!!! ( they were deforested by the early vikings!) Maybe it is a must see place for tourism, a few weeks, at the most to explore and enjoy the rare nature of the island, but must get out of there to retire somewhere else...No need to isolate oneself in an island at that cost, and so far away from trees and warm weather

It's expensive as tourist, but if you working there is totally different story...and not to overcrowded, less pollution and no army conflicts...

we know from science that the cold helps with inflammation and creates a stronger immune system maybe thats why they are ranked high on the long life scale. places like here and New Zealand are worth the move if you can actually get accepted by the govt to move there. what you save in other expenses cover the little higher costs. I would have ppl do the math on their expenses for their own life and compare, it may come out the same for a better environment. I would like to try it for 3 months, maybe find a wife and then move there to retire from the Railroad, Good job on the info.

Is Iceland a country with any spiritual values?

I'm sure people there have spiritual values, maybe not all of them but some almost certainly do. I pray to my stuffed teddy bear. I am spiritual ;-)
