This series has me again asking myself the question of whether it's more enriching for ones soul to see 1000 different places or to see one place, in a thousand different lights and a thousand different moods on a thousand different days and a thousand different nights.

Just came across this. I have been watching you redo this place every week since pretty much day one. But of course one forgets what it was like when you first bought it. Holy moly. Fun to watch and I am blown away by the beautiful home you have built. Unbelievable. And funny to see you bring a fireplace structure which you will never use in the future. So much progress in 2 years. We see you for maybe 1 hour per week or 100 hours over the two years. Out of over 17,000 hours in two years.. So we don't see all the effort you have put into the project. Holy moly

I follow you on that one. I strongly believe that watching so many movies and series have negatively altered our way to approach life. Nobody goes to pee or poo in almost any movie, doors aren't locked, nobody farts... Very freudian description but not on purpose ^^ it's just what easily comes to mind. But I guess you can see the point.
I am Italian from Milan, and I am based in Australia. Watching this video makes me think what an heritage and how many beautiful spots we have in Italy and Italians ignore or are not even aware of their existence. I am grateful to people like him, valuing our land. Thank you

When I grew up I used to visit my grandfather in Italy, he would have used those 2 homes to keep his sheep, as he rotated them eating grass all over the hills. Keep them there at night, then return in the morning. We sold milk and cheeses. I miss it. Beautiful spot you have.

I have seen all of the videos that have been uploaded. It’s now very interesting to come back and watch this first video. The progress that has been made is hard to comprehend. A great deal of hard work has been done and so much has changed.
Re-watching the first episode at the homestead. Martijn just rebuilt the campsite and outdoor kitchen after the terrible storm.

Savagely painful to watch because I always wanted to do this after a life of building, with a love of stone. The roof! Those slabs of rock, the precision stonework. Genius and passion frozen in time. You are a lucky man indeed.

The fact that building nowadays is an impossible thing to do if you don’t have the money. It doesn’t even matter where you live anymore, it’s that expensive. It’s just sad. So many of us probably would love to have their own home to live in

The stone roof is amazing. First thing I noticed. I work with stone and my eye was immediately drawn to them. Those stone buildings are gems.
This video has brought me so much peace. I sometimes feel alone in desiring to be free from the superficiality and materialism that is advertised by modern “Western” culture. There is something that seems so purposeful about this journey and it inspires me. I am grateful for the time and effort you have put in to share your experience with us.
The peace and desire for freedom is very relatable, but realistically speaking without that modern "Western" culture there would not be a video platform as such that you could enjoy peace from in the comfort of your home.

Sadly also Italy has been devastated, far more than UK I'm afraid. Some nice spots still survive tho and I hope that nowdays people is more environmental friendly

Martijn, my ancestors were Waldensians, and lived in Prarostino (Borgata Cardoni). I also have a couple of ancestors from Rora. I went to visit in 2018, and their abandoned village looked exactly like your property--dry stacked stone cottages and barns with slate roofs. So glad I found your channel--I will subscribe, and see you in Italy the next time I visit!

@@d8889 Absolutely! I have tried for years to claim Italian citizenship by ancestry, but unfortunately I am too many generations removed. Would love to be able to freely live and work there, and then pass it on to my children. I will be back.
Great to watch! A few tips considering the stove: position it at the highest point in the roof. The draft will be better and you will gain more heat from the longer indoor stretch of pipe. Also you will get less smoke into your house from outside. Replace the bend in the pipe by two 135 degree angles, this will also improve the draft.
That sounds like really good advice. This guy must have the heart of a lion and the balls of a bull!

I just found this and watched this episode together with my wife. I can do understand why the location with the view appeals to you Martijn. While I watched this my comments must have altered between ‘this place is amazing’ and ‘goodness me, what is getting himself in to’. But you’re doing it. Plus the advantage of far less expense. The biggest drawback that I can see so far is not having a road right up to the house. But maybe in future this could be feasible. Auguri di buone feste.🎄🎄🎄
@@angelaberni8873 There are advantages and disadvantages to both ways of life. As you pointed out in your comment.
A major issue with living in the the mountains in Italy is a) that you are entirely dependent on having a car, and b) you can have a long drive down steep windy roads to get anywhere else, which can be a problem for example in snow and ice, though no doubt that is part of the attraction.
When I bought in Italy the place was surrounded by hundreds of sq km of hills/mountains, but I could walk to the shops in 10 mins. And I have lived in a rustico, an hour's walk from the town, and without a car, which in winter was not easy.
Anyone who decides to live in a remote place in Italy, or anywhere else, has to think carefully about what they are doing, though it looks on the face of it that this guy has done so, either that or he has had previous experience. Whichever, I wish him luck.
@@jonathannewby5795 What a peculiar comment. You decide to live up a mountain, but please be warned you'll need a car!... Are mountain locations in UK/US/Canada et al served with underground/subway stns next to your house? In Italy/Europe it might be hours to get to the nearest shop right? In the US/Canada it might take a day(s) before you actually reach what some might call civilisation. "Steep drives down winding roads", who would have thought when you live up a mountain! Snow and ice , bloody hell(!), I thought Italy was always sunny! You must certainly be some clueless UK townie on a mid life crisis...
@@luiginiolu6842 You miss the fact that I was replying to a comment about the drawbacks of living in the city, that there are pros and cons to both, one of which is that you don't need a car in a city.
I live in the hills in Italy ( and I know all about the rural life), but not halfway up a mountain, been there done that, the difference being that I prefer not to have to drive 40 hairpin bends (closed in winter snow, at least where I live, where you get a metre) to visit a cafe, etc. Great if you like the challenge. Canada/US, both of which I know, in particular the Northern Sierra, cannot in any way be compared with Italy.
I've seen several people buy and sell up near me. Why? I know an agent who has 300 properties in the hills on his books, and has difficulty selling anything that is remote, needs restoration, lacks mod cons, or does not have a pool. Does that tell you anything? I wonder why these properties are cheap? Is it because people are stupid? In case you didn"t know, rural properties, with land, are two a penny in Italy, I've got two for sale myself, one unchanged in 300 years, stupendous views, built in stone, (including the roof), in the back of beyond. Wanna buy it ? On second thoughts, not to you, I'd rather sell to someone who is courteous. I'm fully aware of the charms (and problems) of country living in Italy, which is why I bought the properties in the first place.

I would strongly advise the purchase of wood cooking stove (cucina economica); it will heat very efficiently and economically as well as providing a large cooking surface and oven. Some models have a hot water container as well. They are very popular for mountain houses (like mine). Beautiful place and beautiful structures, by-the-way. Good luck with the renovation and enjoy.
I live in the mountains of Colorado at an elevation of 8200 feet and I use a wood cook stove all the time to heat my homestead and cook on.
Yeah, and check beforehand how many KwH the stove is said to have, because they do not all have the same heating capacity ;)
I am always amazed at the craftsmanship in dry stone construction. So sturdy and lasts forever. Looking forward to seeing you make it into a cozy home. GREAT PROJECT!

I'm doing a renovation on a chapel myself and I know just how much work goes into it. I take my hat off to this chap. The frustrations are huge, but so are the rewards, when things come right.
I encourage you to learn everything you can about the art of drystone walling. As a waller, there is a massive amount of skill and knowledge that goes into building a structure like that. The buildings are in incredible condition.

I've spent my childhood's summers in Val Po, not so far from Val Pellice, like on the other side of those mountains. My grandma has a house like one of yours there. I'm missing those places, quietness and air quality, plus all of that wild nature. I think you did a great choice. Wish you the best from Amsterdam.

You likely thought of this but if not, when you dig and add the new line I’d add a gauge at the shared feed end so you can tell if you have a future leak from that point to your buildings.
Good luck! I have a property in Tuscany, but much more established. Can I suggest that you start with infrastructure and get an even, flat path layed down to move your items to the house. That will make everything so much easier as you move materials and supplies. Don't underestimate how much easier this will make it! Also, less risk of twisting an ankle or knee and stopping you working all together!

I’ve really enjoyed this. I’m enjoying these kind of restorations over the ones where everything old is ripped out and replaced with all expensive and new materials. With this project, you really have to think everything through and be quite resourceful. I’m sure you’ve been told a hundred times, but I’ll say it too, be careful and don’t get injured. I started watching from video 80. This weeks video, watching Martijn really enjoy the fire was great. So I decided to come back to video 1 to see how it all began. My god!
