    • Genital Warts - Causes...
Warts are benign proliferations of skin and mucosa caused by the human papillomavirus.
There are several different types of warts, including genital warts, common warts, Filiform warts, Deep palmoplantar warts, Flat warts, Butcher's warts, Focal epithelial hyperplasia, and Cystic warts.
In this video, I will discuss non-genital types of warts in detail.
If you are looking for information regarding genital warts, please watch my previous video on the topic, and the link is in the description below.
The human papilloma virus is a double stranded DNA virus, which has a particular tendency to affect the skin.
It is spread by direct or indirect contact with an affected individual.
More than 100 types of the virus have been identified.
Males and females are equally affected, and they can occur at any age.
Most warts tend to disappear spontaneously within 2 years of onset.
If they resolve spontaneously, they do not leave a scar on the skin.
However, warts removed by various treatment methods, may leave scars on the skin.
Common warts, also called verruca vulgaris, are mainly caused by HPV types 2 and 4.
They appear as hyperkeratotic papules with a rough, irregular surface.
They range from smaller than 1 mm to larger than 1 cm in size.
Although they may occur at any site, most are seen on the hands and knees.
Filiform warts are long slender growths, usually seen on the face around the lips, eyelids, or nares.
Deep palmoplantar warts are mainly caused by HPV type 1.
They are usually found on weight-bearing plantar areas such as the heel and metatarsal heads.
Since they grow deep, they cause more pain than common warts.
Flat warts are caused by HPV types 3, 10, and 28.
They are flesh colored papules slightly elevated above the skin surface.
They range from 1 to 5 mm in size and can be numerous in number.
These warts may occur anywhere; however, the face, hands, and shins tend to be the most common areas.
Butcher's warts are caused by HPV type 7. They are seen in people who frequently handle raw meat.
Their appearance is the same as common warts, with a higher prevalence of cauliflowerlike lesions.
They are commonly seen on the hands.
Focal epithelial hyperplasia, also known as Heck disease, is caused by HPV types 13 and 32.
It is an HPV infection occurring in the oral cavity.
They are typically seen among children of American Indian or Inuit descent.
Cystic warts are caused by HPV type 60. They appear as nodules on the weight-bearing surface of the sole.
If a lesion is incised, cheesy material may be expressed.
Treatment is not necessary for all the lesions except extensive ones because most lesions tend to recover on their own.
If treatment is required, the topical agent salicylic acid is the first-line option.
It is available over the counter and can be applied by the patient at home.
Intralesional injections are recommended for warts that are refractory to topical therapy.
Systemic agents that have been used to treat warts include cimetidine, retinoids, and intravenous cidofovir.
Surgical care includes cryosurgery with liquid nitrogen, laser treatment, and electrodessication.

    Let’s say you have HPV.
Do you recommend getting Gardasil-9 Vaccine?
Does getting 1-shot or 2-shot enough? Or must complete 3 doses of Gardasil-9 HPV Vaccine.
