Saving ELDERLY Woman From Getting a Fine CITY VIOLATION Overgrown Lawn

  • Today we are helping an elderly woman get her overgrown lawn under control. She received a city violation notice on her door. We contacted her to see if she needed help cleaning up her lawn but she said she already had someone coming out to clean it up over the weekend. We stopped by on Monday to make sure that she had got it cleaned up and unfortunately the other contractor left her with a big mess. We didn't want her to get a fine from the city so we decided to clean up her overgrown lawn for free.

When I bought my current home, there was a house behind me on the next street over that looked like this. I went over to ask if the person needed help, it's a wheelchair-bound old lady who said her neighbor used to do it for her, but he's in his 80s now and it's too much for him. I've taken care of the property for her for the last few years now

The city should be checking on the residents not giving them violations. There could be million reasons the lawns weren’t done. It’s sad the city was more concerned with the look of the street than the well-being of the citizens. Thank you for taking care.

What a wonderful act of kindness! I have an elderly friend who gets extremely upset when her yard isn’t looking good. Honestly, she worries so much she actually gets ill. She feels people will think she’s useless, incapable, or ready for a nursing home. The world has changed so much since I was a girl, very few people help anymore. THANK YOU

Honestly, the likelihood is is that she probably has some sort of symptom or personality trait that the neighbors deem unsavory. I needed a lot of help with my yard as a disabled person and had a bunch of people judging me for not always bringing my trash can in on time, but they didn't want to approach me bc they knew I'm mentally ill and saw me as "that crazy neighbor" 🙄 she may not be easy to deal with, but none of us are. If her house looks like that from the outside then she also needs help on the inside and possibly needs repairs done too. I wish that cities would have programs to help the elderly. Have a bunch of people sign up and get background checked to give service helping out the people who need it most. Instead of fining them ask if they need help and help them. A team of people could show up one day and clean and fix up the whole place.

Wow. I rem when we were little kids of the baby boom. The boys started to take on mowing the family yards at about 8 yrs old. Every week one of the boys just went across the street and mowed the elderly window's yard. She lived on the corner in a terrace house w flowers, bushes and trees, front, side, and back. Sometimes she would give them cookies or a nickel. Nobody ever asked for money. Nobody ever whined or moaned that it wasn't their turn, one finished w his yard and just went on to do the work for the lady who was alone.
I grew up thinking men were really great. I hope there are some little girls on that street watching these guys. And i hope the lady in that house does drop dead of a heart attack from the shock of someone helping her w/o being asked or paid.

I try to keep the alley behind my house cleaned up, even though the trash gets thrown around by the garbage truck, the neighbors, passerbys and others. When a storm comes through, the palm trees blow dead fronds all over the entire block across the street. So I go out and pick up the debris and stack it next to a palm so the landscape guys can get it on their next trip. The neighborhood belongs to all of us, and it doesn't hurt to do our part to tidy up as we can. Only takes a few minutes to keep a street looking nice. We have volunteers that work with the city to clean up the beaches, areas of trash and debris once or twice a year. Everyone brings stuff to use, and the city provides equipment also. It's a fun day for the volunteers, and a lot of trash is collected.

They travelled hundreds of miles from Pennsylvania to New Hampshire to see us when my son got cancer. And when he was in bed suffering in pain, they called us from Bird In Hand, and sang hymns into the phone so we could hear their beautiful voices singing about heaven, and we all cried. This is so inspirational! My husband and I have helped our neighbor when he had shoulder surgery and couldn’t move the snow. His wife was out with a shovel and my husband jumped in to help. I told him don’t you dare take any money!!! My parents had a neighbor that would snow blow and mow their grass. The couple had their two boys help out. My mom tried to pay them but they wouldn’t take it. My parents could well afford to pay, but the parents wanted their boys to learn that it’s the right thing to do to help without any compensation. When my mom died they came with their boys to the calling hours. It was so emotional for me to see such kindness towards my parents. There are great people out there willing to help. Great work

Not everyone has the ability or equipment to care for their lawns. It should be included just like trash and recycling pickup instead of spending city resources to hand out violations to people who are obviously unable to do it.

I always chose to plant and the most likely people to offer to help came from other countries. The most notable was this tiny 80-something Chinese woman who barely spoke English. I was digging up sod to start my garden and suddenly she was beside me loosening the clumps with my shovel. Most Americans hardly recognize that their neighbors exist these days.
