About The Show:
Only months into their marriage, Jamie (Helen Hunt) and Paul (Paul Reiser) Buchman already find themselves struggling to establish the ground rules for a life together in their Greenwich Village apartment. Charming and creative, documentary filmmaker Paul is also cautious and analytical, while up-and-coming public relations executive Jamie is a freer spirit, although one who harbors her own share of anxieties. Along with Jamie's luckless sister Lisa (Anne Ramsay), Paul's bachelor cousin Ira (John Pankow), and their close friends Dr. Mark Devanow (Richard Kind) and his wife Fran (Leila Kenzle), the Buchmans approach their life together with honesty, charm and humor in the face of the challenges posed by demanding careers, meddling families, former lovers, well-meaning friends and even their dog, Murray.

This is one of the few great husband and wife sitcoms. Extremely funny and charming.

This show will always be special to me. To say it was not easy to get along with my grandmother would be a massive understatement. I happened to be at her place for a few hours one day. I asked if she would mind terribly if I watched one show. It was Mad About You. From that day on, if I was there, we’d watch an episode. She liked it so much, she started watching it, on her own. One ½ hour of peace was invaluable to me during those visits.

My favorite sitcom, people praise friends way too much and forget about this wonderful show!
I don't think it's about them praising it too much. Friends was just a bigger show ratings wise so naturally, it would get wider attention. Both shows are great, Mad About You just never caught the attention of a large audience.

I WOULD HAVE RAISED THE RATINGS, I would have seen it every time a rerun was aired. Also, i would have invented a fandom for MAY, I would be writing fan letters to Paul Reiser. God, this show deserved better!

@Nikosis I guess we all have different taste in tv shows. Personally i don't like Seinfeld, i guess it's all about finding something you can relate to. In my opinion some episodes of MAY are more funny than some episodes of Friends, but that's me, you do you.

It won a lot of awards and accolades. It definitely wasn't underrated.
Seasons 1-4 were sooo good. One of my favorite sitcoms of all time
I remember watching this as a teen. Shows what true love really is. Not perfect but but it's real and strong and honest.

The acting is very natural, to me, I don't see actors, I see Paul and Jamie.

I love this show my favorite one was where they were sitting in front of their daughters bedroom for 23 minutes straight and never went to commercial I didn’t realize it until they said on the show that they had been sitting there for 23 minutes it was all done in one take I don’t think any other show has EVER done that

I agree with her. I can’t find it on any streaming app, on iTunes or anywhere else I can think of. There’s apparently DVD’s of it, but I no longer have a DVD player.
I'm pretty sure I found it on Hulu. It wasn't easy to find though. But it was worth it.

I didn't realize Helen Hunt was in this show. That part in Friends when her and her friend mistake Phoebe for Ursula makes a lot more sense. Since Lisa Kudrow played Ursula in Mad about You.
Helen Hunt also was married to Hank Azaria who dated Pheobe's character.

Such a wonderful show. If memory serves, Mad About You came on at 8, Friends at 8:30 and Law & Order aired 9 on Thursdays, so it was two solid hours of great tv programming. I was a poor college student living in a group home at the time. I used to study in the basement from 7PM till the early morning hours; however, my roommates knew that I loved those shows so in Thursdays as the intro to Mad About You began they would bang on the floor (my ceiling) to let me know the night's programming was starting. Such great times and even greater memories.

@@energicko One of the things that made Mad About You memorable, to me at least, was that they weren't afraid to use silence. Most sitcoms eschew silence and as a consequence each line in the dialogue is delivered in a staccato manner, as though spewing out words lends itself to quality entertainment. I found Mad About You seemed to use silence as a way to subtly underscore precious, significant moments worthy of the audience's contemplation and consideration. It takes good timing and discipline to deliver lines like that, and Paul Rider and Helen Hunt certainly lived up to the challenge.

I genuinely don't understand why some people consider the current era to be a "golden age" for television.
The quality of TV shows from the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s easily put today's shows to shame.

I loved this show soooooo much when I was on my own and in college. I love the episode where Jamie and Lisa have the same pocket book. They get swapped. Jamie's has everything that you could possibly need if anything goes wrong during your day. Lisa's has just bizarre stuff in it. By the end of the episode Jamie looks like a mess and Lisa looks great. Lisa being Lisa doesn't seem to know that it isn't her pocket book and just seems pleasantly surprised at all the helpful stuff that she finds in the bag. Lol It's great writing. They took a little thing and turned it into so much and really explained how Lisa can be so messed up!
That was a great sitcom, you have to be from New York City to appreciate it, just like Seinfeld.

Top 5 TV Theme Openings of All Time - loved the rhythm of this show. The natural dialogue and easy chemistry between Paul and Jamie was what made it work. Seinfeld was the funniest but this show encapsulated 90s New York City to me.

I used to watch this as a kid and I loved it. Didn't understand anything, but something seemed familiar. I'm 30 now and got married, I'm a director and I have a Rough Collie (like Murray). I just watched this episode, I didn't remember anything. Now I feel like I'm in "The truman show".

However, re Helen Dearest, and re her 'I See You' 2019 movie...it was actually pretty gogood.

Just found the new episodes from 2019,had to binge watch all 12. Love this show.
You can't go there again! There original series was great! Any remake is a mistake! This was about two people in love with each other! And how they dealt with things! It showed people what was possible if you were committed to each other! They didn't give up! It was great! Leave it alone!
You must have missed how the series ended in 1999, back when sitcoms had phenomenally lousy, soul-sucking finales.
