- If Joe Biden steps aside for the Democratic presidential nomination - still a very big if - the favorite to replace him is Vice President Kamala Harris. In recently leaked post-debate polling from Open Labs (puck.news/biden-plunges-in-sw...) , Harris polled better than Biden in matchups against Trump.
In 2019, Dana Goodyear wrote in The New Yorker (www.newyorker.com/magazine/20...) , “As a Black, female law-and-order Democrat, Harris creates a kind of cognitive dissonance.” The profile Harris inhabited then would be welcome in an election year where disorder is on voters’ minds and the Republicans are nominating a convicted felon. But Harris hasn’t inhabited that political profile for years. And since becoming Biden’s vice president the conventional wisdom on her has shifted: She’s gone from rising star - many thought her “the next Obama” - to political underachiever.
So I’ve had a few questions about Harris. What accounted for the fast fall from grace after she took the vice presidency? What happened to the smart-on-crime prosecutor we once saw? What has the White House done - or not done - to build her profile? And are critics of Harris fair, or is she underrated now?
I’m joined by Elaina Plott Calabro, a staff writer at The Atlantic who traveled with Harris extensively for a major profile (www.theatlantic.com/magazine/...) last year. I left this conversation with a very different theory of who Harris is, what her politics are and what led to the confusions of her vice presidency.

This interview is illustrative of why Kamala is so disliked by the electorate. It’s obvious that she’s a husk, an empty shell that has nothing animating her besides ambition. She doesn’t stand for anything, her entire character is malleable, a true political weathervane. It’s worth noting that she was only considered a top-tier candidate by the media who were salivating at her identity. The second she started opening her mouth and voters got a good look at what she is, they rejected her outright. Republican voters didn’t even have an opportunity to weigh in, she was summarily dismissed by Democratic voters. It’ll be perfectly fitting if Biden bows out in the next month, with Kamala taking over, only to get demolished at the ballot box come November.

I’ve never liked her because she has a reputation for screwing her way up, and because she addresses people as though they are 8 years old while she herself sounds as though SHE is only 8 years old. But the most damning offense for me was an article about her in The Atlantic, in which Kamala describes the art she had purchased to “decorate” her new home. She doesn’t discuss the art itself, what it means to her, why she likes the various works. Instead, she talks about the ARTISTS, how they are minorities. I find that incredibly gross, to choose art solely based on the artists’ characteristics.
She is one-dimensional, like a cartoon character or paper doll. Useless.

When you cannot even manage a 'show' in your own presidential primary against a pack of even less talented candidates IN THE STATE WHERE YOU OCCUPY A SENATE SEAT, or speak in other than bad parodies of the more circular Dr. Seuss literary constructions, or do even a portion of the VP's assigned jobs while in office, you might actually be really, really overrated. Dan Quayle showed far more talent for the job than Kamala, and he was - up until Biden-Harris - in a neck-and-neck race with VP Biden for the worst veep ever. The only good news for Dems is that Kammie is only 12 points underwater on approval (recent 538 ref), versus Joe's -20%. The bad news for Dems is that - other than resignation and admission that they kept a dolt as second chair for the past four years - there is no way to rid themselves of this 'gift' courtesy of their brand of identity politics. Prediction: there will be a brief honeymoon period where the fluffers in the press do what they did to talk up Joe, but once out on the campaign trail, all will be revealed and Dems will again be crying over lost chances and bad decisions. Other than a Cher moment (i.e., turn back time to 2020 and avoid this incredible mess), or ANOTHER Cher moment (bite off on Kennedy before he was unceremoniously ejected from the party), the bed has been made and given the Amber Heard/Joe Biden treatment.

@@sleo6664 Absolutely... against an even more horrible candidate, Loretta Sanchez, under Kalifornia's option-eliminating, uni-party top-two primary system. When faced with an awful choice and a horrible choice, that's essentially what happens.
What really happened in the 2020 Dem primary was a combination of a strong, already crowded extreme-left presence with Sanders and Warren, Buttigieg running toward the 2008 Obama middle and crowding that segment of the spectrum, and Biden running his basement campaign as 'old very white guy who will absolutely, positively do as Jill says and front for an Obama third term' - there was just no space for Harris to run any of the established Dem election scripts, and - while she may have been a sitting senator from Kalifornia - she was further not a likable or sympathetic candidate in her home state.
Finally, as has been reported and we have seen demonstrated time and again, Harris was overrated. As Joel Wertheimer, who served as associate staff secretary to Obama, wrote, “The story of Kamala Harris is one sports fans are familiar with: The scouts just got it wrong. That’s really it.”
Buttigieg has the same problem, with an inability to understand optics, political capital, and just how much the average American dislike khaki pants and inappropriate shoe choices. I'd love to explain this as some sort of dislike of gay politicians by the Democratic electorate, but Mayor Pete's defining characteristic is identical to Mike Pence and a host of others capable of winning down-ballot races in carefully curated electorates - a decided inability to stand out from the decor in an empty, beige-painted room.
Back to Harris...the real challenge in 2025 for Kammie will be explaining what she knew and when she knew it in front of House and Senate investigators... but I suspect that with DIE and the Dem's brand of hyper-identity politics, she MUST be the party's nominee if they are to bow to reality and 25th A poor Joe off the ticket. Trump will have to rebrand himself as 48 and his platform as Agenda 48, but the Dems will take the win with first female appointed POTUS and eat their feelings with an L for 2024, but may possibly salvage some of the down-ticket races they will lose if they had stuck with President Doctor Jill.
What a bloody mess. We need a Cher moment or two... turn back time to 2020 and go with anyone other than Joe, or at least a cabinet with balls and honesty which would have removed him in 2023 in sufficient time to get someone - anyone - in the race to have a shot at 2024 and a chance to hold at least one chamber.

Edit: I originally said in this comment that no, she is not underrated. Now that I actually listened to the podcast, I see her in a different light. I'm not sure if she can beat Trump, but I do like her more now. Hopefully if she is the candidate, she will be more herself. Genuineness is what she has been missing, and I now understand why. Being the opponent of a man treated for Parkinsons, which medications they use cause delusions and paranoia. I'm a nurse, it raises dopamine, the CNS agent responsible for schizophrenia, bipolar etc. We call dopamine agonists side affects "parkinsonian" and on the psych ward I worked in for decades, I cared for enumerable older folks put on these meds that made them into psych patients. We do lower the doses and it reverses the effects, however, we are never able to lower them enough once past a certain phase of the disease so patients balance their need to use skeletal muscle with the toxic effects of the drug on their thinking. Parkinsons' is the only disease that causes mental illness with treatment.

For those harping on her work on Immigration, and particularly the Southern Border...put a pin in it. She was given that because she is from a border state - California. And that is pretty much it. Do not, for one moment forget that the Republicans REJECTED GW Bush's comprehensive Immigration reform proposal. That was truly a clarion call that is still underestimated. It was only at the rejection of the brokered Immigration reform proposal by a bipartisan group by - former Pres Trump - that the depth of the rot should have been obvious. It will take a Dem president, and veto-proof control of the Senate and the House to get big and substantive legislation. There was no way she could succeed on that assignment.
Interesting here that both reporters speak of hearing from Biden people a distinct uneasiness in giving Kamala assignments or assistance/mentorship for fear her skills and abilities might actually increase and give the impression that she actually could replace Biden if need be. These are probably the same people on Biden's team gaslighting the press and public ever since that disastrous debate.
