Thank you for being the only one telling the truth about VN. I'm a native but I can only stay 2 weeks at a time due to pollution, hygiene, lawlessness, and scams. Yes they scam their own people. Never felt safe in VN. That's why we all left and still leaving. There is a rise in fake marriages to get to America and fake college students so they can stay in America.

It appears to me, a seventy-three-year-old who has worked in the Caribbean and would like to live there, that places like Martinique are simply out of reach for me. I am planning to become an expat soon and my financial wherewithal will only be my $1,550-a-month social security allotment and perhaps a thousand a month from my 40-year-old daughter, who has a very good paying job and could afford to assist me. I loved Martinique when I visited but it appears other places in the Caribbean and in Mexico and Central America would be a better fit for me financially. I have ascertained that there are a good number of places for an expat down there where the total cost of all necessities and rent might not exceed $1,000 a month. If that's the case I would be in a good position to enjoy these sunset years since I'd have about $1,500 in spending money.

As far as noise is concerned, you can be as careful as possible but it can change in a flash. I moved into an apartment near the beach in central Vietnam and it was quiet. Less than a year later they began construction of a rest about 3 feet from my back door. So much noise but I thought once they are done it will be okay, wrong. They put in a swimming pool next to my back door along with karaoke and during the day and night children yelling and screaming and jumping into the pool. My lease came up and I moved! They tried to raise my rent and I had to laugh to myself. They could have dropped the price and I would still have left! Before going there I had a room on the top floor of a homestay and they had so much construction I thought they were on the roof over my head morning, noon and night. The whole place vibrated!

Last time I checked, Spain is one of the three European countries with wealth tax. And your “wealth” is anything above 700,000 euros, which may include your property, life savings, even cars. By American standards, you may be not even the upper middle class, yet wealthy by Spain’s standards. Which means you’ll be taxed even if your current income is ZERO and you’re living entirely off your life’s savings … watching them disappear faster than you hoped. Oh, and did I forget to mention - you’ve already been taxed on your income in the past (your salary) … and you’re taxed when you withdraw from your 401K … so it’s effectively double taxation! I’d stay in Spain for the duration just short enough not to be considered its resident. And retire elsewhere. Just a thought.

The only cons for us are heat/humidity and no retirement visa. The heat/humidity can be overcome by moving to Dalat, I guess. So how could a retired couple stay there long term ? Thx !
