The post card is addressed to Miss Hume,Harbanswala (Hurbanswala), Dehra Dun, United Providences. This appears to be either the daughter or perhaps grand daughter of Allan Octavian Hume. Hume was a British member of the Imperial Civil Service (later the Indian Civil Service), a political reformer, ornithologist and botanist who worked in British India as a Colonial administrator in Oudh, Dehra Dun, Meerut and Etawah. He was the founder of the Indian National Congress. Hume’s daughter, Maria was married to Ross Scott who was a Judicial Commissioner in Oudh. Oudh was part of the United Provinces (United Provinces of Agra and Oudh) from 1904 and Scott died in 1908.
It’s no secret that DigiP loves investigating postcards! Excellent work sir, pinning for others to see. Thanks James 🙏
Wonderful investigation…love this history.
@@ExploringStamps You know I love an investigation challenge. :P
This is nothing unexpected from a Philatelist.
Many prefer investigating PostCards, Cancellations and even the Letters inside.
Find out the History and reveals the Story !!
Kudos to The Digital Philatelist ! 🙏🙏
Super cool! Good 'sleuthing.'
Another extremely well done and well researched video. Siam (Thailand) lies at the north end of the Malaysian peninsula and before Siam had its own international postal service, the British Consular Post Office used Straits Settlement stamps overprinted with a "B" for Bangkok from 1882-1885 to provide international postal service to satisfy demand from expatriate merchants and missionaries. In July of 1885, Siam joined then Universal Postal Union and began providing international mail service. The British Consular Post Office actually operated from 1858 until 1885 under a treaty with the Kingdom of Siam, but the highly collectible Bangkok "B" overprint stamps only appeared from 1882-1885.
This is a marvellous example of the use of philately in encouraging the study of both history and geography...nice one!
😊. Thank you. The Straits Settlements has all attributes of a great lesson in Geography and History, and the stamps have captured it perfectly. Thanks for watching 😊
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! 😊
Every time I watch one of these programs you make me want to start collecting a new country. I might have to start sending you a bill.
😬 Uh oh.... I'm going to have to change my billing address 😅. Glad you are enjoying the videos, thanks for watching!!
Great film. You really go to town with the information. Love your films. Keep up the fantastic work
New video from you is like a joy in quarantine
😊😊😊. Glad you are enjoying the episodes, thanks for watching!
I have quite a number of Strait Settlements stamps but never understood their history til now. Bravo, Graham!
Thanks for another interesting and informative video. Always enjoyed!
Ok Graham your editing skills never cease to amaze me! What you did on the panoramic stamp was so cool!! I love this episode and exploring with you!
Wow. A feature of my country on Exploring Stamps! Thanks for sharing about the Straits Settlements and Singapore history and philately. The multiple post marks on the postcard from Singapore is impressive! :)
🇸🇬 🙌
Another greatly informative video. I love the Lion as the name of the city as something mythical.
I'm loving the focus on unusual region or colonial territory stamps.
Me as well, I love learning about places that I have little to no knowledge about.
Thank you for portraying my country. If memory serves right, you were spot on about the history. Much appreciated. 👍🏼
Glad you enjoyed it, I really enjoyed learning about Singapore 🇸🇬
Another great episode. The history that comes from stamps/postmarks/overprints etc is what many philatelists enjoy.
Thank you Iain! There is just so much to learn in this hobby, its keeping me busy 😊. Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching.
Excellent presentation! I am always happy to see your videos pop into my list! Thanks!
Thank you David, its great to see that you are enjoying the videos. More to come 😊
Thank you for another fab video!
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching Karen 😊
I'm from Penang, one of the Straits Settlements, and was thinking of suggesting you to make a topic regarding the Straits Settlements and this came out! Really enjoyed watching it, keep it up!
😊Perfect!!! Thank you for watching, yes this is a great topic to discuss, and I kinda want to keep collecting Straits stamps now. Glad you enjoyed the video.
A very comprehensive feature on our ASEAN neighbor, Singapore. Nice work Graham :)
Thank you Mark 😊. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Wow, finally Singapore, a nice and excellent journey in history
I loved learning about it, thank you for watching 🇸🇬
The video about the Dead countries is 1 of my favorites . Thank you sir Graham for these videos and teaching us histories.
Once ive introduced my friends to your channel they never stopped talking about your videos. And I think we gonna have another great theme this week. Thanks 🙏🏻
always enjoy your videos - thank you
Thank you Caroline 😊
What a magnificent presentation. History, social description and what beautiful images inlaid with the stamp at the end! Breathtaking work! Congratulation
😊 Many thanks!! Glad that you enjoyed the video and the images of Singapore, thanks for watching!
Great video!
Thank you!!
One thing to note. If you translate the Tamil words 'singam' (stands for lion) and 'oor' (stands for city) the combination works out to be Singapore. It is perfectly a Tamil word. Many people who spoke Tamil immigrated to Singapore during the British era or earlier. My theory is Singapore may have been a Tamil Name as called by the first settlers.
Excellent vid! Certainly one of my favorites. Though familiar with all the locations of Straits Sets (but for Dingdings), it put them all in my head geographically. I had no idea that Cocos and Christmas was part of Straits Sets. Thanks from one very heavy collector of flora and fauna, which all of the former Straits countries astound with their beauty.
Thank you Kevan!! Yeah apparently the Cocos became a part of Singapore for a while before being sold to Australia.... Really interesting! Thank you so much for watching 😊
Thanks for another great weaving of philately, history, personal narrative from a postcard, and sites - bringing these paper touchstones to life. Living here in Africa I have done a great deal of business with the government and companies in Singapore entering the African markets - and have a great Singapore collection. Thanks for your efforts as always!
Thank you 😊. Great to see that you have a collection of Singapore stamps, it really is a fascinating area to explore through philately. Thanks so much for watching!!
Nice! The Singapore Stamp in the beginning of the film is from the year of my birth.
I'm collecting British Colony Stamps and so also Singapore & Straits Settlements Stamps.
So another great episode for me 😊
As always, great video with history text book information. In 1984,a set of 6 stamps using similar design as in 1959 were issued to commemorate 25 years of Nation Building .🇸🇬🇸🇬🇸🇬
Thank you 😊. Yes I only have one of those 1984 stamps, a pretty cool set to collect and have. Thanks for watching 🇸🇬
Singapore is definitely known for its wide cultural and its very awesome philatelic topics that it issued over the years. I still cant get over my head how did you catch the panoramic view of the country, that's amazing stuff, Graham! Even after we seperated because of racial problems and politics, we are still very close brothers regardless of the past. I live right next to the border of SIngapore in the city of Johor Bahru, so I expect you to make an episode covering about Johor stamps in the next video 😂😂 MY CZcams channel is still in progress, you might expect for it to be released at the end of October, I'll make sure to deliver high quality content because this script is gonna end up in a friggin long video haha. Cheers :)
🇲🇾🇸🇬🙏. Glad you enjoyed, I loved learning about the area’s history and there is so much more to look up. Thanks for watching 😊
Another great video! I always enjoy watching. Production quality is top notch and the stories are always fascinating!
Much appreciated! 😊. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Brilliant moment at the end of this video zooming in to the real life harbour. A cinematic trick that made me laugh with wonder.
😊 glad you enjoyed it! 🏙
Seamless editing, great subject! Had all my attention. Thanks again!
Having been to Singapore in 2002, I was fascinated with the food. I have the King George stamps that show Singapore at the bottom. I also have the sailing vessels and a few modern. What else is fun to collect are FDC of their independence, first flight of the Concorde and old envelopes with stamps mentioned above. The stamps are housed in Lighthouse stock books, tall and pocket-sized. Hunting on ebay for stamps with postmarks that have a nice "bullseye" are good eye-appeal.
Excellent Graham!
Thank you David 😊🙏
Stamps and history traveling throughout the world making connections with people and events. Amazing. Thanks a lot!
Again a super episod ! Thanks so much for all the time you take to prepare and share, just great ! Regards
Marvellous episode Graham ! an historical well sewed and set about the place...plus a must 🍰 this astonishing postcard "route" from 1906..as says DigitalPhilatelist...a best of..👍
😊 Thank you Fred! Glad you enjoyed the postcard route ✉️
Great content about one of the most vital cities in South East Asia and it´s philatelic history, thanks for sharing !
You are very welcome, glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching 😊
Great episode! I have some Singapore stamps from the 1950’s so I was especially interested in this topic. There is a lot of history to cover and you provided a great synopsis.
Wow! What a superb Vid! Several of my children have visited and worked in Singapore-sharing Vid with them to enlighten them as to the Philatelic History of Singapore as you so aptly ‘covered the waterfront’ of this amazing place!
Thank you Randy!! Glad you enjoyed the video. The Straits Settlements were such a fun region to explore and learn about. Many thanks for your support!
Thank you for featuring my second home...Singapore ❤
😊🇸🇬👍
An excellent video. So much information, and very entertaining. I will watch it at least 2 more times

One of your best video. 👍
Wow, thank you! 😊
These are the best episodes.
Glad you enjoyed it Peter! 😊
@@ExploringStamps May I add that I collect a very limited number of areas for many years and these videos in particular broaden my perspective. Many years ago I toyed with the idea of collecting this area but I decided to limit myself to the British Caribbean (including British Guiana/Guyana and British Honduras/Belize, the last being my primary specialization).
@@219belizeman Collecting British Caribbean must be a fascinating area within philately. I think it was a great choice to focus on 😃
I really liked it that you had Indian stamps canceled in Singapore. Having stamps from one place canceled in another would be a great topic for a video. I have Australian stamps canceled in Japan, British stamps canceled in France, Hong Kong stamps canceled in Japan, and Indian stamps canceled in Iran, among others.
🤔. Thats an interesting idea! I didn't realize there were so many instances of stamps being cancelled in other countries. 🤔🤔
@@ExploringStamps Great Britain used abroad is a popular collecting area.
Great information I am always learning from stamps about the country's and the 🌏 👍🇦🇺😎
What a thoroughly interesting and informative video based on postage stamps! Thank you.

Glad you enjoyed it Miguel, the video was a lot of fun to research. Thanks for watching!! 😊
Great Episode! Love seeing notifications of new content from you - hoping you'll be bringing a new Exploring episode home with you from Stampex... 😉
Thank you Angie, it will depend on how distracted I will get with all the dealer booths and stamps to buy. 😊. Thanks for watching!
Beautifully, done. I am amazed at your presentation and how you explain history behind the stamp. Thank you.
Thank you 😊. Glad you enjoy the format and content! Thanks for watching.
Just fabulous, once again. Keep up the great work.
Thank you! Will do! 😊

I am dying to know how you managed to improve the cancels. I have tried for decades.

😊. Thank you Ricardo! Yes I WISH I was able to go to Singapore for the episode, good thing I can still enjoy the country through its stamps. Thanks for watching!
What a great video (once again). I've been working through my Malayan area stamps over the past week or so, so this was serendipity in action. 😀 Such an absorbing area, and so much to be learnt.
Whoa perfect timing Gareth! 😊. I agree, it is such n absorbing area. Thanks for watching!

I learn alot from your videos .. .. a couple rabbit holes I went down recently are thurn und taxis stamps and American Letter Mail Company stamps ,.. Thanks for making videos
american letter mail company...? never heard of it. do you have a link?
@@STScott-qo4pw You can google it to get the Wikipedia link ..
Very interesting area and I think you can do additional 10 vids for Singapore and Straits Settlements. I didn´t know that the name is Lion city, that´s a really nice name for such a town. I will look through my Indian stamps if one has a cancellation of one of the three cities you metionend. But a question: Do you really own such a nice 4 Anna stamp from India? I have one, but far away from the condition in you video and it is cancelled.
I just got a box with several Asian modern stamps from China, Hongkong, Macao & Japan. Also I got some newer from Singapore and they are really attractive. You don´t find many newer ones in Europe and if so, the dealers offer them only for high prices. But old stamps from Straits Settlements are so popular now, that they are far more expensive than 10 years before. I think the people in Singapor, same as the Chinese people started collecting stamps from their home country. You showed several nice ones and they are also attractive. Very nice video.
Thank you Oliver. That is really interesting insight, I think you are correct with the Straits Settlements stamps being so popular now that their prices have gone up. After researching and learning about the Straits Stamps, I have really gotten to admire and enjoy them, they are fantastic. I do not own the 4 Anna stamp unfortunately (I WISH). Its just an image that I included in the video. I hope to get one at some point.
Thanks so much for watching, glad you enjoyed the video.
Post card- Pronunciation of quay is 'ki' or 'kee' 10:30; the world first largest postal stamp was King Edward VII $500, you can send an elephant from S'pore to London ,lol happy hunting ! oh yes, don't forget look into British Post Office in Siam ( Bangkok). Amazing postal history stamps passing thro' Singapore 1882 to 1885 by using 'B' and before and after without 'B' ! Watch out forgery and counterfeit !
Awesome :-)
Thank you 😊
cool info :)

Спасибо за обзор. Лайк 👍 👍 👍
Hey Graham, can you please make a video about stamps from the UAE, Trucial States and the individual issues. This part of Philately is very very confusing for a beginner.
Another fascinating place to explore, I would love to!! 😊. Thanks for the suggestion.
Singapore beautiful stamps. 👍👍 from: stamps and numismatic channel 🇮🇩 Ind.
Which colony stamps are more expensive french or british? Many thanks!
😊👏👍
I just discovered this video. Thanks for the good information.
i came across the stamps of the Straits Settlement about 20 years ago, when my cousin send me a small collection of stamps with an envelope full of straits. It contains over 100 stamps of the shown (3c) Edward VII stamps in green colour, (among other stamps)
to my surprise I found about 6 or 7 different green colors starting with light green up to an intense dark green.
The catalogue don't give any information of these different colors. Do you have any informations about these various colors?
How did you acquire the box of stamps?
Bom dia gostaria de trocar stamps por stamps brasileiro
