Idaho S 1445 meals for Children - the “Don’t take Federal Money” Senators lied

The Idaho Food Bank where I have Volunteered with the Rotary supports S 1445.
A few years ago, Rochelle and I volunteered at the annual Thanksgiving food distribution in Pocatello. It was estimated 3,000 cars passed thru the distribution lines that morning filling their cars with a turkey, bag of potatoes, bag of fruit, bread, and cans of food, donated.
The question I asked myself was “Why so many in Bannock County of 80,000 are hungry?” There may have been a few that were gaming the system.
When I was still working, I was invited to a Food Pantry in Brigham City, Utah by a client who managed the operation. She told me where to sit and watch. Every “Customer” was scheduled at a particular time, usually an hour.
A member of the family arrived. the Pantry was run like a grocery store. A shopping basket half the normal size and she would lead the person down each aisle asking, Do you need beans, potatoes, corn, and other donated food from grocery stores mainly.
The last item was a cake or pie and a “Hug”.
When that person arrived, I noticed that they were hunkered over, like the world was on their shoulders.
After that “Hug” they straightened up and had a Smile.
During the 2007 Financial Fraud that lasted 6 years. Many in the community were having trouble finding work, after paying for the rent, utilities, insurance, gas, the families pantry was bare. That year the people who visited the Pantry went from 10,000 to 15,000 visits.
Thrivent Financial recognized 5 outstanding volunteers that year, I submitted her name and she was one of the 5. She received $1,500 and used the money to pay for the expense of the Pantry.
Shortly after that, the Governor of Utah recognized her as one of the “Thousand Points of Light”.
She is a wonderful person. She taught me “ There for the Grace of God Go I”.
